The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
I slowly came up with this build while trying out Shen during a free week. I have used this build and it has worked highly well as a tank/assassin role.
Teleport - Allows for you to use your ultimate on one side of the map then teleport to any friendly turret for defense or while your ultimate is down you can teleport to a turret to help gank a lane.
Flash - This is mainly for finishing off opponents that are trying to run away with your Q ability. But can also be used to run from the enemy team after saving one of your teammates with your ultimate.
The masteries are just to increase his survivability as a tank while still being able to do some damage with your melee attacks.
The priority if your skills is as follows
R > Q > E > W
Ki Strike - Useful passive that increases damage on your melee attack every 8 seconds. The bonus damage is modified by your health so the more health you got the more damage you are gonna do.
Vorpal Blade - This allows you to farm minions early game while harassing the enemy champs in your lane. This can also be used with your flash to finish off a champ that is running away. The heal also helps with farming and surviving in large team fights.
Feint - This is only useful if you are taking damage from multiple enemy units and you are trying to last long enough for your team to get to you.
Shadow Dash - In my opinion Shen's most important ability. It allows him to taunt every enemy that he crosses allowing you to save teammates or stop enemies from running. Works well when you are close to a turret because it forces the enemy to attack you making your turret target them.
Stand United - Useful for saving teammates if they are getting ganked or to assist a teammate in ganking an enemy. It can also be used to save yourself by targeting a teammate that is across the map.
Basic tank runes to increase survivability throughout the game.
I start off with boots to help with escaping any early game ganks/finishing off enemy champions.
Ninja Tabai - This is good for its armor and dodge because of your defense masteries. It can be replaced with Mercury's Treads if you are worried about casters/crowd control spells.
Warmog's Armor - I try to get this as early as possible in the game because it allows you to bulk up early and continually build up your health as you farm minions and get ganks off. The health works really well with your passive.
Leviathin - This is good if your team is doing well in team fights. If you can get to 20 stacks you should be nearly unkillable. Again, you are stacking up health for your passive and survivability.
Randuin's Omen - Good all around armor/health tank piece. The passive is good for helping your team in team fights or getting away from ganks.
Atma's Impaler - This item is part of the reason you are building up so much health. With only 3000 health you are doing an additional 60 damage per hit.
Force of Nature - This only increases your survivability more with the 40 health/5 seconds and .35% health/second.
The order of these items are purely what is needed at the time. The only thing that I highly recommend is getting Warmog's Armor as soon as possible.
