AP Shyvana works because of her high amount of scaling on both her E and her ult, which is based off of AP. This gives her a lot of burst potential and can deal some serious damage right at the start of the fight.
This guide is meant for top lane Shyvana, in which case you will most likely be put up against bruisers. This is where your Liandrys will first be used to melt down your opponents. It also provides you with a bit of magic penetration that will help you fight those tanky top laners. In teamfights, this allows you to do massive damage since you are the initiator, giving liandrys it's full potential since it's passive is based off current health.
Rylais is your first big health item, and this allows you to begin to get tanky. However, it's main purpose will be for teamfighting. When your initial knockback slows everyone, it will make it extremely difficult for them to counterengage and go back in on your carries. You will leave a streak of flame behind you that will slow anyone that runs at your team, allowing them to pick them off.
The Mercury Threads allow you to be more resistance to AP damage, and will reduce the potential threat of being CCed.
After that, the build gets a bit more fun with zhonyas. Everyone at this point is going to be frantic to peel you off their adc, and what better way to waste their abilities than to pop a zhonyas? This wastes all their cooldowns, and even provides shyvana with some additional armor to boot.
Abyssal scepter will help you and your AP carry deal more damage in teamfights since it reduces their resistance to AP, while giving you MR and even more damage.
Finally, guardian angel will provide you with some more tanky stats and allow you to resume in the fight if you get burned out.
Within your lane you can be a big threat to the enemy top lane by chunking their health with fireballs. Due to the AP scaling, you are going to be dealing a ton of damage to them with each fireball. Your fireballs don't have a resource cost, making it possible to just spam them all day.
Once you have your opponent low enough, dragon form in for the kill. Your increased resistances will help you tank the minions and your prey.
You will have no lifesteal, so it can be a good idea to buy plenty of pots.
You are the initiator, so pick a good time to go in and ult towards the adc, hitting as many people as possible. Before you ult, turn on your burnout so that it will leave a trail of flame behind you. This will allow your rylais to slow enemies as they rush in at your own team.
After ulting, go straight for the adc. Having a big dragon in their face makes it very hard to focus carries, and your damage can help burn them down. The enemy team will have to peel while your own team tears them up. You can even zhonyas if everyone turns onto you.
