Introduction

Hey! Welcome to my very first Lux guide! My name is Dino and I love playing Lux as a champion. I have been playing her since season 3 when I first joined.

Now, If you're interested in picking up Lux, feel free to read the guide. Remember to give it a ♡ thumbs up ♡, if you like it. Also, don't think that if you just read this guide, you will get be legendary all the time, nope. So let's get a move on!

Abilities

Illumination [Passive]
Lux's offensive abilities mark all affected enemies with light energy for 6 seconds. Her basic attacks and Final Spark. Final Spark consume the mark.

Range: 550
Damage: 18 - 190 (based on level)
Scaling: 20% AP


Tips

This passive is useful for poking during laning phase. It may even make a difference, if the enemy lives or not.

Always try to proc Illumination if you can.

Things to take note of


Illumination is a debuff that is triggered on-hit or by Final Spark.

Do not get baited just because you need to proc Illumination. Only do so if you are 100% sure it is worth.



Light Binding [Active]
Lux releases a sphere of light in a line that deals magic damage to the first two enemies hit and roots them for 2 seconds.

Range: 1000
Damage: 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 / 250
Scaling: 70% AP
Costs: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 Mana
Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11


Tips

What makes Light Binding special is that you can snare two people at once. Neat huh? So take advantage of enemies who are hiding behind minions!

This skill is the start of your amazing combo.

Try to use Light Binding in a bush to hit unsuspecting enemies more accurately.

Things to take note of

If you miss Light Binding, back off immediately. Because this is when you are at your most vulnerable.

The duration of the bind is 2 seconds.

It is a projectile.

Enemies can still use their spells while snared.



Prismatic Barrier [Active] [Shield]
Lux shields herself and throws out her wand in a line, shielding allied champions in its path for 3 seconds. Lux's wand then returns to her, stacking the shield to all allied champions it passes through and herself.

Range: 1000
Total Shield Amount: 100 / 130 / 160 / 190 / 220
Scaling: 20% AP
Costs: 60 Mana
Cooldown: 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10


Tips

Throw out your Prismatic Barrier on your allies during a teamfight.

Throw it out when trying to proc Illumination while poking.

Walk towards the direction of your Prismatic Barrier to have 2 shields faster.

Things to take note of

Use it whenever you can to avoid taking damage.

Prismatic Barrier stacks now.

It is similar to Sivir's Boomerang Blade.

It is a projectile.



Lucent Singularity [Active] [AOE]
Lux sends an anomaly of twisted light to the target area, slowing nearby enemies and granting sight of the area around it for up to 5 seconds.

At the end of the duration or if Lucent Singularity is activated again, the singularity detonates, dealing magic damage to all enemies in the area.


Range: 350-1110
Damage/Slow: 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240 ~ 20 / 24 / 28 / 32 / 36%
Scaling: 60% AP
Costs: 70 / 85 / 100 / 115 / 130 Mana
Cooldown: 10


Tips

Lucent Singularity provides vision. So, use it to check bushes for enemies.

Take advantage of it's huge range and use it to poke during laning phase.

Since this skill has a slow, you can prevent an enemy from escaping easily by not detonating it until he/she is about to leave the area or try to land your binding while your enemy is slowed.

Also, if you are running away, do not detonate it. Simply just leave it behind you and enemies chasing will be slowed.

Things to take note of

It's good at zoning enemies.

Use Lucent Singularity to poke only when it's level 2. Level 1 Lucent Singularity isn't all that mighty.

To poke, you might wanna Lucent Singularity(do not detonate yet) and then auto attack. While your auto attack is flying through the air mid-way, detonate your Lucent Singularity to proc Illumination.

It is a projectile.



Final Spark [Active] [Ultimate]
After gathering energy for 0.5 seconds, Lux fires a giant laser in a line that deals magic damage to all enemies hit and briefly reveals them and the surrounding area.

Range: 3000
Damage: 300 / 400 / 500
Scaling: 70% AP
Costs: 100 Mana
Cooldown: 80 / 65 / 50


Tips

By late game, it should have a fairly short cool-down about 30~35 seconds. Do not be afraid to use it on minions.

By casting Final Spark on where the enemy is heading, you have a higher chance of hitting your target.

She cannot be interrupted while casting Final Spark.

Try to snipe Dragon or Baron Nashor if you have no other choice.


Things to take note of

It relights Illumination.

She cannot cast any other abilities or actives while channeling Final Spark.

It is not a projectile.

Itemization






Lost Chapter
Restores 20% of your maximum mana over 3 seconds upon leveling.

Stats:
+300 Mana
+ 25 AP
Cost: 900g

This item provides mana-hungry mages like Lux, Ziggs, Ahri mana to stay in lane longer! You would need to get it after your first back. This item is just amazing after the rework of Morellonomicon.



Morellonomicon
Kills and assists restore 20% of your maximum mana.

Unique: Dealing magic damage to an enemy champion below 35% health inflicts Grievous Wounds to them for 8 seconds.


Stats:
+400 Mana
+ 100 AP
Cost: 2900g

The passive is really useful. 20% Mana can be the difference between life and death. And grevious wounds to prevent those AD-Carries from life-stealing too hard.



Zhonya's Hourglass
UNIQUE – STASIS: Put yourself in Stasis for 2.5 seconds, rendering yourself untargetable and invulnerable for the duration, but also unable to move, attack, cast spells, or use items during this time. 120 second cooldown.

Stats:
+ 45 Armor
+ 70 AP
+ 10% cooldown reduction

This item is literally the counter to all sorts of bursts. Be it from mages or AD-carries. Getting this item can shift the focus of damage on you to your allies. This item is definitely a must get.



Rabadon's Deathcap
UNIQUE: +35% ability power

Stats:
+ 120 AP
Cost: 3800g

Definitely a must for all mages. It increases your AP by so much. Get it after your 3rd or 4th item. I don't think there's a need for explanation for this one.



Sorcerer's Shoes
UNIQUE – ENHANCED MOVEMENT: +45 flat movement speed


Stats:
+ 15 Magic Penetration
Cost: 1100g

Standard boots for Lux. More movement speed, more damage and do not take Ionian Boots of Lucidity! Because you would have enough cooldown reduction when late game happens.



Void Staff
UNIQUE: Magic damage ignores 35% of the target's magic resist (applies before magic penetration).

Stats:
+ 80 AP
Cost: 2650g

Void Staff is for enemies who build Magic Resist. For example, tanks, AD-carries, supports. It makes them less tanky for you so yeah.



Lich Bane
UNIQUE – SPELLBLADE: After using an ability, your next basic attack (on-hit) deals 75% base attack damage and 50% ability power as bonus magic damage. (1.5 second cooldown)

Stats:
+ 7% movement speed
+ 250 Mana
+ 80 AP
+ 10% cooldown reduction
Cost: 3200g

Lich Bane is a not so great choice item for Lux. Even though the damage scales far better than Luden's Echo late game.

However, having Lich Bane means that it requires you to go up close and auto attack enemies. It's risky but if you do take Lich Bane and you are trying to auto-attack and an assassin targets you, use Zhonya's Hourglass



Luden's Echo
UNIQUE – ECHO: Gains charges upon moving or casting. At 100 charges, the next instance of ability damage you deal will expend all charges to deal 100 (+ 10% AP) bonus magic damage to the first enemy hit and summon up to 3 lesser bolts that target nearby enemies, prioritizing enemies damaged by the ability and champions over minions.

Stats:
+ 10% movement speed
+ 100 AP
Cost: 3200g

As I have said earlier, Lich Bane is a fine choice for lategame. However, if you prefer Luden's Echo, go ahead and take it. It must be bought in the earlier stages of the game to maximise it's extra damage.

Sometimes I like to switch between Luden's Echo and Lich Bane depending on the types of enemy.



Abyssal Scepter
UNIQUE: Reduces the magic resist of nearby enemy champions by 10 - 25 (based on level) (700 range).

Stats:
+ 60 magic resist
+ 60 AP
+ 10% cooldown reduction
Cost: 2750g

The aura has a range of 700 and Lux ability ranges are around 800~1000. Could be one of Lux's items but there are much better items suited for her. Only take this if you're really desperate and there's 5 AP on the enemy team.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter
UNIQUE – ICY: Damaging abilities slow affected units based on their type:
Single Target: Slow 40% for 1.5 seconds.
Area of Effect: Slow 40% for 1 second.
Damage over Time, Multi-Hit and Pet attacks: Slow 20% for 1 second.

Stats:
+ 400 health
+ 100 AP
Cost: 3200g

Don't even consider getting this item. Why? Because if you Light Binding an enemy, the slow would be useless. And all of your skills are instant, AOE. 3200g isn't worth the 1 second of slow.

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration

Commonly asked questions:
"Why take Greater Mark of Magic Penetration over Greater Mark of Ability Power?"

Ans: Well, Marks just gives a really bad AP value.

0.59 x 9 = 5.31 flat ability power
0.89 x 9 = 7.83 flat magic penetration

Greater Seal of Scaling Health

Commonly asked questions:
"Can I take Greater Seal of Health instead?"

Ans: Yes you can, but as the game goes on, Greater Seal of Scaling Health will outscale Greater Seal of Health which can help you survive a burst from Zed or any other assassins.

If you're not feeling confident, I suggest taking Greater Seal of Armor against AD-mids.

8 x 9 = 72 flat health
23.94 (at level 18) x 9 = 215.46 extra health at level 18

Greater Glyph of Ability Power

Commonly asked questions:
"Can I take Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power instead?"

Ans: I do not recommend doing so, because Greater Glyph of Ability Power is actually better than Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power.

1.2 X 9 = 10.8 flat AP
3.06 x 9 = 27.54 Scaling AP

Or you could take Greater Glyph of Magic Resist x9 if you're not feeling confident.

Greater Quintessence of Ability Power

Commonly asked questions:
"Why not Greater Quintessence of Scaling Ability Power?"

Ans: Greater Quintessence of Scaling Ability Power isn't good because we need some early game damage!

4.95 x 3 = 14.85 flat AP
7.74 x 3 = 23.22 (scaling ap, at level 18)

Masteries




Cunning



Savagery

Single target attacks and spells deals 5 bonus damage to minions and monsters.

Why?

I prefer this over Wanderer because it allows me to farm better during laning phase.



Secret Stash

Your potions and elixirs last 10% longer. Your health potions are replaced with biscuits that restore 15 health and mana instantly on use.

Why?

Runic Affinity isn't good for Lux because every game you wouldn't always have a blue-buff. Not Assassin either because you are a mage. Therefore, Secret Stash is the way to go, for longer sustain.



Merciless

Deal 5% increased damage to champions below 40% health.

Why?

Merciless 's 5% is crucial for taking down enemies. Do not underestimate it's potential.
Not Meditation because you already have Morellonomicon.



Danger

Champion kills & assists restore 5% of your missing health and mana.

Why?

Dangerous Game 's 5% can help you survive an ignite. Do not underestimate it's potential. And also, Bandit are for supports.




TL's D

Your third attack/spell against an enemy calls down a lightning strike. Dealing magic damage in the area.

Why?

You are a mage. Getting Thunderlord's Decree means more burst.




Ferocity



Sorcery

2.0% increased ability power

Why?

The extra 5% damage is better than Fury which gives attack speed. It isn't quite the mastery for Lux...



Feast

Killing a unit +20 health (every 30 seconds)

Why?

Well, this 20 health gives you the extra bit of health of sustain you need during laning phase every 30 seconds. And I prefer Feast over Double-Edged Sword because personally, I don't like the idea of 1.5% additional damage.



Natural Talent

Gain 2 + 0.44 Attack Damage and 3 + 0.67 Ability Power per level

Why?

Vampirism offers spell-vamp but you are AOE. Hence, it is reduced to 1/3 healing. That's why Natural Talent is preferred.



Bounty Hunter

Deal 1% increased damage to each unique champion you have killed.

Why?

Around late-game, you should have around 3~5% increased damage. On the other hand, Oppressor gives only 2.5%.


How to play lux

Laning Phase



Warding
X are the areas where you should ward to avoid getting ganked. Warding can help save a life~

Auto-attack will represent AA
Illumination means to AA proc it.
= easy af
= takes awhile

Light Binding > Illumination > Lucent Singularity > Illumination

Combo difficulty:
This is an effective way to poke PRE-6 because it hurts.
POST-6, do not do this unless you are very sure that the enemy won't burst the heck out of you after the snare duration is over.


Full Combo (Post-6 to late game)



This might look confusing at first so now, I'll tell you the order of the skills.

Light Binding > Lucent Singularity (don't explode it yet) > Final Spark > Lucent Singularity (explode!)
Combo difficulty:
Smart-casting makes this combo easier to execute.
Make sure Light Binding hits first before going 100-0.
If you can't get it right away, relax. It will come naturally with more practice.
Remember to explode Final Spark and Lucent Singularity at the same time.
