Hi Guys,

Long time reader, first time poster.

Names: Freakin Out
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Server: NA

Iā€™m currently level 20 and have been playing for around 3-4 weeks after not playing for over 2 years, maybe more. Iā€™m really starting to get into it again and want to improve my game.

Iā€™ve brought two champion packs so I have quite a roster of champions to pick from and Iā€™ve played them all in dominion to get a feel for them and Iā€™m currently playing through them all again in 5v5 on their ā€˜mainā€™ roles to ensure I understand how they all play and hopefully locate a champion/role I have ā€˜chemistryā€™ with.

Now Iā€™m not someone who dominates a game nor am I someone who feeds. I feel as though Iā€™m someone who is just there to make up the numbers and not really having a major impact on the game one way or the other.
I understand how CS is important as well as moving as a team when sh*t gets real as towers start to go down. I also alt tab to this website to check runes/masteries before going into a fight with my selected champion. As well as skill/item build orders throughout the game.

Although, I want to go to that next level where I can be a major asset to my team and potentially be a ā€˜game changerā€™ which will obviously have a positive impact on me when I get around to finally playing ranked.

I feel as though I want to jungle as my main with a top game secondary ā€“ but I honestly want to learn every champion and every role.

Is anyone happy to play a few games/offer any advice to help potentially take my game to the next level?
(I mean, can you recall a moment where you did/learnt something that took your game to another level?)

Or am I currently on the right track and itā€™ll all start to come to me with experience and should just be grateful that Iā€™m not being a burden on my team while trying to learn the game? Lol

Iā€™m not a ā€˜ragerā€™ and always helpful and courteous no matter how poorly the team is performing.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments.

If any fellow aussies (or anyone for that matter) is looking for someone to level with and enjoy good company in their games ā€“ add me in game as its always more fun to play with company then going solo.

Cheers,
Freakin Out

Ok sorry for the essay - Iā€™m an Analyst by trade, so I can help myself on details... Lol.
But mentors - if you specialize in a certain trade and have some spare time on your hands, I would love to learn from you and ideally would love to learn from people of each trade.

Thanks in advance guys.

IF you want to make a great impact in the game, you need to play ADC, solo-top, AP/AD mid, or jungler - basically champions that can carry. You cannot carry as a support. Generally champions that are "OP" will have a greater impact on the game because they outperform other champions due to the state of the meta unless you excel and have great synergy with niche picks.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, the first rule to improving your game is simple. Don't die . . . or rather, don't die unnecessarily. By not dying, you prevent feeding your opponent free gold. You already know how important CS is so if you don't die and just farm (and hopefully kill your opponent from time to time) you'll win your lane. Winning the lane increases your chances of winning the game because you are a bigger threat than one other person on the team.

On top-lane you need to know when to be aggressive and passive. One kill whether it be a gank or an outplay can snowball the lane to your favor or your opponents. Therefore, it is important to have good mechanics and common sense.

Mechanics
1. Don't fight your opponent if they have more creep than you. Creeps do hella damage early on and contribute to most first bloods.

2. Always ward. A gank can snowball a lane as I said above. Sometimes buying a pink to clear out where your opponent warded will make them play less aggressively as they don't know where your jungler is.

3. Try to counter pick your opponent. 20% of games are decided in champion select. However, if you are not familiar with a champion that counter picks your opponent, pick a champion you know well enough to play. Playing with a counter pick and not knowing what they do is bad because you'll feed for obvious reasons.

4. Know when to freeze the lane and when to push it. Freeze the lane where you want it frozen. Say you're losing. Freeze it near your tower so the enemy will think twice before being aggressive on you as they are over extended, and they may get hit by the turret if they hit you. Push the lane if your opponent backs so they lose creep (gold and experience).

5. ONLY roam if you can secure a kill. If you can't secure a kill or get anything out of it you just lost experience and gold from lane.

That's all I can think of for now. Watching youtube videos of reliable players or streams helps as well. Most of the guides on Mobafire are meh but they are great for general knowledge until you learn to craft your own build. You don't necessarily need to publish it though.

Thanks Creedless, what you posted seems rather 'simple' and honestly, Iā€™ve never really thought of it like that. Thinking about it now Iā€™ve always kind of ā€˜just played in the moment' and never really taken all that into account.
I mean, I should check if Iā€™m losing the CS to my opponent and if I am, I should play with more care, not look to engage and just try and harass him while remaining safe and try and over extend him towards my tower to set up my jungler for a gank to give me the upper hand on him.

And you're right, really focusing on winning my lane against my opponent does put my team in a better position then his team, as I will be more of an asset then he is and might even be able to bully him out of creeps to extend my lead.

In relation to roaming - you're right again, standing there not generating exp/gold is giving a leg up on the other team.
While waiting for my team to come together (or whatever) I should look to farm the jungle nearby for gold/exp.

Thanks for your help mate - I feel kind of silly now as everything you mentioned just seems so simple, but would have a massive impact.

Anyone reading this, feel free to add me in game for a game or two. And any game a mentor can spare for me, I would greatly appreciate the experience you can offer.

Thanks again mate,
Freakin Out

Also, would you know of a link that can give us a quick guide as to which champions counter which?
Even better if it gives a bit of a description as to why :)

Sorry to be a pain - but this would be awesome :)

Haha thanks, man. I'm glad you appreciate it. It's the little things like that and mechanics that win the lane and hopefully the game.

Another tip i'd like to give you pertains to jungling.

Basically, learn the champions and the skills they have. Also, check their inventory from time to time. If they come into lane with a ward you need to ask your laner where the ward is or you waste your time ganking if you can't secure a kill or make them blow a summoner spell. These factors are broken down more specifically below.

1. Enemy ward coverage (ask laner where enemy ward is so you can avoid being spotted)

2. Enemy summoner spells (if you gank you can burn their Flash and loop around to gank again because their escape is gone, or if they already burned it you can simply kill them)

3. Health of your teammate and you (if you gank and your teammate is near death, he may end up dying in the process, making the gank relatively worthless as it is a one for one trade. No one gets ahead. Therefore, you can tell him to go back and heal while you cover the lane and save the turret)

4. Health of the poor guy you're ganking in relation to your teammate (basically if you can kill them or not. if you can't kill them, getting them low enough will make them go back to recall and they'll lose creep because of it)

5. where the enemy jungler is (think if you were the enemy jungler, who would you gank. Consider who is over-extended, who warded. This gives you the mindset to know where a gank is going to happen so you can counter gank or at least counter jungle if they gank someone)

6. cool-downs (mostly on if they have a jump or escape spell like Shunpo. this is like accounting for Flash. For example, you see Katarina use her Shunpo to kill a creep [EDIT: and you are waiting in a bush at mid-lane.] She has no escape for ten seconds. Therefore, you can gank her and possibly kill her due to her having no escapes, barring Flash.

7. Jungle timers (more counterjungling basically. Blue spawns every 5 minutes. Most people grab blue at 2 minutes, so blue will respawn at five minute intervals. Be there at 7:30 to steal or kill their jungler. Same applies to red.

Oh, this video and channel will take your jungling to the next level.

EDIT: http://lolcounter.com/ this is a general list used for counter picking and shows what mechanics counter what champion.

The simplest advice I can give you, Freakin Out, is to join the MOBAFire in-game chat room (instructions here) and sign up for our weekly inhouse games (sign up here). The NA chat room is usually pretty lively, so you'll have a decent chance of finding people who will be willing to play with you if you ask. (Although you might have to ask a bit often; like with any group, it can take time before people will really open up to a new face.) There are also several threads here where people are perfectly happy to mentor, so I suggest looking for one of them if you really want a mentor.

I'd be careful about using lolcounter, though. It uses community suggestions for which champions counter each other, and the community is pretty stupid.
