Introduction

Hello people! Welcome to my first guide on MobaFire :D This guide is about Aatrox, The Darkin Blade. Aatrox is a melee ad carry that uses health to cast abilities. To counter this, His W, Blood Thirst / Blood Price, heals him when Blood Thirst is active. This heal heals 200% more when Aatrox is under half health. Aatrox has tons of sustain in any stage of the game. Thats what makes him fun. Anyways, welcome to my first guide and I hope you enjoy this :D Here is the champion spotlight of Aatrox by Riot to inform you about Aatrox!

  • Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage: Attack damage is something that any AD melee carry needs the most. Without attack damage, your auto attack will do nothing for the enemy. Which really sucks...
    BLACK
  • Greater Mark of Attack Speed: Aatrox deal more damage with more attack speed. His W [blood thirst / blood price] also deals/heals more the more attack speed you have because it only heals/deals damage every third attack you deal.

  • Greater Mark of Attack Damage: Attack damage is something that any AD melee carry needs the most. Without attack damage, your auto attack will do nothing for the enemy. Which really sucks...
    BLACK
  • Greater Seal of Armor: Aatrox is naked so he needs some cloths! Buy some armor! Armor protects you and people deal less physical attack damage! Best thing on the world for Aatrox :D
    BLACK
  • Greater Glyph of Magic Resist: Magic resist counter all of the AP carrys. They deal less damage to you. Magic Resist is very important in term of defense.

Skill Sequence/Explanation

Blood well: Whenever Aatrox uses an ability that costs health, he stores 100% of the health cost into his Blood Well. The maximum amount of health the Blood Well can store is equal to 30 + (45 x level). If Aatrox has not dealt or received damage in the last 5 seconds, his Blood Well will deplete at a rate of 2% per second.

Upon taking fatal damage, Blood Well activates and places Aatrox in stasis for 3 seconds. Over the stasis duration the Blood Well is emptied and Aatrox restores health equal to its contents plus 10.5 + (15.75 x level). Blood Well's activation has a static cooldown and is unaffected by cooldown reduction.

Also, Aatrox passively increases his attack speed by 1% for every 2% in the Blood Well.

Dark flight: Aatrox takes flight and slams down at a targeted location, dealing 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+ 60% bonus AD) physical damage in a large area. Enemies in the center of the blast are also knocked up for 1 second.

You're going to want to max out [Dark flight] last

Tips and Tricks
  • Use this ability to start a fight or to escape
  • Never use this to farm if you don't see any enemy on the map
  • Wave clear :D

Blood thirst / Blood price: TOGGLE OFF: Aatrox heals himself for 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 (+25% bonus AD) on every third attack. If Aatrox is below 50% health he will heal for three times as much (60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120(+75% bonus AD)).

TOGGLE ON: Aatrox deals 60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 200 (+100% bonus AD) bonus physical damage on every third attack at the cost of 15 / 23.75 / 32.5 / 41.25 / 50 (+25% bonus AD) health.

You're going to want to max out [Blood thirst / Blood Price] before anything

Tips and Tricks
  • Use blood thirst when you are low
  • Use blood price when you are full HP
  • Blood thirst heals 200% more when you are below 50% HP

Blades of torment: Aatrox unleashes and sends forward the power of his blade, dealing 75 / 120 / 165 / 210 / 255 (+ 60% AP) (+ 60% bonus AD) magic damage to enemies in a line and slowing them by 40% for a 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 / 2.75 seconds.

You're going to want to max out [Blades of torment] after [Blood Thirst / Blood Price].

Tips and Tricks
  • The slow is harder to land the further it travels
  • Use this after Dark flight since it's easier to land
  • Use this to slow your enemy

Massacre: Aatrox draws in the blood of his foes, dealing 200 / 300 / 400 (+ 100% AP) magic damage to nearby enemy champions.

For the next 12 seconds, Aatrox's gains 40 / 50 / 60% bonus attack speed and 175 bonus attack range (325 total range). He is still considered melee for item purposes.

Like every ultimate, you are going to put a point into Massacre when you can.

Tips and Tricks
  • This ability scales with AP [NO AP Aatrox!!! JUST NO!]
  • Use this in a team fight because it is an AoE skill.
  • This ability gnus grants Aatrox bonus attack speed and range

Items

Item Sequence

Blade of the Ruined King 3200
Black Cleaver 3000
Sunfire Aegis 2700
Spirit Visage 2900
Frozen Mallet 3100
Enchantment: Furor 450

Attack damage, life steal, and attack speed are the 3 most important stat on Aatrox. With the meta right now, every single ADC and bruiser buys Blade of the Ruined King.

Black Cleaver allows Aatrox to rip his enemys down. It also gives Aatrox some HP he needs.

Frozen Mallet gives lots of HP and 30 attack damage. It's passive is perfect for chasing. Slows an enemy on a basic attack. A must buy on Aatrox in my opinion.

Sunfire Aegis is really great on every bruiser. It deals AoE magic damage around you every second and it gives you extra HP and armor.

Spirit Visage, an defensive item. It increases self-healing and gives HP and MR. Great buy because Aatrox has tons of life steal :D

Enchantment: Furor is really important on Aatrox because Aatrox has a lot of attack speed. Aatrox benefits the most from this enchantment.

Summoner Spells

Great Summoner Spells

Flash: I personally can't live without this spell. But sometimes, I replace it with teleport when I'm playing pre-made.

Ignite: This spell is just like Teemo's poison. Except it is true damage. Use this to finish off your enemy

Teleport: I use this when playing pre-made matches. Having a Zac on the team will be really helpful.

OK Summoner Spells

Ghost: This spell increases your movement speed. Not that great in late game. But still OK.

Exhaust: Makes a champion useless. Great in 1 vs 1. But Aatrox doesn't need it.

Heal: Heals you. However, Aatrox has Blood Thirst. So you won't need heal.

Smite: Take this ONLY when you are a jungler. If you are not. Don't take this spell.

Barrier: Gives you a 2 seconds shield. Great when you are being focused.

Cleanse: Removes any CC that are applied to you. Great when you are locked down by CC.

Troll Summoner Spells

Clarity: You don't use mana as Aatrox. So why do you even think about taking this?

Revive: Take this if you want to get a 10000000 reports and a 5 year ban.

Clairvoyance: Grants vision for a small area. You are not a support. Don't take this.

Lane Match Up A-H

Difficulty : 5/10

A common mirror lane since Aatrox's release. Who wins depends on who knows Aatrox better. Call your jungler for an early gank so that you can be ahead of him.
  • Buy life steals earlier than him so your sustain is increased.
  • When he uses Dark Flight on you, use your Dark Flight on the spot that he used his. This is because he can't deal damage and knock you up while you can deal damage and knock him up.

Difficulty : 3-7/10

Akali can pwn Aatrox hard if she gets the first blood before level 6. Akali is a champion that can snowball pretty easily. Call for a gank before she is level 6 or before she gets first blood.

Difficulty : 4/10

Cho'Gath is really easy to play against in my opinion. Dodge his Rupture to not let him do his combo. His abilities is useless to you except for his Rupture. Dodge it with Dark Flight all day :D
  • If Cho'Gath comes for you before level 6, there is a great chance of getting ganked. Buy alot of wards. Cho'Gath is really good at setting up ganks.
  • Don't fight him if your Blood Well isn't up. Early - Mid game Aatrox can be bursted down by Cho'Gath pretty easily. Buy Hexdrinker and some magic resist because Cho'Gath can poke you more than you poke him.

Difficulty : 2/10

Darius is somewhat hard to play against. Keep forcing Darius out of the minion wave so that he can't hit level 6, never let him get any farm. His passive hurts alot so be careful. Call for an early gank.

Difficulty : 7/10

Top lane Diana would most likely to max her shield, Pale Cascade, first. This makes Diana a perfect counter to Aatrox. Diana's also deals damage and refreshes. Her kit is just too good for Aatrox.
  • If you can, tell your team to camp top side bush for the first blood. That way, when Diana comes back to lane, you will be level 2 or 3 already while she is only level 1.
  • When Diana uses Pale Cascade to farm, wait until the shield is gone then fight her. Remember, use Blood Thirst when fighting face to face and use Blood Price when chasing.

Difficulty : 6/10

Elise has a very strong poke ability. She can poke you anytime. She can also transform into a spider to use her other ability. She excels at both role as a mage or a fighter. Make sure to dodge her Cocoon so that you can fight with her with your full power.
  • Fight with Elisewhen she misses her Cocoon. That way, she will have no CC to stop you from healing and dealing damage.
  • Try to fight her without any minions on your side, she can easily juke you with her Rappel.

Difficulty : 6/10

Fiora has a better early game due to her Riposte and Burst of Speed, however, she falls off mid game because your Blood Thirst / Blood Price is maxed.
  • Try not to 1v1 Fiora when she has her Blade Waltz up and you don't have your passive, Blade Waltz deals crazy single target damage MAX SINGLE-TARGET DAMAGE: 320 / 660 / 1000 (+ 240% bonus AD), So wait for your Blood Well to come back up, then fight her
  • Bait her to use Burst of Speed, wait it to end, then fight her.

Difficulty : 5/10

Gangplank is a really pokey champion early game with his passive Grog Soaked Blade and his Q Parrrley. He also can win melee fight with Aatrox early somehow because of his OP ORANGES and his E,
  • Sustain his pokes by using Blood Thirst on minions. Engage on him when he has no mana to eat his oranges. Why? because oranges removes CC, and his Raise Morale gives him a passive speed buff, which made him impossible to chase without your slow from Blades of Torment
  • Back off when Gangplank becomes aggressive because he can't win you after level 4. Possible ganks incoming when he trys to fight you.

Difficulty : 7/10

Garen is a very tanky top laner. He also has tons of sustain due to his passive, Perseverance. You can not trade with him until mid - late game. Garen = SPIN TO WIN
  • Farm under turrets, if you pick a fight with Garen, he will just Q + SPIN + Ult you. If you have your Blood Well up, feel free to take a risk to trade or kill him.
  • Don't mess with Garen, he will DEMACIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA you down like what he does everytime to Soraka.

Lane Match Up I-Q

Difficulty : 5/10

Irelia is not a counter to Aatrox however she still can beat Aatrox due to her +HP per hit passive and has a stunn. Irelia will try not to pick fights before she is lvl 4.
  • Aatrox has the advantage of revive, however, Irelia has the advantage of stunn and true damage. This is a skill match up!
  • Do not fight with Irelia unless you are sure that you will get that kill, high risk, high reward.

Difficulty : 9/10

Jax is a counter to most top laners who does damage with basic attacks such as Master Yi, Fiora, and of course. Aatrox. The main reason why Jax counters them is because of his Counter Strike, he can dodge your basic attacks while doing damage to you.
  • Bait his Counter Strike by jumping on Jax then simply leaves. If he Leap Strike to you, his dodge might only have a 1 sec duration left. Simply fight with him.
  • Jax's damage is way different between pre 6 and post 6. If you can, try to deny his farm, don't take risk, because he can easily kill you.

Warding

Warding is every important because it gives you great map awareness and helps you to escape ganks. Even though you are not a support or Lee Sin, warding is important. Always buy atleast 1 ward every time you back to base. Ward in the bush as much as possible because you never know whats in it.

Below is a warding map that I made by myself. The map key is below the map.

Green = Sight ward sight ward
Red = Vision ward

DO NOT ward before 3 minute, unless the enemy team jungler is fast junglers like Shyvana or Udyr. Think about camping their red and take first blood if their jungler is low sustain junglers like Evelynn. Take a look at Hahano's guide about junglers! It really helps you if you are a laner OR a jungler.
