Aatrox, Powerful and Speedy
Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
This is my first guide. Please bear with me.
Though he just came out, Aatrox is already a powerful top laner. All in all, he is one of the best characters I have seen so far. He will be nerfed, especially his W, but so far, I see alot of promise.
My favorite runes are AD runes on him. 9 greater seal of healths, 9 greater glyphs of attack speed, 9 marks of armor penetration, and 3 quintessence of scaling attack damage. This gives extra sustainability via the health, and keeps him damage at a high.
With the runes, a 21/9/0 mastery page is best. Maxing out his damage is key, since the W keeps his health high and uses some of his AD to add to it. Some say 9/21/0, and this also works, giving him a tanky feel, but to me, Aatrox should be an offensive push, which turns into an assassin later game, killing the carries too quickly for them to do damage, so I avoid too tanky.
To start, go boots and pots, especially since the latest change gave you an extra pot with the boots. After that, rush either Blade of the Ruined King or Bloodthirster, preferably the first. Though Bloodthirster is better for power purposes, we want the attack speed early. After that, go Phage. It'll keep the enemies slowed once you hit them after your E allows you to catch them. I go Spirit Visage next, keeping the W at max. I also go Ionian Boots, to keep your passive going. Finishing it off is both Atma's Impaler and Zephyr.
I am a tad different. Levels one two and three should be, in this order, W, Q, E. Afterwards, max W, like usual, but your second focus should be Q. By using this right, ambushing and team fights are a lot smoother, given the pop-up range. It's like a mini version of Malphite's R. In addition, it puts you in a perfect spot to hit the team with your R, and the combo should nearly end almost any carry early on, which with both your E and your added range, should end the carries. It also lets you escape on a moments notice, breaking from the ones who are hurting you too much. It's potential is really good, too good to have it maxed last.
So the order is:
W, Q, E, W, W, R, W, Q, W, Q, R, Q, Q, E, E, R, E, E.
There are many choices of spells. Two of the best are Ignite and Exhaust, but on Aatrox, Exhaust isn't really that great. With Phage and his E, enemies aren't running easily. Ignite, on the other hand, is a great option, minimizing healing and doing damage. Flash is a must, especially if Q is on cooldown. Some early on may go Heal, for sustain purposes, which is fine if that's your deal, but honestly, Ignite and Flash is all I think anyone would need.
All in all, Aatrox is now one of my favorite champions. And though I chose to remain anonymous, I hope others like my version of Aatrox. Have fun, and may The Fields of Justice bring you glory!
