Please Don't Pick All The Same Damage

Went top vs. Ryze. First item Null-Magic Mantle and x2 Health Potion, grabbed First Blood and rushed Wits End. Build to counter your enemy and you will win! This is especially true of top lane.

Or if you're AGAINST a team with all the same damage, please build appropriately! See how I rocked face even though I rushed a Wits End? Note the Leona's Sunfire cape? Yes, that was a bad idea! If the game would've gone on longer the Leona would've paid for buying armor instead of MR!

Play against any competent team and they will be quick to counter your main damage source, and when it's all one type it's a no-brainer. So when you're playing competitively, balance out the damage! ^.^

I feel it's my duty to point out that nobody else on your team built MR.

I just want to say that while this is correct to some extent in a true competetive game, in solo queue you're often better off just picking champions to counter your opponents and win the lane. For example, Guardsman often picks Warwick mid, leaving his team with no real AP carry - but it doesn't usually matter when it allows him to dominate so much.

Plus, damage is simply more effective than armour. Pit a team of tanky champions building all armour items against a team of AD carries building Last Whisper and the ADs will win.

Picking champs to counter is good too. In this instance, I was last pick, so I had to pick an AD carry that can solo, and Graves is a good choice for that.

I will have to disagree with you. Damage is not always better than defenses, especially in top lane where you have no one to help you and you have to stay in lane a long time to get enough exp. You will see Duff do this as well (he's the one that sort of "enlightened" me). He takes a ton of armor runes, builds armor, and I will tell you he always wins his lane because the enemy can't push him out. This tactic works better for some champs than others, but I would always choose defense over damage top.

Your example of pitting a team a tanky champions would result in the tanks winning, not the ad's. Tanks work because they do damage while not needing protection, AD carries build no defenses because they count on their support protecting them. When you're in a solo lane you can't count on anyone helping you.

You have team Xin Zhao, Udyr, Trundle, Rammus, Olaf vs. team Caitlyn, Graves, Vayne, Ashe, Ezreal, I will tell you right now the tanky team will when. Even with last whisper the fact that they have no defenses will make them go down quite easily. Damage is not more effective than armor.

I'm sorry but it just is in the current state of the game. The offence masteries are more powerful than the defence masteries and the offensive items are more powerful than the defensive ones. AD carries can burn through anything in ~10 seconds now - this is the main reason that full tank champions are no longer viable.

Counterbuilding works in solo top (and as the jungler) because you're playing as a tanky champion vs a tanky champion and resists are more effective than damage early in the game. Even with 300 armour and 4000 health a competant AD carry will nuke you down in around 10 seconds assuming your team isn't a long way ahead.

That's why you take a champion that can deal a fairly good amount of damage without buying many damage items and has some CC - so that you actually have some chance of killing them in those 10 seconds if your team helps.

Everything in the game essentially revolves around AD carries. Offtanks and AP will always primarily target the AD carry while trying to protect their own. Supports are the ultimate example of this. Teamfights basically revolve around which team's AD carry can live the longest and put their damage onto the best target.
