They should have just built two server, but Riot loves their money, and most pro teams will most likely just move to be closer to the servers.

If you build two servers you end up having to divide NA in NAW and NAE, and I guess that's not something Rito wants to do.

That would most likely kill NAE because all the competitive players will play on NAW (where Riot hosts LCS).

Based on what little I actually studied on servers, I'm pretty sure they could join and synchronize the two machines. Might be harder to maintain though, dividing the country is definitely the easier option.

So far, I'm competent with: Riven, Sona, Ahri

I'm still learning: Akali, Katarina, Irelia, Sejuani, Vi, Ashe, and Vayne

you can have one account on 2 servers. World Of Tanks does this for NA. You get matched normally with people from your server but if you want you can go play on the other one, you just have higher ping. And if you play in platoons it is dictated by where the leader is/wants to be.

First of all, I haven't studied servers.

NB: We have to keep in mind that this is a highly competitive game.

I'm not sure what you mean with synchronizing the servers. Do you mean synchronizing the "static" data like accounts, masteries, champions owned etc.? Yes, that wouldn't be a problem. What is a problem, though, is the matchmaking. Let's call the two servers A and B. If the game is still hosted on one server, say B, then people closer to server A would have a clear disadvantage playing on server B.

In other words, the matchmaking should keep into account that players closer to one of the servers should only be matched with people closer to the same server, so that the game can be hosted on the closest server for everybody. This would effectively divide the player base of the two servers over the two servers. In a highly competitive game like this I think that's unacceptable. We can't have one ranked ladder for two completely separated player bases, it simply wouldn't be fair. How can someone call oneself the highest rated Challenger tier player when you've faced only one half of the players in the tier? The best players of both bases will never clash for the number one.

If you meant that a game will be hosted at both servers at the same time, some players communicating with server A and some communicating with server B, and then server A and B synchronize to determine the game state and then push that back to their connected players, there are some things to be said about that too. This will increase the overall ping for every player, as the servers have to synchronize constantly. All the information needs to be available for one process to determine the game state. This process will have to be at either A or B, so one will be the "master" and the other the "slave". If A is the master, then input from players connected to B will take longer to reach A than input from players connected to A, on average. So there will have to be some magic done there with some educated guesses to get it a bit more accurate. Then, before the game state gets pushed out, both servers need to have the first state ready (master -> slave) and then they need to synchronize again to hopefully push the data to their players at the exact same time, which will also just be an approximation.

In other words, very complex, much development, arguable gain, but most of all: not enough determinism for a game as competitive as League of Legends.

EDIT: Also, have we talked about the fact that both servers should be connected with one insanely reliable and fast connection too?
