The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Welcome to my AD Malzahar guide! My name is DarkyDu, and I'm a Silver 4 summoner in EUW.
Why should I play AD Malzahar?
Very high DPS at all stages of the game.
Often makes enemies rage! (but also teammates!)
People focus you, while the minions deal the damage.
Flexible, strong build path.
Your Minions dance when you do!
Often makes teammates rage! (but also enemies!)
Hard to pull off if you can't manage your passive properly.
Items can be expensive.
Mana problems. (though an early Tear solves this quickly, and if you jungler gives you blue)
Ult known for being buggy + you stun yourself (who wouldn't attack a stunned Malzahar supressing their AD Carry?)
When should I play AD Malzahar?
Assuming you are wondering about team comps, Malzahar is fairly flexible. He can be played AD Top, Mid Jungle or as a weak (but functional!) ADC.
If you are taking him mid, It's best to take him when: you have an Tank/Bruiser top, AP Jungle, AP top and Tank/Bruiser jungle. This ensures you have a nice spread of both kinds of damage, CC and survivability in early fights around buffs. When comparing to Bot, try taking him if you have a Tank Support, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.
If you are taking him Top, swap it round - AP Mid and Tank/Bruiser Jungler makes for a good AD Malz.
If you are Jungling, again - Tank/Bruiser Top, and AP Mid.
As an ADC, don't worry about Team Comp. You'll be fine.
Remember - these are only suggestions. Most of the time AD Malzahar is perfectly legitimate in any situation.
Greater Mark of Lethality
Greater Seal of Armor
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage
Maximizing your damage with Marks and Quints is essential. Armor Pen scales with your minions while the AD gives you a good boost in early game trading.
The Seals and Glyphs are fairly standard - tanky stats to help survive harass and early fights.
Taking 4 points in Sorcery for the 5% CDR is crucial. With Ionian Boots of Lucidity and a The Brutalizer, you now have 30% CDR.
We take a point in Expose Weakness for increased damage with a Support or Jungler. (Or Laner if you're the one jungling!)
3 points in Brute Force gives 10 AD at level 18, a free Long Sword. Handy!
A point in Spell Weaving might seem bad at first - but a good Malzahar autoattacks inbetween spells for increased damage - you ARE AD after all.
The point in Martial Mastery gives some nice free 6 AD.
Blade Weaving is similar to Spell Weaving . I don't know if the Voidlings proc it, but I doubt they do.
3 points in Warlord simply gives increased damage.
Devastating Strikes gives 6% Hybrid Penetration. This is useful as it increases your early damage with spells (which is quite high!), and pumps up your minions in addition.
A final point in Havoc for that good ol' damage.
Phasewalker is okay, you can take Scout if you so desire. Neither impacts too much.
Meditation is very useful - Mana Regen should not be passed up!
3 points into Summoner's Insight grants us lowered Summoner Spell CDs - just all round good.
A point into Alchemist for increased sustain.
Our final point goes to Culinary Master . This makes your pots give extra Health and Mana, great!
Long Sword and 2 Total Biscuit of Rejuvenation make for a good statement - I'm AD Malz, not AP! Also, to not forget the fact the Long Sword builds into nearly every item you want, and it increases your damage.
EARLY-MID GAME INVESTMENTS:
A The Brutalizer gives Armor Pen, AD and CDR, 3 stats Malzahar loves. One of these is essential.
A Tear of the Goddess provides Mana Regen and Mana which stacks with spells cast. As you will be spamming spells, this is a godlike item for you. (geddit?)
If you are Jungling, a Spirit of the Elder Lizard will be useful, as the AD, CDR, True Damage burn (which your minions proc!) and Mana Regen are all used, with the Health Regen and increased damage on Monsters also being useful. I sometimes use this item on laning Malzahar, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Don't forget to
Lastly, an early Hexdrinker can help if against a burst Mage like Lux or Kassadin, but is not so important compared to the other items.
While you can build these in any order, this is the way I would recommend it:
First taking The Black Cleaver for extra damage and Armor Pen and CDR, you also gain some Health, which while minor, will help you.
Then going into a Manamune for the pure AD. It doesn't affect the already gained mana.
I'd recommend a Last Whisper in most games, due to the just supreme Armor Shred you then obtain.
You've got your core. Time to pwn nubs with the insane damage you can get from items like The Bloodthirster, which grants 100 AD when fully stacked, Maw of Malmortius which gives you AD based on your missing Health, and a shield against Magic damage, a Trinity Force for Ton of Damage (tm), or lastly a Youmuu's Ghostblade to literally rip into any Armor.
You deal tons of damage and got your easy penta, but suddenly the entire enemy team is focusing you! WTF? Looks like you're gonna need some tanky items to help survive!
Frozen Mallet gives Health and AD, with a handy passive that helps kite - if your minions proc'ed it, it would be core on AD Malzahar.
A Locket of the Iron Solari is a nice, cost efficient item which gives a bundle of stats. I think it helps your minions, but don't count on me.
Randuin's Omen and Spirit Visage are both good Off-Tank items. They dont serve so well on Malzahar, but they can be useful.
Warmog's Armor is kinda bad. While the health is good, resistances are kind of necessary on Malzahar as well to not be insta-gibbed.
Frozen Heart is sleeper OP on Malzahar. However as it provides no damage stats it loses some wow. The Armor, Mana and CDR are amazing however.
To conclude this section a Guardian Angel is a fantastic purchase when ahead/in late game. Be warned though, if your team can't protect you after the passive is used, you now have a dead Malzahar. If you lose it to a Nidalee Javelin Toss or in a duel, you now have a wasted inventory slot.
9/10 times the Warding Totem comes out top. You can buy the Sweeping Lens, but to little effect.
ODD LITTLE ITEMS:
zeke's herald gives a nice little bonus to your minions and you, as well as a decent amount of CDR.
Banner of Command does the exact same thing in effect. Use them wisely!
As said earlier R>E>W>Q.
When playing Malzahar, most of your spells are wasted in effect. The damage on all of them is not particularly noticable late game, and they simply become CC tools, or to focus your minions.
Your Call of the Void is an AOE Skillshot nuke which can silence the enemy for a short amount of time. Handy if you're getting ganked, or a Fiddlesticks is trying to Crowstorm. The silence is remarkably long, but the damage is very weak. Max this last, but you can max it second to last.
Your Null Zone is an AOE Percentage Damage Dot, which at max rank can deal 40% of the enemy champions health. It is capped on monsters, sorry Jungle Malzahar :(. Take this first on Jungle instead of Q. Max it second to last, or last if you dislike it.
The Malefic Visions (or Space Aids, as the community would have you know) is an DoT debuff, which deals magic damage - but more importantly, it focuses your Voidlings onto them! In addition, if a unit dies with this debuff - Malzahar gets Mana back! Combined with your Summon Voidling, you can clear waves quickly and get back to full Mana instantly! Max this first for the Cooldown and Mana restored.
Your Ultimate, Nether Grasp, is an extremely strong spell. It supresses the enemy for 2.5 seconds, top prioritizing your Voidlings. This spell is great for keeping an enemy down, so your Voidlings will wreck them. Always take a point in this when you can.
Now the whole purpose of AD Malzahar is not his Auto Attacks or his Spells - its his passive, Summon Voidling. Now while on AP Malz they aren't too interesting, they are core to your build and playstyle in this. To quote the game itself:
After casting 4 spells, Malzahar summons an uncontrollable Voidling to engage enemy units for 21 seconds. Voidlings have 200 + (50 x level) Health and 20 + (5 x level) + (1 per bonus attack damage) Attack Damage.
Voidlings Grow after 7 seconds (+50% Attack Damage/Armor), and Frenzy after 14 seconds (+100% Attack Speed).
Now highlighted in orange is the one reason you are playing this. A full AD scaling (and Armor Penetration as well) on your passive allows you to be so strong. When played right, you can have 3 Voidlings, each with about 270 AD and another with almost 400 all attacking an enemy, dealing ridiculous damage. That's insane!
However, you need to cast 4 spells to be able to summon these guys, which is why you need CDR and Mana MORE than AP Malazahar. The style of build is often called an 'AD Caster' and is highly similar to Jayce and kha'zhix.
While you can find better guides for this, I've got a tiny mini guide. Tiny, mini.
Hunter's Machete and 5 Health Potion.
Spirit Stone and Boots of Speed.
Spirit of the Elder Lizard and The Brutalizer and Tear of the Goddess.
The Black Cleaver and Manamune and Ionian Boots of Lucidity.
Lastly Last Whisper and Guardian Angel.
Here are some matches I've had success with. I'll try and update this regularly!
They ended up surrendering.
Soloed Baron! Died the first time, but got it the second!
Legendary on Jungle AD Malz!
As you can tell this is my first guide. It is not up to the same quality of other guides, but I will do my best to make it. Please take the time to comment how I can improve and what went well in my guide!
