Yeeeeaaaaaaah, this is why I dont watch the news too much now. The fact that this is now in Austrailia shouldnt be surprising, but still kind of is.

Yesterday, a teacher in my country(Greece) attempted to suicide in class by cutting his veins.

On topic now, it's really hard to control the reactions of mentally unstable people, especially in a country such as the U.S.A, where guns are valued way too much and almost everyone is allowed to have one in his possession.

this shooting isnt really going to change anything, just like the other ones

protectors of the old 2nd amendment will still scream "IF OBAMA TAKES OUR GUNS AWAY WE TURN INTO SOCIALISM" and people against guns will still think that outlawing them will keep them out of peoples hands, cuz you know thats worked for drugs so far right?

anyways the kid was obviously ****ed in the head if the apparent reason for the shooting was some 15 year old kid saying something racist and a girl breaking up with him

"The motive for the shooting remains unclear however it is thought he was suffering after a recent breakup with a girl."

I don't know whether we should discuss guns in this topic, but I think that outlawing them will keep them out of people's hands. Here in the Netherlands only people with a license can own certain kinds of guns, depending on the license type, and I think that works. There are still people that own guns, but it's known who they are so it's easy to keep it in check. When there are guns available for everyone at every corner of the street everyone can start shooting in no time.

Of course it's not manageable to completely ban drugs and guns, but if you know where the stuff is and who owns it, it's definitely doable.

In most of the anti-gun countries this works because guns weren't allowed in the first place, for a few decades at least (without heavy restrictions).

Let's say you outlaw guns in the US today. What then?
Nationwide call for every registered gun to be turned in? Costs unbearable, takes a ton of time and what to do with all those guns?

And then there's the problem of millions of unregistered ones floating around. Mostly the ones that are used by criminals, which are the troublemakers to begin with.

Plus the big pro-gun party (which includes a ****ton of influential folks) who would riot and most likely not hand them over freely.

No matter what, it will take a giant load of time to do this.
I probably would start by introducing heavy punishment for possession of unregistered weaponry and force gun-nuts to die out by applying great taxes on private gun possession.

But even if you have some clues on how to do it, problem is to get them going without being sabotaged by the corporation controlled politican system (=lobbying).

Basically the same would happen as with the other countries. Like you said, it might take a decade or two to get where you want to get. You could start by making the regulations for selling and buying new guns harsher. When valid owners die, the license(I didn't know such a thing existed in the US) will be withdrawn and the gun has to be turned in. If it isn't, you're illegally owning a gun and that should be a serious offense, like you said.

I don't think that applying great taxes would work out, that may increase illegal gun possession, and then you lose sight of it.

Yeah, if it were to happen it had to be in the constitution. And even then it'll be hard to maintain the process over several governments.

owning a gun illegally is already a pretty serious offense (http://www.cga.ct.gov/2012/rpt/2012-R-0345.htm) in pretty much all states but michigan, generally its a $1000 fine or 6 months in prison

also you really didnt know you needed to have a license to get a gun in the US? like you really thought people were just buying them at your friendly neighborhood gun store? i get that the US has proven itself to be ****ty with gun laws but its not like were a third world country

and to be honest the consitution is 200+ years old, the people that wrote the second amendment were using muskets that took 3 minutes to reload one bullet, now people are have guns that can shoot dozens of bullets in way less time, the law should be changed as the technology grows but it isnt and thats a problem

I mean, just because guns are illegal to purchase / own without a license doesn't mean that people won't stop procuring guns illegally. If someone REALLY wants to buy & then use a gun, they'll find a way.

Perhaps the better way to go about this kind of thing would be to improve the quality of mental health care, to reduce the frequency that hysterical people go on murderous rampages
