Given what I have noticed about the Moba community and the community of people that play LoL in general I would say that the majority are in high school or college. Taking that into account my thought was that many of you do not have a direct communication with a person in the field of science/R&D/QA/QC/Manufacturing. For that reason I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread that allowed you to ask questions regarding science occupations. Hopefully by providing some information I can steer people towards or away from science occupations. First let me provide some information about myself:

- Started my undergraduate degree in Secondary Education with a focus in Chemistry and switched to Chemistry only before I graduated.

- Obtained my Masters Degree in Chemistry. My research was Biochemistry based and involved the mutation of a novel enzyme.

- I taught freshman level organic and inorganic chemistry during my graduate program for two years as a teaching assistant.

- Since graduating I obtained a job in the R&D department at a biotechnology company that designs and produces medical diagnostic products. I finished my first product within my first year at the company.

So my idea behind this is for you to ask questions about science as an occupation in the private sector. You can also ask me about science in the academic sector as I had good relations with my professors and I also had a short stint as a community college instructor. You could also ask me about secondary science education as I was in the field originally and have a number of good friends still in the field. I suppose you could also ask me questions regarding biochemical theory. I would rather you not ask me moral dilemma questions involving science as they can get off topic and heated but if you really need an answer I can try to provide as objective an answer as possible.

Keep in mind I have lived my whole life in the united states so answering questions about the rest of the globe will be difficult for me to provide detailed answers. Not sure how this will be received, but worst case scenario is it turns into a spiderman thread and I get some laughs. If little activity is seen on this thread no sweat off my back.

Thanks to jhoijhoi for my signature!

First, the link tells you that.
Second, that's a biological point of view.

Chemist my question is this

Is there anyway to test for Macroevolution in a lab?

I know that microevolution has been done in a lab, but I can't seem to find anything on macroevolution.

How do I shot science?
How I mine for science?
How is science formed?

On topic, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on what sorts of biochemical research are getting funded right now, and why. I know a touch about how funding influences medical research (insofar as one can without working in the field or otherwise trying to inform oneself much), and I'd find an insider account of how it works in other (related or otherwise) fields interesting.

GrandmasterD, Cuddowls, and Wiki are all correct. I have defined life scientifically as the interaction between charged particles. Ultimately when you come down to the core of what causes the smallest building blocks to come together it is charge. Charge repulsion and attraction also leads to the exchange of energy and energy exchange is vital for life.

you could also say that life is what you make of it :)

Cuddowls...to prove macroevolution? well you can definitely run experiments to show microevolution by continually breeding bacteria and observing mutation that either leads to successful growth or death. this is possible due to the extremely short time required for bacteria to reproduce. this in my opinion is a form of evolution through adaptation and change to create a more successful offspring. you can even accelerate this adaptation through the introduction of chemicals in small amounts to force the bacteria to either adapt and evolve to the introduced chemical or die.

proving macroevolution is difficult through breeding but you can breed flies relatively quickly. you can also manipulate their genes through breeding and mutation. you can cause them to have 3 eyes or put a leg where an antenna should be. but to see it occur naturally through repeated breeding is difficult as most macro species are more complex and do not lend themselves as easily to natural mutation...also their reproduction cycle isn't as quick as bacteria such as E.Coli that have a full cycle every 20 minutes. I didn't study macro species nearly as much as I did micro so it is difficult for me to answer you better than that.

hopefully that provides a little useful information.
