Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Gragas is often seen as a tanky AP caster in mid lane and rightfully so but another very fun and legit way to play him is as an AD offtank!
I hope you enjoy this guide and please let me know in the comments if you did! :)
Why Ad Gragas and why would it work?
Well, to be honest I have a tendency of breaking the Meta game (call me a LoL hipster) and I often try some ridiculous builds on strange champions, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but AD Gragas certainly does!
The reason it works is because Gragas is naturally tanky and can take a beating and his kit, i know that a lot of people will argue, synergies very well with the role of an AD Offtank.
His 'Drunken Rage' skill is ridiculously good for a bruiser and his 'Body Slam' and 'Explosive Cask' give him some serious crowd control, combined with a frozen mallet and almost nobody will be able to escape from you without using a summoner spell.
Happy Hour: Not an amazing passive but pretty good for lane sustain combined with the extra effect from 'Drunken Rage'
Barrel Roll: Actually not that useless on AD Gragas because the attackspeed debuff is good but I would just skip it unless you can't level anything else up, the manacost for the damage is not worth it if you're not going AP
Drunken Rage: This is what makes AD Gragas shine! While it's good on AP gragas it's SO much better on a more bruiser style build. The damage reduction and the insane amount of AD it gives you is amazing! The mana it gives you is always good but nothing special.
The one big downside to this skill is that you have to wait until it's completely channeled (practically stunning you for 1 second) otherwise the skill will be on cooldown without you getting the effect...
Body Slam: Your bread and butter skill as AD Gragas. It can be used offensive or to escape or maybe even something in between! It has a decent Ad ratio so combined with 'Drunken Rage' and any AD you buy you WILL hit like a truck
Explosive Cask: Your main CC in a team fights, save your carry, prevent that guy from escaping, disrupt the enemy team or even killsteal that son of a b*tch teammate who was swearing at you... It has many uses :)
Although it has high base damage don't expect it to do that nuke damage it would do if you would've been AP, it's main use is disruption.
Your Summoner Spells are completely based on your own preference but I like to use Flash and Ignite
I take armor seals, magic resistance glyphs and health quintessences for runes.
I'm not sure yet about the marks, armor pen is OK but sometimes I also use magic pen for extra 'Body Slam' damage early game. I'll try flat AD.
note: I've had success with hybrid penetration marks
Itemization is of course completely up to you and depends on who you're facing or whatever your team needs
But I would strongly recommend building:
- Some cooldown reduction to keep up your 'Drunken Rage' and to spam 'Body Slam' more.
- Sheen and combine it into Trinity Force or Ice Born Gauntlet
- A lot of health!
A good strategy is to play very defensively and suddenly become very aggressive.
Try to 'Body Slam' your enemy while he's isolated for increased damage.
Although you have a pretty solid escape with 'Body Slam' and 'Explosive Cask' + Flash or Ghost, you will still need ward river and the enemy top bush!
I know this is a short guide and not very in depth yet but I will probably expand it later when I have more time.
For now I hope you enjoyed it and good luck Rabble-Rousing!
