I'm sure most of you (like me) have heard it all when it comes to Online Gaming and what it does to our relationships. In my circle, I know a married couple where 'she' limits her use of the computer to updating facebook and checking e-mail where 'he' get's permission to stay home from social events so he can go on raids with his guild, vs. another married couple I know who only play together and use 'gaming' as a way to spend time together. I'm not married, but according to this survey put out by Brigham Young University, 36% of us - gamers - are, and 75% of our spouses wish we spent less time on the battlefield.

Quoted:
"It's common knowledge that many couples experience challenges around gaming," Lundberg said. "Particularly when husbands are heavy gamers, it clearly has a negative impact on their marriages."

If your partner doesn't like you because you play too many games, then why are you with that person?

In contrast, if you're starting to dislike your partner, because they'd rather play a game than spend time with you, then again why are you with them?

People need to not date, or marry people they're gonna have problems like this with :o

Because it can sometimes be far more complicated than just dating someone based on their hobbies.

I've been in a relationship for 6 years with my beloved one, we've moved in together and stuff. Still she often tells me that she'd like me to play LoL less often. And I understand her for the sole reason that I know she is right. You can't just be in a relationship while spending your evenings talking to your team on Mumble, because that cuts you off the whole world outside. And while that's not that much of a problem when you are alone, getting home after a hard day and finding the person you are living with talking with other people for hours when you only have a couple hours before going to sleep is not really something you'd wish to anyone, would you ?

I understand people who are complaining about it because it can be terrible to bear. My gf doesn't mind me playing games, or even lol without a mic, because I can talk with her and do stuff at the same time ( well not really when I'm in a lol game, but between games i don't have to do another one because my friends want to ). And that's not even a matter of love, I love my gf much more than I've never loved anywone and that's the same for her. I don't even dare imagine for people playing WoW and spending whole evenings on raids.

So yeah, I guess I can say online gaming sort of has a negative impact on my relationship, because most of the time it requires me to put my attention on people other than my gf when all she wants is to talk to me.

Still single, but in theory I think that by finding a girl, you naturally will spend less time on gaming, because the feelings for the girl would be stronger than feelings of gaming.

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Srsly, it's just the same as every other hobby that takes your full attention while doing it:
Things like going out with friends to play basketball/tipple a few beers and such.

Since on individual cant hope to surpress another both have to compromise.

Example: Heavy male gamer and non-gaming female.

While he reasonably skips out on some social events/stays out late (including gaming), he will therefore visit some less heady events/ do stuff she wants to do and vice versa.

It's possible to work, if not at least on part of the couple in question is at fault.
