The R Word

If you have played any online games you know that the online gaming community is not the friendliest around. Racial slurs and phrases like "get raped" have become commonplace, but should we really just accept this? Even if someone stands up and says "hey that's hurtful" the typical response is that they should grow a thicker skin and put up with it because this is the internet. Is this the community we want to be a part of?

Well some people are saying "no" There have been several articles and discussions recently on the subject of using the word "rape/raped" to mean an uncontested win. It is very likely that the word "rape" will trigger a painful memory for a rape victim, similar to the sounds of bullets to a soldier with PTSD. However, what you readers might not know is that 42% of gamers are female. This study also states that the average age of a gamer is 37. Another set of numbers that may surprise you is that 1 out of 6 women and 1 out of 33 men will be a victim of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. The same study also states that 80% of victims are under the age of 30, which is well within the age range of the average gamer.

Dyrus of Team SoloMid recently made a public apology at IPL4 for using the word "rape" after a fan of his approached him and asked him to stop using the word. Dyrus apologized in front of thousands of people, and right after winning the tournament. I think the fact that Dyrus is willing to do this is very commendable, and I am hopeful that others will follow in his footsteps.

In my opinion, this isn"t about banning words or censorship; it is about changing the perception of the community. We have become so desensitized to words like: "rape, ******, ******, ******" and other words that are considered quite offensive. It's easy to forget that just because you aren't offended by these words, that others are very likely to be. Even if a person hasn't been raped, the target of racism, bullied by homophobes or is mentally disabled, it likely they know someone who has. In the wise words of our admin Matt, "let's talk how we do in person, when someone can reach over the table and grab you by the collar."

The fact that discussions like these are cropping up more frequently tells me that people do care and they do want to change the rude and crude gamer stereotype. I hope that the online gaming community will slowly learn to become more inclusive and understanding, just as the real world is doing the same.

What is your opinion? Do you think this has been a long time coming or that the people concerned about this are a bunch of sissies? Join the discussion! Remember, change starts with you. :)

Thank you! I've been thinking the same thing and it actually means a lot to have Dyrus saying it as well.

As LoL or any online game in for the matter we forget that there are other human people at the end of each name and we might or might not know who are different then us. When people began to use terminology that is offensive it might be because their never told that is wrong. An example of this is another ‘R word’ that I would rather not type due to fact that it deals with mental capability and I for one who has high function Autism find it to be such an insult when it used needlessly by people who either understated what it means and don’t care or by those who do not. This is one thing we as people need to come to understand and talk about, words hurt and yes we get upset or emotion in things and when someone messes up, we get anger at them for no good reason and we let the langue go into things we would never show or say to our own friends and family.

We need to understand we can’t change a person who uses extreme profanity but we can also avoid them.

I for one try to be tolerant until a certain point is reached.
I understand if people are frustrated and curse every now and then and it is ok for me to read those words every once in a while. If you have a bad day and need to vent some air it is ok.
But lately (maybe because I paid more attention and/or try to help the tribunal for LoL) i come across more and more people who show no signs of respect and/or understanding for another person.
Many a day I see people beginning to rage or whine within 5 minutes of the game because something went wrong from their point of view. Makes me sad.

When I play and see those kind of chats I try to get those people to be nicer and understand what is going on with the situation/the person. About 80-90% though I get the response you are talking about, Mowen: I should "stfu" and get asked "u mad bro/brah/******".

Well I will fight on :)

It would be good if it could be toned down but i know that it wont even if celebs do put it down. Kidos to Dyrus btw being a big man there. As long as its through the internet about 4/10 people just dont care who is on the other end. Met them in person who different story. IT would be nice if it stops but as long as people cant keep there temper it wont. If they feel safe behind there computer they wont. To be honest the only bad word i use online apart from the standard ones is f**get but i grew up with that and only say it when they reallly annoy me. i do hope it stops or slows down it would be nice to play a game without all this hate.

Well, I certainly agree with the sentiment that as a whole a sense of togetherness in any community would be better than what the internet, specifically the League community, currently has to offer.

Now, I may come off as calloused at times, and quite frankly that's because I am. Deep down, I'm a big softy, but in this place known as the internet, I can't really afford to be "That guy" anymore.

Too many people don't, and won't ever care, and take full advantage of their essential anonymity and their knowledge that here they can say and do anything they want without any real threat of repercussion. This is a selfish outlook for people to possess, and I wish it would change.

However, my honest and objective analysis is that I just don't have the energy to be the nice guy in a land populated so heavily by jerks. I've tried on several occasions, and at the end of the day I generally end up deciding the same thing. It's just too exhausting to try to be the one that makes the difference.

@ Dufftime: Nothing that is worth having, comes easy.

I think that when more people would actually say something that it might change things a lot. Everyone adds to the whole.

I understand your point though. It is indeed exhausing.

I also like first approaching people I actually know / play with since they're more likely to listen to you. It's a lot easier to say when you're in Skype / Vent instead of arguing over typing while a game is going. I generally am like "I don't know if that word means what you think it means, because if you're using it's true meaning that's quite offensive" etc.

Also, changing your habits even if you don't change others helps too. I think even if you're generally not a trash talker there might be some words you let slip by every once in a while.

I am glad to see people talking about this at all though. People have to realize it's a problem and seeing people agree that something should be done provides the arguement with more credibility.

"Get Raped" is usually said by console players.

I'm generally a pretty good guy online o:

The only time I ever trash talk, is just being silly, I never really seriously insult anyone UNLESS they come and me first, AND they deserve it. Even then, I don't use offensive words, the worst thing I'll usually say is that someone is stupid.

I agree entirely with you though, and it isn't just 'the R word' it's everything! Someone on my team, or even me for that matter could get 4 man ganked lvl 1, or even just make an honest mistake, and immediately the chat fills with 'HOLY F*CKING SH*T THIS RET*RD GETTING FUC*ING RA*ED IN MID, WHAT AN IDIOT NOOB, I HOPE HE DIES!' and then literally, the entire rest of the game, everyone just hates on them for no reason. Every time they die everyone rips on them, every time they do something good, they yell 'KS', or 'YOU'RE LUCKY I HELPED YOU'. They also usually immediately refuse to help you, as soon as you mess up once, they're done with you, and refuse to help you, so you mess up more, and then you get completely blamed for everything, it's ridiculous!

The internet as a whole is a pretty ****py/insensitive place, however, league especially is just aweful. Our community REALLY needs to improve, or this game is just going to spiral to the point of ridiculousness. I've heard of many, many different people who LOVED this game, but quit simply because the community was just too bad, it's a shame really..
