Having someone directly mentor you or watching better players who commentate on what they are doing are are 2 great ways of learning and becoming better (ignoring the obvious trial and error of self learning).

I'm gonna be pretty blunt and honest. If your friend wants to be better, playing bot games isn't the way to go. Yes, bot games are fine if you want to practice last hitting while doing the basics but I really suggest him playing normal games in SR, TT or Dominion so they can get a feel for how players play other champions because I'm sure we can all agree that bots can't combo as a "real player" would. If you wanna be an amazing friend, queue up with him in normals and if you're a true friend, help him out even if he's 'feeding' or etc.

Since you're asking for playstyles like Varus, I'm going to assume that he likes the "AD" role. Point him to champions like Ashe, Miss Fortune, Graves and when he THINKS he has the hang of an AD carry, point him to Vayne since she requires a decent amount of skill. I recommend you to show him different AD champions because if he likes a "role" and find other champions like the one he's used to, he'll be more motivated to learn. The champions I listed above are similar in skills or the difficulty isn't too high compared to Varus. For example, Miss Fortune's E( Make it Rain) is almost like Varus' E.

Regarding his playstyle, watch/tell him HOW to last hit and why it's important if he does not know. Try to find a way for him to consistently last hit like for me, I listen to a nice melodic song and it keeps my mind calm, allowing me to concentrate with last hitting, harassing while watching for ganks. Teach them the common builds in this "meta" and suggest them to stick to it but allow them to theorycraft so they can think more about their role. Example of AD builds this meta is Boots 3Pot -> Zerkers -> Doran's(if needed) -> Infinity Edge -> Phantom Dancer -> Last Whisper -> Bloodthirster/Last Whisper.

Last but not least, watch their positioning if you can in team fights and while laning. Positioning as AD is one of the most important things and it can sway the entire game. I'm sure it'll take him a while to understand/learn but be a good friend and help him out because I'm gonna be honest here, he's not going to fully understand how to position if he's literally been playing nothing but bot games like you said!

Anyways, good luck with your friend and just be a great friend, helping them when they need your help. Don't be afraid to point out their mistakes but be sincere about it.

Very nicely put, Xaioli. +1... Oh, nevermind. You don't need that. :P

Also, have your friend play Ezreal. I truly can't tell you exactly how much Ezreal really taught me about positioning, skill-shots, last hitting, kiting, chasing, escaping/juking, and map awareness.
