Introduction

Hello, I am Allvarreth a Sion main since season 2. This guide will walk you through the Sion play style I have found to be the most fun and successful. Some people may be wondering what happened to my guide, as it was previously a guide for AP Sion. The sad truth is that after the big changes made to sion and some reflection, I experimented a bunch and AP Sion just isn't as optimal as it once was. My AP builds are still on here if you want to use them but the guide now revolves around my new tankier build. I hope the guide helps you play Sion successfully, as he is a champ who is both fun and powerful. If this guide helped you I would appreciate if you up voted and gave some feedback.

Item Explanations

Items

Swiftys are really good boots in general. They help with roaming and ganks and give Sion lots of much needed move speed and slow resist

Sorcerer's shoes are my favourite boots on Top/Mid Sion right now. Build the m and you will chunk. Sorc boots synergize really well with sunfire cape and liandry's

Zz'rot portal is one of my favourite items. I rush it in most games because it gives great armor and magic resist and just pushes so well.

This item is core on Sion. It gives a nice amount of armor and health with a passive that serves both as a decent source of damage and as a lane pushing item. The aura is amazing in team fights and deals more damage then you would think.

Face of the Mountain Really good item on Sion that can actually be taken outside of support if you want. It's decent for taxing in the jungle and provides a second shield and 40% slow.

Banner of Command is a great pick for magic resist because even though it only gives you 35 MR, you win by being a team player so mr to your team is great. The stat spread isn't bad and the active is great and helps you push.

Locket of the Iron Solari is what I like to call the poor man's Banner of Command. I personally prefer Banner in most situations because of it's active, but if your team is really behind take Locket because it gives a little more health and has a defensive active.

A great item that supports AP members of your team while countering AP members of the other team. It's a really good offensive pick that I normally take when I'm on team, relying on magic damage.

Pretty much the AD counterpart of Banner/Locket. Amazing stats and a great passive for teamfights. One member of the team should have this.

Thornmail is the ultimate anti ADC Item. Not only does povide an insane amount of armor, it also gives you great damage with the thorns effect. Take this when ADCs or other AD enemies are a big threat.

Dead man's plate gives the same nice stats that sunfire gives but the passive is more focused around mobility and gap closing. It's good item to take to help your engages.

Liandry's torment is probably the best item you can buy for damage, with ap magic pen and an amazing effect. I generally take this when my team needs extra damage to kill tanks.

If you're a support BUY A SIGHTSTONE. Warding is essential. That's all there really is to it

Skill Explanations

Glory in Death: Glory in Death is, in my opinion, not the best passive. The reason being its very easy to out run so you normally will only get about 1 or 2 AAs off. But if the enemy is CCed or extremely low this can get you a kill or two.

Decimating Smash: Decimating smash is an amazing CC ability but can be very hard to use as it requires a minimum 1 sec charge to CC. the ability is nice for CCing but won't do much damage as it scales off AD. While in the jungle this skill is great for camp clear.

You're going to want to max out [Decimating Smash] last as jungle, top or mid, but first as support.
Tips and Tricks
  • While you are out of their vision, enemies cannot see the area of Decimating Smash. Use this to your advantage to surprise stun people.
  • A slow is better then nothing. If an enemy is clearly going to escape don't try and get the knock up, end it early for small damage and a slow

Soul Furnace: Soul Furnace is a huge shield that is also your main source of damage late game. This ability is extremely useful as, when used properly, blocks a large amount of damage while still giving you great AOE burst. It also has a passive health gain per kill on a unit that makes Sion naturally tankier without building as many tank items. In the jungle this ability is great as it a prevents a lot of damage from camps, drastically improving your camp clear.

You're going to want to max out [Soul Furnace] first as jungle and second as top, mid, or support

Tips and Tricks
  • Soul Furnace can be cast while charging Decimating Smash or During Unstoppable Onslaught. Use this to better time your shield detonation, increasing your damage output.
  • You can cast Soul Furnace in the middle of a team fight then activate Zhonya's preventing you from taking damage thus guaranteeing the Shield's detonation
  • Soul Furnace can only be detonated 2+ seconds after being activated. Because of this you should activate it right before a gank rather than right when you start the gank.

Roar of the Slayer: Roar of the Slayer is Sion's bread and butter ability and your main source of damage early on. The projectile provides great damage, a nice slow and when you launch a minion with it, it will chunk. The slow is very useful for setting up your Q and catching up with people to detonate your W. This ability is not quite as good for camp clear as the other two so you should take it last when jungling, but still max it before the others.

You're going to want to max out [Roar of the Slayer] second as jungle, first as top or mid and last as support

Tips and Tricks
  • The initial projectile on Roar of the Slayer can travel through terrain, but minions launched by it cannot. Be aware of this so you know when you can and can't hit somebody
  • Roar of the Slayer has much better range and damage when you launch a minion with it. Take advantage of this by positioning yourself to shoot minions into your enemy when ganking.

Unstoppable Onslaught: Sion's ultimate is Unstoppable Onslaught. Although hard to aim, is a great source of damage and CC and his best method of ganking. Although it is an AD ability, the high base damage which scales with the amount of time spent in your ult, can make it quite damaging. The main feature of this ability is the large AOE knockup/stun. This is amazing and can allow you to out duel many people, turn around team fights, and makes for extremely effective ganks.

Ult Tricks

Sion's ultimate can do some very useful tricks to it that, while somewhat hard to execute, are very useful. Things like certain paths that get you to objectives easily or bouncing yourself off a wall while ulting. Below are some videos on how to do these things.

Laning Phase

In lane you may be tempted to sit around farm, especially since you get those nice Soul Furnace stacks that increase your HP. While you want to maintain a decent farm, you should be roaming A LOT. If you're mid you are free to roam to bot or top. Go to the lane that needs or has potential for a kill. When you're top roaming isn't as easy. Try to roam mid when you can and use some of your teleports to try and help out bottom lane. When you're in your own lane you can farm and push lane easily with all your AoE damage and Roar of the Slayer provides awesome poke.
