As everyone is saying, learning a few meta champs is always good. With comfort picks that might be off-meta, it's also good to understand why they aren't meta and be able to play around this.

Be aware of traits that factor into this like being very vulnerable early game, scaling quirks, weak roaming, the list goes on. Also be aware of the champion's strengths though and how that comfort or uncommon pick can catch the enemy team off-guard.

I'll use how I play Zyra mid for example, a very hipster pick, but a champion I am comfortable with. I'm aware that a few reasons she isn't meta because she's very vulnerable to ganks, she doesn't have as strong of a 2-item power spike as other midlaners, her roaming isn't amazing, and she is ridiculously squishy. What I take advantage of however, is Zyra's zoning patterns during laning phase, her damage during a counter-engage, her ability to siege, and how plants can assist with objective control.

However I don't spam Zyra every game, sometimes it's better to play a more meta champion that I have strong enough fundamentals with.

Comfort. I see way too many people that are actually stuck in silver who are so inclined on following the meta rules that they pretty much forget how to play with their very own minds instead.

Playing something that you are comfortable with is almost always better, as long as it's not something like urgot. I'm just assuming he's still really bad

While learning MetaPicks can be very good if you are just not comfortable playing them, or having a hard time getting use to them it's always better to just go with something you know well.

I remember a while back when Yasuo was super strong, I don't play or follow the game to much anymore so he could still be strong for all I know, but I could never get him down, no mater how many times I played him I always just sucked with him.

Sure I'll go with the comfort pick since it the "safe zone" to me. However, Meta pick definitely brings your skill to a whole next level in term of general since it requires tons of effort to excel.
