Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
I'm EvilMonkey722, and this is my first guide ever. Because I'm still learning how to code and setup a guide, and that will take a while, use this is mostly as just a build guide. Please bear with me. I just want to point out that I am by no means a pro at this game. I'm just a guy who has had decent success with Aatrox so far and decided to make this since I have seen too many people fail with him. I like Aatrox a lot, because of his sustain and damage output. However, since I'm pretty confident he'll receive a nerf at some point, I'll try to update this after any changes. Also, I will be expanding this guide whenever possible, especially in the unlikely event that this gets more popular.
Thanks for looking at my guide and if you have any questions or comments, I'll respond as soon as I can.
Aatrox, The Darkin Blade
Aatrox is a melee fighter who, I think, is best suited for solo top lane. Some people have tried him in the jungle, I have not. But from what I have seen, he can fall off pretty hard late game.
Aatrox is a legendary warrior, one of only five that remain of an ancient race known as the Darkin. He wields his massive blade with grace and poise, slicing through legions in a style that is hypnotic to behold. With each foe felled, Aatrox's seemingly living blade drinks in their blood, empowering him and fueling his brutal, elegant campaign of slaughter.
The earliest tale of Aatrox is as old as recorded history. It tells of a war between two great factions remembered only as the Protectorate and the Magelords. Over time, the Magelords won a series of crushing victories, leaving them on the brink of obliterating their sworn enemy forever. On the day of their final confrontation, the Protectorate army found themselves outnumbered, exhausted, and poorly equipped. They braced for inevitable defeat.
Just when all hope seemed lost, Aatrox appeared among the ranks of the Protectorate. With but a few words, he urged the soldiers to fight to the last before throwing himself into battle. His presence inspired the desperate warriors. At first, they could only watch in awe as this unknown hero cleaved through their enemies, his body and blade moving in unison as if one being. Soon, the warriors found themselves imbued with a potent thirst for battle. They followed Aatrox into the fray, each fighting with the furious strength of ten until they had won a most unlikely victory.
Aatrox vanished after that battle, but the Protectorate army's newfound fury did not. Their surprising triumph led to many more until they were able to finally return home victorious. Their countrymen hailed them as heroes, but though they had saved their entire civilization from destruction, darkness lingered in the mind of each warrior. Something within them had changed. Over time, their memories of battle faded, only to be replaced with a grim revelation: their acts of heroism were, in fact, brutal atrocities committed by their own hands.
Tales like these appear among the myths of many cultures. If they are all to be believed, Aatrox's presence has changed the course of some of the most important wars in history. Though these stories remember him as a savior in dark times, Aatrox's true legacy may be a world filled with conflict and strife.
"Some fight for honor, some fight for glory. It matters only that you fight."
-A ton of sustain
-Good amount of DPS
-Gap closer with Dark Flight
-Can snowball pretty hard
-Cool passive- Blood Well
-Very susceptible to CC
-Mostly AA reliant
-Can have a slow start sometimes
-Long CD on passive
I use Greater Mark of Scaling Attack Damage, Greater Seal of Armor, Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist, and Greater Quintessence of Scaling Attack Damage.
I think you could probably change the Marks to Greater Mark of Armor Penetration and be alright, that just isn't what I have. I wouldn't change the Seals, Glyphs, or Quints though.
For Aatrox's masteries I like going 9/21/0. He has a good amount of innate damage, so I like to supplement him with a bit more survivability.
Passive- Blood Well Gives a good amount of attack speed when full, and will end up saving your life quite a few times
First ability- Dark Flight Good gap closer, knock-up, decent damage, and has a pretty quick activation. Use to chase/escape, and works well as an initiate.
Second ability- Blood Thirst / Blood Price A heal or damage buff to your 3rd attack. Great sustain/damage output. I max this first for the sustain in lanes and damage fights.
Third ability- Blades of Torment Damage and a slow. A cool ability, however it does magic damage, so your armor doesn't help. I usually just use this as a slow.
Ultimate- Massacre A no cost, AoE damage ability and an attack speed/range steroid. Pretty helpful in team fights, and at level 3 has a low cooldown, so you should be able to use it every team fight.
I haven't figured out how to shrink this yet, so for now it will have to stay like this...
I know it seems like a bad a idea, but trust me, get Blade of the Ruined King first. Boots of Speed can wait until second, because the lifesteal is so much more useful. Then you should get either Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads depending on enemy team. Most of the time go with the Tabi because Spirit Visage gives some MR. Also, Ravenous Hydra could possibly be switched to Zephyr I am currently testing this.
My First Few Games
Here are my first eleven games with Aatrox, but so far this build has worked well for me... if you send me some pictures of your match history using my build I may include them.
This guide has worked well for me so far, and I hope it works for you as well. If you have anything you think should be changed, please leave it in the comments, and I will look into it. Thanks for checking out my guide.
Plans for the Future
I plan to add his match-ups, best pairings, and an FAQ when I find out what they are.
