Magic the Gathering Hall of Famer, Brian Kibler, talks about LoL and new game

Here with Brian Kibler, Magic the Gathering Hall of Famer but also a League of Legends player. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I've been playing Magic and other TCGs competitively for pretty much my entire life. I started playing on the Magic Pro Tour, the very first pro tour, when I was 15. I have since had a lot of success. I won two of the Pro Tour events, I'm in the Magic Hall of Fame, and I'm also a game designer. I work on the deck-building game called Ascension and on the upcoming digital trading card game - SolForge.
So I've seen you play League of Legends on your stream. What are your favorite positions, champions?
I generally play top lane and junglers. My two favorite champions are Udyr and Shyvana but I have been playing a lot of Maokai lately as well. I generally like mobile, tough, bruiser types, the character that can add a lot of map control to the game.
Do you follow the competitive scene?
I keep track of the tournaments going on. I wish I had more of an opportunity to watch the games here at PAX. I swung by the tournament hall a couple of times and got sucked in because the games were pretty awesome. I was stoked to see TSM won. I follow Dyrus's stream pretty frequently and we found out that we have mutual fans on Twitter. I'll post to him and people will be like, "OHH Worlds Colliding!"
So you are a TSM fan?
Yeah, I think Dyrus is one of my favorite people to watch play. I also hear that Xpecial and Chaox play Magic, that makes them cool in my book.
I feel like there are a lot of LoL players that play Magic.
Probably true, definitely a lot of overlap. I'll play in groups of friends of mine who are all magic players. Actually, all the guys from work, that I design games with, play LoL. We'll occasionally have streams going while we are working.
Out of the competitive tournaments, what is your favorite to watch?
The big tournaments with teams coming from all over the world are super cool. I'm kind of bummed that I will be playing in a Magic tournament during the World Finals that is in the area, I live in Southern California, and I would really like to be able to go watch that. To be able to see the top North American teams compete with the top teams from Korea, who are really now getting into the scene, seems super exciting.
Since you are in the southern California area, they will have a Battle Arena down there for Season 3, I bet you can catch some games then.
That would be sweet. I think League of Legends is an amazing spectator game. It translates so well to an observer's perspective, it is really clear what is going on, and I think the shoutcasters have come a long way to really make the game exciting and easy to follow.
Tell us about SolForge.
SolForge is our new project. It's a digital trading card game that we designed in partnership with Richard Garfield, the original designer of Magic the Gathering. It is a free to play game that is very similar to League of Legends. You will be able to play the game and earn points to upgrade the cards you use in your deck or you can spend money and buy booster packs and get cards that way.
The game is currently on Kickstarter. We are very close to our goal now. We have gotten a great response from the demos we have done both here at PAX and at GenCon earlier this month. We are really exciting by all the strong support we have seen so far.
The game involves playing creatures in various lanes on the board. Anytime you play a card, that card levels up. So, there are 40 cards, you draw 5 cards per term, every time you play a card the upgraded version of that card goes into your discard pile, every 4 turns you level up and you get a chance to draw your higher power cards.

Sounds interesting! What will the game be available on?
It will initially be launched on iOS and PC. We plan to have an android version available at the late in 2013.
Will there be a tournament scene?
We will have tournaments available all the time online. Depending on the response we get when it launches, we may end up having a bigger tournament scene as well.
Anything else?
It is great seeing League of Legends being so big in the esports scene, the productions we see at PAX, just how big gaming can be. It was pretty awesome. This week I played in the Magic Players Championship in Seattle, came from that which was an amazing event that had amazing production. With what Riot is doing with League of Legends, it is just awesome to see how big gaming can get and I'm excited to be a part of it.
Thanks to Brian for talking with us and sharing about his upcoming game! The Kickstarter for Solforge ends in just a few days, check it out here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1965800643/solforge-digital-trading-card-game
