Someone was telling me they wanted to get into ADC and asked me for tips, especially concerning kiting since they said they usually just stand still in fights, so I wrote a pretty decently sized text on how I personally managed to get past that. Then it felt silly that it was going to waste on just that 1 person so I'll just post it here too in case anyone else finds it helpful. I know Latest Legend mentioned he's playing ADC, maybe this'll help you buddy. :^)

Ctrl + F "Orb walking" and read what I have to say about orb-walking there if you don't even know the very basics of orb-walking/kiting. Read "Attack move" too if you don't use attack move since if you're playing ADC without using attack move then you're a boosted animal. Shift + Right click is hard to use so you can try finding a key that works better for you, e.g. I have Attack Move Click (like the smart cast version of Attack Move) bound to T since it's so natural to use while having my fingers placed on QWER, and I can't remember the last time I misclicked ult because of it. :^)

When you stand still while fighting it's because orb-walking isn't natural enough to you yet that you can feel like you can do it properly in high pressure situations, so you just resort to standing still to make sure you don't cancel any auto-attacks. The trick to improving on this is to consciously force yourself to keep kiting rather than giving up and standing still, even if it leads to you cancelling some auto-attacks. Because that's the only way you can improve to stop cancelling auto-attacks, and kiting while cancelling some autos is still better than not kiting at all and dying faster. Even if you feel like kiting is pointless because you're about to die anyway, you need to keep kiting so at the very least you can do the most damage possible before dying. And sometimes you'll even surprise yourself by making huge outplays in situations you thought you were going to die, simply because you kept on kiting and playing your best rather than crumbling under pressure and standing still.

Examples of clips where I made totally-planned-not-accidental outplays because I kept my cool:

In the last clip I even cancelled my would-be last auto-attack by accident and nearly died for it, but you know I would have died even faster if I'd just stood still, and there would have been no chance to outplay like that.

Even if it's a really high pressure situation where you panic and just want to stand still, just force yourself to keep kiting. Even if you suck under pressure and cancel half your auto-attacks that's still better than standing still and it will allow you to improve and do even better in those situations in the future. When I started maining ADC that always happened to me too, even for up to a year afterwards maybe, and I guess it still happens to me on occasion (see: the last few auto-attacks of that Trist video).

But the more I practiced kiting to integrate it into my muscle memory, and the more I forced myself to keep kiting in high-pressure situations where I just wanted to stand still, the easier and more natural kiting became to the point where I don't have to force myself anymore, kiting is just my natural reaction to high-pressure situations where I'm probably about to die anyway, and rarely I may still crumble under pressure and stand still (again, see the end of that Trist clip), but now it's just an exception rather than standard for me.

And the fact that even in situations where I think I'm going to die I keep going and doing the best I can anyway means that I frequently make outplays that not even I'm expecting to happen, because I was just expecting to die and trying to put out as much damage as I could before it happened, and then the outcome of those situations sometimes surprises me.

Tl;dr: Read Trist guide, follow all the advice there, especially give the orb-walking section a read since that's what you apparently have the most trouble with, and then just practice practice practice, and force yourself to kite even when you just want to stand still, even if it means failing at first. Failing is improving. :)

I jungle a lot so to practice orb-walking I normally just practice it on my jungle camps as I farm so that I'm more used to it when I play other roles like adc.

For me what's most challenging is knowing when to seriously back off - like, when you and vynnie both backed off around uhh 0:23-0:29 in the first video.

Why did you give yourself so much space then?
If I helped you out, be sure to throw me a +Rep!

I backed off because Quinn turned towards me and since Rammus is such a greatly designed champion, my own auto-attacks dropped me to 50% HP, which was pretty much low enough for Quinn to either 1-shot me or otherwise take me out of the fight.
