So it seems like the general consensus is that Riven is SUPER strong top. I think I understand the basics of it - spammable shield, high mobility, hard cc, and pretty high damage. This may be a stupid question given what I just listed, but does his lack of inherent sustain set him back in lane? I REALLY want to learn to play Riven up to his potential, but I just cant seem to succeed with him. It's doubly frustrating because he is known as being such a strong strong pick. Any tips on how to play Riven to really exploit his strong kit?

Also, are there any particular champs he is countered by? Or that he counters? And lastly - is my favorite exile viable in the jungle? Thanks!

1st off, Riven is a female. As in boobs and vagina.

Now that that's settled, about playing her:

- Her early sustain are pots and her shield. She doesn't recover per se, but she can move in/dodge damage with it, so that's precious;
- Try auto-attacking between each Q, makes the overall dps larger;
- Measure harass, use mobility to lull abilities that aren't targetted (Darius' Q and E, Olaf's Q, etc);
- She is "countered" by champs who can compete with her mobility through CC or inner mobility, like Nunu & Willump, Kayle, Yorick, Rumble, Kennen, etc. However, Riven has the advantage that she can dish out tons of damage in one combo and she can also mill low-sustain opponents down.
- She "counters" low dps starters, melees with less mobility, champs with weak early sustain (mana or hp wise): Nasus, Katarina, gives a hard time to Cho'Gath, etc.

The thing about Riven is that giving her one kill can damage your laning phase irreparably, to the point where you can't farm.

Riven is undoubtedly strong but she takes a bit of getting used to, she has zero sustain and no ranged poke, and as mentioned above anyone who can counter her mobility really gives her a hard time

The brilliant thing about Riven is champions with poke are largely predictable, and a few levels in your Valor and you'll be either able to dodge it or soak it completely

Here as a few things I found useful when I first started playing her

- Level as follows R>W>E>Q, Q does great damage, but the CD remains the same regardless of level, leveling your Ki Burst and Valor allows you to harass much more effectively and regularly

- Typically, harassing on Riven consists of using Valor to approach your target attacking once, Ki Bursting attacking once again for your passive, and then using Broken Wings to get back, of course if you're stomping, proceed to push your advantage by Q'ing your opponent, but when learning Riven this is a really safe form of harassment

- Your ult is incredibly strong early game, once I get it I usually look to secure a kill, not many champions can duel with a level 6 Riven

- The biggest thing with Riven is that she can snowball completely out of control, if you play her ballsy enough, buy offensively rather than defensively to take advantage of how AD links into everyone of her skills, you won't believe the amount of Riven's I see who start strongly and end up rushing a Frozen Mallet or something equally pointless for her

Overall, she's very strong but not invincible, start learning her by playing her safely and gradually start pushing your early game strength :)

I, and I think everyone who enjoys top, love Riven.

A few tips other than the good ones that have already been given:

1. Your main source of damage is your passive, dun waste it
2. Do not build warmorgs/mallet + atmas, never you don't need HP you need AD to power up your shield
3. Some people like to rush wriggle on her, tho that's not completly wrong, it's not optimal; a couple if not 3 doran blades will cost you less and give you excelent stats on your way to a bloodthirster rush
4. Despite the fact your item path should and will vary form game to game you will need to rush a bloodthirster always, and your defensive item of choise yould always be Guardian angel.

to sum up, get AD and you'll be an happy Riven

Basically what they said. The most important factor that makes her strong is her four blinks and passive which provides her massive amounts of damage. Riven doesn't need the sustain because she can force someone to not even be able to get near her.

Riven does horrible against Teemo. She isn't necessarily "countered" by any champ but she has a hard time against Olaf, Darius (people who can out-harass + damage her) and Kennen (ranged champs).

Riven does well against champs who have no disengage / escapes.

And also, yes Riven can jungle.

Jungle Riven is best picked when you have a tankier top lane and if the enemies are squishy.

Riven's level two ganks are insanely strong. They're a bit below the level of Ali's level 2 ganks.

With jungle Riven, powerclear objectives and gank like a madman.

Is it possible to build early game Riven like Bush Garen?

3 doran's blade, whatever boots, and a BF sword?

Then you camp bushes and faceroll the enemy when he farms minions.

Thanks to Amazing Monkey for the sig. Just like his name, he's amazing

I hate this kind of play. High mobility/mobility countering champs can still manage to run AND they got money and exp bonus from last hits while you were too busy trying to be a jerk.
Thank you Tsuki for the sig!

Riven doesn't need 3 blades, delays her build.

She also has no set skilling, very versatile. Doesn't need to camp bushes because she can kill you anyways. Low CD on her ulti, you can use it very often (as in, kill him with it an come back to lane with it up again).

Also very strong tower diver with her E shield.

And a good tower diver juking when she suffers it. Valor to run around, stun, jump around, ulti and the potential exhaust if she carries it.

If u realy want to faceroll with riven go mid, eat ur oponent and roam. Its super easy because their mid probably has no armour, little health and wil die reaaaaaly quick to you. So if you gank after shutting down your opponent you will probably win.
Some say he watched the lord of the rings sixty twelve times and he was pissed off at gandalf for stealing his idea for a halloween costume. all we know he's called McLovin.
