Sunfires are an excelent choice for Amumu, but this build is focusing on a more direct mage style of play. Sunfires are great, no arguement there, but they would be best after the items I had listed with possibly the exlusion of Abyssal Scepter. My item build provides the caster power that I need to pull off Amumu.
Despair. Amumu is such a pain to build with skill order because you really want all of his skills leveled up right away, but you unfortunately cannot. Level 10 is my usual start for Despair, sometimes as early as 8 if I can support it. I generally find that Amumu's entire combo of spells and holding up Despair is too draining on mana earlier than this. If you could rush to Chalice of Harmony faster, then earlier Despair would be great. Either way I usually increase Despair's effectiveness last. Bandage Toss / Tantrum are just too useful for ganking to pass up on earlier in my opinion.
This is just one of the ways to build him that I see used less often. Many do go with a higher tank build and make use of that staying power to last in fights with Despair. This build focuses on using the other three skills more effectively though. If you were looking for that build, I would recommend Sunfires after boots (which should be changed to either Boots of Swiftness or Mercury Treads. Heart of Gold is still great. Chalice of Harmony is still required for Despair. Rod is still a core item for being a tank/mage. Then stack the Sunfires. I would definitely move Despair's leveling up to 8 for this role also.
All in all, this is a different style of Amumu than the usual Amumu kiting with Sunfires and Despair. Whatever you choose, make sure it fits your team and the enemies weakness.
Why despair soooooooooooooo late?
