I was playing a match as Alistar a few minutes ago, and I enjoyed that "saving the team" thing. Disabling enemies all the time, that was ****ing fun
And my friend asked me if I have a tank, because he and 2 other friends are good at dealing damage. I stopped, started to think hard, and told him that I dont have a tank, I have tanky and offtanks, but I have the IP to buy any champion and need an advice

So here I am, looking for an advice. I need a viable tank, just that
If possible, exclude Amumu and Rammus from the list, I didnt enjoy them

My favorite tank is personally Galio. There are a LOT of GREAT builds for him here on Moba.

Galio turns 50% of his Magic Resist into AP, so he is super strong against an AP heavy team, but he's pretty damned good anywhere if you ask me. It isn't hard to stack some armor on him, plus, he's a good support.

I've done damn near everything with him, to a degree of success. He can solo top, he can AP mid (and actually counterpicks quite a few popular AP mids), and he is an excellent support bottom. His ultimate ensures that they are ALL focusing the tank during those late game teamfights.

Definitely my top pick for a tank (I'm currently at a 75% win ratio with him in ranked).

Hope I helped ^_^

If you want to have a major part of team fights take Malphite. His ultimate is just epic for team fights and you have slow aswell, so there's a lot you can do for your teammates.

Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.

This.

Other than that, Cho'Gath is a pretty fun/solid pick imo. He can go top, jungle or (like galio) go mid. He has really good sustain with his passive and can dish out incredible damage with only a ROA,in terms of 'saving your teammates' he does very well,he has alot of cc with his knockup and long silence.

EDIT : And he has a Gentleman skin. Do it.

Alistar Galio Malphite Amumu and to a lesser extent Leona Shen and Sejuani are all great tanks that have a big teamfight presence.

Rammus is a great tank choice as well, but hes built more to take one of the enemy out of the fight through his long taunt.

Full tanks are basically extinct these days unfortunately. There's no champion in the game that can withstand the damage from a properly built AD carry for more than a few seconds.

All the champions people listed here are AP or AS offtanks. :P

In terms of the support role besides Alistar, both Leona and Taric stand out both having stuns and snares to peel off enemies on your carries and substantial durability (although Taric is primarily armor-based defenses). I've seen some Shen supports as well but don't really think hes that effective until the changes finally come for him.

Looking at junglers, with again the exceptions you mentioned then the following would meet the criteria: Udyr, Shyvana, Trundle, Skarner, Jarvan IV (if built so), Maokai, Cho'Gath (Feast dependent) etc.

Distinguishing a true tank at solo top rather then a bruiser going atmogs is more difficult and some have been mentioned in the junglers list but I'd say: Singed, Nasus (his ultimate/passive), Mordekaiser (not quite sure, doesn't really cause much disruption) and probably some others which have slipped my mind.

I don't like to think of Galio as an offtank. In most games, yes people will start building AP. But if you are trying to go the true tank / support route, you will be getting mainly Magic Resist / Armor only, getting your AP from your passive. Usually, when I play Galio, I stack only tank items, forgoing a lot of the AP that some people tend to throw in there.

In terms of slows/stuns/team support I think Galio takes the cake here as well. His E is a slow, a speed boost for team, and some damage. His Q is a slow and some damage. His W adds MR/Armor to teammates (as well as giving you HP), and his R is decently long taunt with some pretty good damage as well.

and yes, Luther is correct... against a fully-built, properly played, well positioned AD, tanks are useless. There is just too much damage, and armor penetration is a hell of a lot cheaper than the armor itself. 1 Item cuts through 40% of Armor, no matter how much you have :/ Sad days. Still, if you play a tank right early game, you could be a huge deciding factor in making sure that AD that you are worried about does not get a chance to reach a full build :P

Problem is that these days AD carries can punch through any amount of armour.

I could build Udyr with 300 armour and 4k health and spam Iron Mantle every fight, and I'd still get taken down in less than ten seconds by an equally fed AD carry. Especially since they removed dodge.
