Masteries

Double-Edged Sword -> I take this because it gives Katarina a good damage bonus as she is melee.

Sorcery -> This is an alright mastery, it gives you cooldown reduction for your Q so you can farm better but is mainly taken as there is no other good choices.

Expose Weakness -> Allows your teammates to do more damage to enemies. I feel this mastery is great as you will constantly be using your abilities and will greatly help with getting resets.

Mental Force -> Gives you a good amount of ability power in the late game.

Arcane Mastery -> Gives you flat ability power which helps in the early game.

Executioner -> A good mastery for Katarina, allows you to do more damage to enemies below half HP.

Archmage -> Increases your ability power by a percentage, allowing Katarina to do more damage.

Dangerous Game -> An amazing point for Katarina as she is all about cleaning up and getting resets from her passive, allowing her to gain large amounts of HP from team fights and small skirmishes; can be a lifesaver in many situations, however the mana part is useless.

Devastating Strikes -> Works well on Katarina as her abilities scale with both AD and AP, meaning you will do a lot more damage even if enemies has resistances.

Havoc -> Good choice for any damage dealer, obviously.

Fleet of Foot -> Gives you more movement speed so you can roam faster and be more mobile in general.

Scout -> Very beneficial to Katarina as it allows her to Sight Ward and Shunpo further distances.

Summoner's Insight -> Reduces the cooldown of summoner spells, very good for Katarina to be able to engage from long range with Flash and Shunpo or just to escape when you are not able to Shunpo away.

Alchemist -> Helps Katarina through her rough early game, especially useful as you will be starting with 4-5 health potions in most matchups, allowing you to stay alive and in lane longer against tough match ups such as Syndra and Orianna

Vampirism -> Sort of a wasted point as I don't find any of the other options useful.

  • Greater Seal of Armor - Always take armour runes against an AD champion such as Talon or Yasuo as they will destroy you without them. They greatly help you transition from lane phase to mid game and keep you alive.

  • Greater Seal of Scaling Health - If you're not against an AD heavy team or lane opponent then you should take Scaling Health Seals as they give you 215 HP at level 18 for free, more than a Haunting Guise.

  • Greater Glyph of Magic Resist - If you are against an AP champion with high burst, such as Syndra, then you should take Magic Resist Glyphs in order to reduce the damage they do to you and keep you alive.

  • Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power - If you're not facing an AP champion with high burst then you should take Scaling Abilty Power Glyphs as they will give you an extra 27 AP at level 18.

Quintessences

  • Greater Quintessence of Ability Power - Flat AP Quints give you almost 15 AP at level 1 purely by themselves. This gives you most of your early game damage, allowing you to farm reasonably well.
