CSL Trinity closes out the year for collegiate League of Legends

What is CSLoL?

The CSLoL is the League of Legends section of the Collegiate Star League. The Collegiate Star League started with a Starcraft 2 showmatch between Princeton and MIT in January of 2009, the actual league started in February. The league is now in Season 5 and consists of 250 universities from the United States and Canada.

The league allows the spectator to share the same experience that their college classmates experience when watching their football or basketball teams (in Canada I guess it is hockey). The competition is pure and it is all about becoming the best team in the collegiate leagues. The action is exciting and if you don't believe me, watch game 1 of the finals below.

The finals between Carnegie Mellon University versus University of Maryland - College Park

Carnegie Mellon University battle it out with the Terrapins of University of Maryland - College Park

Carnegie Mellon University started out the first game of the finals in a quick manner. The university from California took a 2 kill lead before the 3 minute mark, giving their middle and bottom lane huge advantages. The University of Maryland - College Park's AD carry, Harkua ( Ezreal), was able to catch up and get ahead of Laudandus ( Vayne) from CMU by winning the creep score battle by quite a lot. However, CMU kept making plays and shutting down comebacks from UMCP. The problem was that CMU could not finish the game despite a huge lead. The game went into the super late game where anything can happen, and anything did. UMCP's AP carry, acidicmisigoy ( Veigar) was able to get really bursty with his Rabadon's Deathcap and Deathfire Grasp. The little yordle was going around three shotting the CMU team. The team from Maryland was able to take a really good teamfight and was able to push for the win despite being down a lot of kills and over 10k in gold.

The Terriers of Carnegie Mellon started out the game in the same fashion albeit a lot slower this time. If the spectator looked at the score screen at any point, they would have thought Carnegie Mellon was in the lead. However, the fighting Terrapins of UMCP was able to maintain a gold lead by taking down towers early and often. It was obvious that UMCP had a good strategy and after the game the captain, Harkua, said that the team focused on objectives and getting to late-game in order to win the game. The strategy paid off as UMCP were able to take a 25 minute baron and they pushed almost non-stop for the next 5 minutes with the Anivia, Nidalee, and Graves being too much to handle.

University of Maryland - College Park, with the win today, was able to take home two of the four tournaments for CSL this year. The first tournament they won this year was back in September where they beat the University of Texas in the finals. UMCP took 4th in the CSL Prime tournament in November and December. The tournament in February, CSL Redux, they didn't place top 4. All in all, the Terrapins were able to win 2 out of 4 tournaments this season and prove that they are the best college team in the CSL.

A Quick Interview with CSLoL Head Admin, Nick Soh

Hi, what is your name and where are you located?

Quoted:
My name is Nick 'SallyDesu' Soh, I'm from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Why did CSL decide to get into League of Legends?

Quoted:
Well after the huge success and growth of the SC2 division of the CSL, we decided that it would be in our best interest to reach out to more gaming communities to further advance the Collegiate eSports scene. Naturally LoL was the best choice for the next game to dive into, as the community and fan base of the game is huge, and we had already heard from teams that they would love to see CSL take on the LoL scene.

There have been 4 tournaments over this past year, do you feel they have been a success?

Quoted:
It has been a steady incline from the first tournament to this one, with each tournament we have gained more participation, exposure, and viewership. They have been very successful, and that success is what keeps us moving forward and growing as an organization and community.

Where do you see the CSL LoL going next season?

Quoted:
It's actually very exciting because we plan to launch a full season format in the fall, similar to our existing SC2 season that has been going on for almost 5 years now. We'll be seeing a league format with group divisions, weekly matches, much larger prize pools, and some more awesome content to add to it.

Do you have any shoutouts?

Quoted:
I'd like to give shoutouts for all the staff at CSL and CSLoL, you guys have done a fantastic job with all of our tournaments to date, especially with TRINITY that we just finished. There is absolutely no way that CSLoL could be as successful as it is today without your undying support and enthusiasm with the project, and your phenomenal teamwork together.

Also shoutouts to eSports Canada, and my boys back at Dalhousie University and the Dalhousie eSports Society.

And one last shoutout to Mobafire for including CSL in this awesome interview and launch of their eSports division.
