Why support, not mid/top?
Actually, you can.
But i like support Heimer more :D
But if you watch to the skill set of heimerdinger, you can see that he can be good support with Rylai(to slow people approaching your ADC)
You are support and your responsibilities are protect you adc
Whatever in lane or in team-fight, Heimer can do well.
Pros and Cons

+ Best Champion for playing Adversity
+ Best helping for rush dragon and baron in short time
+ Moving (slowing) turret to help team pushing inner turret
+ (slowing) turret to help ADC/team to escape

|First item for every support. Support is responsible to ward river to protect dragon/ mid/ bot lane|
|Important item for support to get money. Also it have nesscessary 10% CD and AP and active slow to protect adc before you get Rylai|
|heimer no excape, so buy to run faster|
|It is prior than hourglass. Most of fight should be 5v5 after the 4th item finish. The slow will effectly protect adc and your team in 5v5. If it is put in 5th item, it is too late to help the team fight.|
|good item for increase damage, but the 6th item is seldom getting|
Passive - Due to low health of adc, the passive works well to adc and get health advantage.
Use of Q - you make 3 turrets triangle area on little behind your positioning. Due to the Q turrets protection, the enemy adc won't be aggressively chasing even the jungler comes. Don’t put too front for your turrets, it will hit cs and it can be destroyed by cs/enemy and lose the protection.
Remember to keep 3 Q turrets on land and your Q storage as much as possible.
Use of W - it is useful to poke enemies and gain 3 times +5 money by Spellthief's Edge if your W shot hits.
Use of E - Don't use this for poke. Only 2 situation you can use your E because it is the only skills(with long cool down) to protect ADC and really difficult to make stun hit. So, do it (1) Enemy chase to the centre of your Q turrets area. just E stun that guy. (2)your adc(e.g. Ashe) catch enemy and able to possible to make a kill.
Use of R - There is 3 upgraded skills to Q,W & E. They are used in situational cases respectively.
R-Q: Mostly used it when enemy jungler comes. When they chased deeply and nearly cross over your Q turrets area. If you also sure you and adc won’t die shortly. Just make the R-Q turret and continue to move back. If enemy retreat, you can try to counterattack back to them.
R-W: Mostly used it when the lane winning. do it when your adc catch enemy or the enemy is in low heath and you think that you can kill one of them.
R-E: Mostly used it when your adc will die without your stun.
