Obviously the biggest gameplay changes this patch were the three reworks to Rek'Sai, Kindred and Malzahar. You can check out the details on their updated abilities above, but we'll cover the goals of each rework briefly here as well.

Rek'Sai has shifted away from the utility tank we've seen in professional play in the past towards a more aggressive, damage-oriented diver playstyle. She's lost her ability to knock up more than one target, but in return she's gained better damage scaling and is able to re-use Tunnels more frequently. Void Rush has been completely redesigned and now allows Rek'Sai to dash to a target champion she's recently damaged, dealing damage based on their missing health.

Kindred received a lot of damage tweaks, pushing them towards building more bonus attack damage. They've also lost their on-hit %hp damage from Mark of the Kindred in exchange for bonus attack range and enhanced basic abilities based on how many marks Kindred collects. Wolf's Frenzy can now be cast at a target location and Wolf can pass through terrain, while Mounting Dread has been shifted towards an execute, dealing significant bonus damage to targets below 15% health.

Malzahar received the most major changes to his Void Swarm and Nether Grasp. Rather than storing charges of Void Swarm and having individual Voidlings spawn more of themselves, Malzahar now has a flat 8 second cooldown on the ability and will summon extra Voidlings if he casts other abilities beforehand. Malzahar can summon up to 3 Voidlings with a single cast, but they will no longer spawn more of themselves. Voidlings will also now die in 1 attack from enemy champions or towers. Nether Grasp also received a large amount of base damage to the primary target at the cost of over half the damage of the Null Zone. This will make him more effective at killing his target (especially squishies), but he'll deal less % max hp damage and less AoE damage overall with his ultimate.

Other than these reworks, the most significant balance change was to Maokai. In an effort to push Maokai towards more defensive itemization and less ability power, Sapling Toss has lost half its ability power scaling and brush-empowered saplings now scale in duration based on Maokai's bonus health. Sapling movement speed also now scales with Maokai's level of Boots rather than his level. In addition, Sap Magic had some power shifted out of its base values and into its max-health scaling.

Other Changes

  • Ban phase changes:

    • 10-ban system will go live this patch, starting with Normal Draft on NA before rolling out to ranked queues and other regions. If you're unfamiliar with the 10-ban system, check out this post.

    • Tournament Draft will now use a split draft pick/ban phase, identical to eSports.

    • Custom draft pick will remain unchanged for now.

  • Client changes:

    • The Item Set creator ships this patch! You can now create custom item sets for specific champions and maps. The new item set creator allows you to start from a default recommended item set for a champion as well as a blank set.

    • You'll now find a “Recently Played” section at the bottom of your friends list that will display the names of players you've recently been in games with (as well as the champions they played), and will allow you to view their profiles, add them, block them, or drag to invite them to a lobby.

    • Invite privileges are now granted to all lobby members by default. The lobby host can still revoke invite privileges.

    • Intermediate bots have been re-added to the Twisted Treeline.

    • We made the mastery panel smaller to allow players to see the left/right better during champ select and be able tell whose turn it is and who they’re picking.

    • Overall improvements to champion select to make actions clearer.

    • Fixes to bugs that were blocking the ability to lock in your choice during champ select.

    • We gave the X on the lobby and end of game screen a makeover to give it more space.

    • Dragon Fist Lee Sin 's splash and in-game VFX have been adjusted. The dragon on his back is now gold in his splash, and now turns gold when he casts Dragon's Rage. (Chromas change the in-game color.)

    • Moved the “Materials” section to the top of Loot.

  • Elise's spiderlings, Heimerdinger's turrets (normal ones), Illaoi's tentacles, Malzahar's Voidlings, Shaco's Jack-in-the-boxes, Yorick's Mist Walkers and Zyra's Thornspitters and Vine Lashers no longer count towards your Minions Killed score (they still give gold though).

  • Removed floating combat text for crowd control effects (since they're now displayed above health bars).

A lot of great features this patch. I have been waiting for the Item Set Creator for a long time now.
