Master Yi Build
Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
To start off I would like to give you guys a brief summary of the pros and cons of AP yi. You guys might think this is for trolls, but recently I've been having so much fun playing AP yi, and he actually works well.
Very fun to play
CC disrupts his meditate
Minimal DPS after using alpha strike and lich bane
Great farm as well
CC destroys him
As you can see, AP Yi is "better" in my opinion based on the pros and cons i listed above. DPS Yi has nice damage but I find that once you're focused it doesn't matter, you melt anyways. AP Yi has great burst to up to 4 targets and can survive much more easily. Most of all, he is ridiculously fun to play.
The runes I chose are pretty standard and typical.
Mag pen marks - more damage
Dodge seals - greater chance of surviving and getting away
CDR glyphs - lets you spam your skills more since they are on such long cooldowns
Mag pen quin - more damage
you could also get mp regen runes if you like but they got nerfed
you could also get ap runes for a bit more oomph
Masteries & Summoner Spells
I did a 9/0/21 mastery build because he gets cdr, mp regen, movement speed, and buff elongation from utility. He also gets more damage and some more cdr from offense.
*switch the crit chance mastery to exhaust mastery if you're going to take it.
Also you may do a 9/21/0 mastery build if you find yourself too squishy
I suggest 3 resistance, 2 hardiness, 4 evasion, 1 nimbleness, 3 harden skin, 4 veteran's scar, 3 ardor, 1 tenacity.
If you take this mastery build, go with glyphs of celerity instead.
For summoner spells:
Ghost - quick getaway, chasing, even more speed to ur ult
Ignite - Finish off enemies you couldn't with your alpha strike and lich bane
Flash - Surprise nuking and turret diving. Interchange with ghost
Exhaust - Don't let enemies get away, or slow and decrease their damage for a getaway.
Cleanse - Makes you pretty much ungankable with your high speed.
[*] DORAN'S RING A great item to start off with. Gives you AP, mp regen, and HP
[*] SORCERER'S SHOES More mag pen. Nuff said
[*] RABADON'S DEATHCAP This is one of the two major items on AP Yi. It gives him 202 AP by ITSELF. With the rest of your AP items you will become ridiculously strong.
[*] MEJAI'S SOULSTEALER If you're owning face, this is the item to get. More AP and a chance for more CDR? I think so.
[*] LITCH BANE You're second major item. Everything you want is in this item: AP, MP, MRes, Movement speed, AND after your alpha strike you deal your AP as additional damage on your next auto attack.
[*] RYLAI'S CRYSTAL SCEPTER If you find yourself too squishy, get a Rylai's. It gives you AP, HP, and a 4 target slow.
[*] VOID STAFF You're opponents are getting smart and stacking mres since you're too clutch? Get a voidstaff and they'll see what you did thar.
[*] DEATHFIRE GRASP AP, MP regen, CDR, and EVEN MORE BURST! If you don't need the hp from rylai's i definately recommend getting this.
[*] HEXTECH GUNBLADE lifesteal and attack damage and spell vamp = heal a bunch
Mercury's Treads - Too much CC = merc treads (general rule for me is 3 or more CCs)
Ionian Boots of Lucidity - even more CDR, what more can i say.
Frozen Heart - if their team has much dps, you can get this to reduce their attack speed, decrease your cooldowns, and get some armor.
Banshee's Veil - Getting tired of CC? Here you go.
Archangel's Staff - I don't feel this is completely necessary but if you're really running out of mp alot, get it.
Zhonya's Hourglass - If you're having trouble with DPS and you want AP. The stasis might be the 2 seconds you need to pop an alpha strike (:
In this section i'll be putting everything I've said above together and provide you guys with some hints and tips.
Laning partners include supports because well they support you.
Stunners because it lets you dish out more damage and hopefully your alpha strike will be up a second time to finish them off
Taunters for the same reason as stunners
Ranged champs who have good harrass potential lets you own the lane and deny them of gold.
Early Game (lv 1-6)
Get a Doran's ring and head to your lane. During the laning phase you should play a bit defensive because even though you have mp regen you don't want to blow it all on meditate. Using Alpha Strike you can not only farm minions but harrass the enemy champion from a distance.
When the champion approaches closer, and depending on your positioning and which minion you selected, it is possible to predict if your alpha strike will or will not strike the enemy champ along the way. It does take some practice, but once you got it down, you'll see their hp demolished bar by bar.
Once you have enough gold, head back and get a sorcerer's shoes, although if you're confident enough you may stay in the lane.
During midgame, people will probably start ganking. As yi, it is easy to survive these ganks because you have ghost, ult, and meditate. At this time, you should also be getting blue buff as often as you can to reduce cooldown and increase mp regen. If you want to gank you can also get red buff for the slow. Remember, farm farm farm and get that gold you need. After Rabadon's you should be able to dish out almost 500 damage per alpha strike which is actually a ton, especially to squishies. Continue to play in lane/ganking/alpha striking jungle creeps for extra gold. You should be pushing a bit by this point as well.
At this point you SHOULD be king of farm, and you should have your core items. Your burst damage is amazing, and you literally have double your hp since meditate heals 100% of your hp back. In teamfights, your alpha strike hits 4 targets and can take off half the enemies hp. Combined with lich bane, you will literally 2 shot the enemy. All the cooldowns and your ult should be able to let you continuously spam and spam.
Tips and extra hints
Farm, farm, farm. You need it.
Harrass with alpha strike, it's pretty effective.
When you're low on hp and the enemy is chasing you, don't be hesitant to meditate. Most of the time, they'll focus you and pop every spell they have on you. With the armor and mres added, it'll do nothing, and then you can run away.
Occassionally, get a elixer of brilliance for the CDR and extra AP.
Just because you used Alpha strike doesn't mean you can't do anything else. Yi has one of the best base damages in game, combined with his ult and wuju style, he can still pack a punch.
Alpha strike is able to kill off wraiths, wolves, and later double golems in one shot, so use that to your advantage.
Have some fun, take some risks, but don't be ******ed.
