Hey all, sorry if this isn't the place to post this, but I've got some noob LoL questions I have gathered after playing for a while. Iā€™m level 20, main champ is Morgana, usually Sup, but can hold my own using her Mid/Top/Bot. Learning to play Shaco AP Top, going to try to use AD though, and learning to play Alistar as a tank. Looking to learn Warwick for Jungle, then Shaco Jungle after.

How am I supposed to lane as a melee champ against a ranged champ? The melee characters I have played as are Garen, Katarina and Kayle. Iā€™m starting to use Alistar but donā€™t have enough games with him to include him. Kayleā€™s E gives me range for a moment but itā€™s simply not enough. 9/10 times they just auto-attack me if I try to either attack them or minions, so I always end up hanging back behind my minions simply getting the xp. Basically Iā€™m useless, but I donā€™t know what to do.

Is a support not supposed to attack minions? I was in a game where my lane partner got mad at me and called me a troll for attacking minions. He said it was screwing up his lane control, and I was supposed to purely poke, ward and heal/buff them. I was saying how ridiculous that statement was but then a teammate said I was wrong as well, so now Iā€™m confused. I asked if he was going to buy my items for me then he told me to make gold from items and wards, which I donā€™t understand at all. Iā€™ve looked into gold items, for example with Morgana Iā€™ll try getting Frost Queenā€™s Claim, starting the game with Spellthiefā€™s Edge. But the gold is 2 every 10 seconds, isnā€™t that quite low?

What role should a tank pick? My goal is to be the guy mid/end game who just canā€™t be killed. Iā€™m trying to learn to tank with Alistar, and got scolded for going Bot. I know I can go Sup, but could I go Top, Mid or Jungle with a tank?

Can someone explain the proper way to jungle? I will be using mainly Warwick to practice, Shaco later on, and maybe Alistar if he is appropriate for it. As far as I know Iā€™m supposed to kill Jungle creeps, help gank, and cover a lane while itā€™s undefended (recalling or respawning). I donā€™t get red/blue buffs, how to kill creeps at starting levels (I lose the fights and die/run away). Is there a set path every time takes, or does everyone have their own? Also, can an AP Morgana Jungle?

Why is smurfing done so much, and is it ā€œlegalā€? Whenever someone admits to smurfing I report them, but maybe itā€™s not report-worthy? I HATE that these ****s are ruining beginner games. Yeah ā€œWell playing with better people makes you betterā€ is true, but getting cussed out for not knowing exactly where to be/go, or not knowing all 100 champions spells at my level or lower is ridiculous. I donā€™t know how the matchmaking system works, but I donā€™t get why level 30ā€™s are matched up with me, and why the hell pro players make new accounts to tear apart noobs.

How do wards work? I know you get the ones that you press ā€œ5ā€ to place, and you can buy vision wards (I think theyā€™re called pink wards?). The thing is I donā€™t get what the symbols are after they burn out. There will be these tiny red or blue dots where a ward was before, what does that mean? With regards to eSports LoL Worlds, how do they have soooo many wards cast? I know itā€™s 5 people throwing down wards compared to just me, but it seems like they have their entire side of the map warded.

What the hell do you have to do to get a "S" rank? I've gotten it twice for Morg, before I hit level 5 with her, but I've had better games with her and gotten A/B ranks. There hasn't been anything more frusterating for me than going something like 7/0/15 and getting an A-.

For the eSports play/LoL Worlds

What role do the coaches play? Are they like sports coaches, calling the shots/plays for the players to follow, scolding their players when they make bad plays? If not, who is in charge of the action in-game? Who decides who makes the main-five roster?

Why are the players so young? Why are there so few people in their mid-twenties or older?

How do I watch LoL when the World's are over. Specifically NA teams. I'm currently cheering for Cloud 9, because they're the only team with a Canadian on it :)

Winning vs a ranged champion is all about minimizing your losses while you wait for a power spike. If you choose the right moment to attack, you can win a fight, but if you choose wrong you'll take a ton of damage. Try and get last-hits when your opponent is busy last-hitting other minions, especially melee minions since those are safer to take (since they're closer to you). If a ranged champion autoattacks you, they'll draw aggro from the minion wave, so they can't always attack you for free.

Honestly it's a tough skill to learn so you'll have to practice and note how enemy melees win against you when you play ranged. Watching skilled players is also a good way to learn about laning phase.

In short, no, you don't farm the minions. There are some situations where you should attack minions as a support (to push the wave), but you don't take the gold unless you have a Relic Shield proc available. Supports are designed to function well with very little gold. Your job is to harass opponents, protect your carry, ward against ganks and don't die in lane. After that it's a bit more complicated, but basically focus on vision control and help your team however you can (by starting fights or defending your allies).

Also always buy a Sightstone early! You can put more wards down than a normal trinket and it gives you room to switch to Sweeping Lens to clear out enemy wards.

What role should a tank pick? My goal is to be the guy mid/end game who just canā€™t be killed. Iā€™m trying to learn to tank with Alistar, and got scolded for going Bot. I know I can go Sup, but could I go Top, Mid or Jungle with a tank?

Depends on the champion. Alistar is a support. Other tanks like Zac and Amumu are junglers. Some tanks like Nautilus can go top, jungle or even support. You have to know what the preferred role is for each champion since tanks can fit into any of those three roles.

Jungling is really complicated and a lot of people don't really know what they're doing unless they've put in the time to learn the role. I suggest searching for jungle guides aimed at beginners, or guides for the specific champion you'll be playing (like Warwick). They'll sometimes have tips on jungle route.

Also note that at level 20 you won't have a full rune page. The first jungle clear is more difficult without runes, but you should be okay with Warwick. Always start with Hunter's Machete or Hunter's Talisman; it's essential for the experience gain. Refillable Potion is usually the best pairing with one of those.

Smurfing is allowed, though sometimes it sucks for new players. Not much you can do about it. Some people smurf to play with friends, others do it to stomp easy games instead of actually trying at their own skill level. Just play your best and mute the people that are ****s to you. A lot of people in this game will insult you or give you passive-aggressive "advice." If it's bothering you at all, just mute them. Listen and learn from people you trust.

When wards expire, they leave behind visible "debris" that lingers for a while. Red circles indicate locations where enemy wards have expired. The brighter the color, the more recent the expiration of the ward. Blue circles are the same thing but for your own team. Anyone can see ward debris, but if it's in a bush you have to have vision of the bush to see it.

You can have up to three normal (yellow, stealthed) wards on the map at one time. The rest of the vision has to be supplemented by your team. In pro games, everyone on the team is really diligent about using trinkets, Sightstones and Tracker's Knife to put wards down in good spots.

You can also have one Vision Ward down per player, which lasts until it is destroyed or replaced (by placing another pink ward somewhere else). So, again, you can only contribute your 1 pink at a time; the rest has to be done by your teammates.

What the hell do you have to do to get a "S" rank? I've gotten it twice for Morg, before I hit level 5 with her, but I've had better games with her and gotten A/B ranks. There hasn't been anything more frusterating for me than going something like 7/0/15 and getting an A-.

Riot hasn't released the formula they use for mastery, but it's related to the role and champion you're playing and takes into account more than KDA, including stuff like CS. If you played Mid Morgana, for example, you might not get an S if you had terrible CS compared to average players.

What role do the coaches play? Are they like sports coaches, calling the shots/plays for the players to follow, scolding their players when they make bad plays? If not, who is in charge of the action in-game? Who decides who makes the main-five roster?

Esports coaches generally focus on developing relationships between players and focus communication in game. They tend to focus less on actual gameplay stuff and more on team dynamics and player health and stuff like that. The "coach" on the stage at the start of pro games is the "official coach" but can often be an analyst for the team, who is more focused on strategy and gameplay. These coaches (or analysts) coordinate the champion picks and bans, but leave once the game starts. In game, only the 5 players are able to communicate with each other, so they have to call their own shots.

Why are the players so young? Why are there so few people in their mid-twenties or older?

I think it has to do with younger people having more free time and are more inclined to play a ton of video games. A lot of the pros in this game have been playing for years since they were teens. Most burn out and retire before their mid-to-late 20s. It's a ton of work to stay competitive and it's pretty stressful. That's about all I know about it though.

How do I watch LoL when the World's are over. Specifically NA teams. I'm currently cheering for Cloud 9, because they're the only team with a Canadian on it :)

Riot's Twitch stream will show future LCS games once the regular season starts up again. You'd have to look elsewhere for games from other regions. LCK games are usually quite high quality, so I recommend starting there if you want to watch games outside of western regions. LoL Event Vods is a good place to catch up on games you missed, especially for regions like LCK where games are played at inconvenient times for westerners.

Hopefully that helped answer some of your questions. Feel free to ask if you need to know anything else!
