Greeting

Hello there and thanks for reading. I have built this guide as I have found it to be quite a good build for Aatrox and has worked so far. Please see below to justify my reasons up above.

Guide Top

Runes, Masteries and Summon Spells

Runes
We will start with Rune choice. Aatrox works well with lots and lots of damage and so pretty standard Rune set up with Armour Seals, Magic Resistance Glyphs and Attack Damage Marks and Quints. You can swap out the attack damage quints for Lifesteal as it really works well with Blood Thirst/Blood Price to help regenerate some health in between battles. I however love to have as much damage early on as possible to get early kills and assists to rush a BF Sword as early as can be.

Summon Spells
Summoner spells are pretty optional with what tends to work for you. I would generally avoid things like Clarity (for obvious reasons), Revive, Barrier, Clairvoyance and Garrison. These I find will generally be of no use to Aatrox or would simply be taking up a spot for something better. Depending on the team set up you will probably not need Heal or Teleport either. Ones that I would probably look to have are Flash (always usefull for chasing or escape), Ignite (again to get some early kills or to finish someone off), Exhaust (awesome for catching people who are quicker or dealing with an annoying champ like Jax) or Ghost (again for hunting people down or escaping). Cleanse is one that can be useful but I find that it is awesome at maybe two or three times in a game where as the other spells are much more viable.

Masteries
For masteries I have focused on getting Attack Damage and Attack Speed in the Offense column while focusing on getting Health and Armour/reduced damage from the Defense column. Aatrox is awesome when he starts to get a lot of attack damage and life steal and so focusing on giving him as much of a boost for direct combat as possible from his masteries is ideal. Depending on personal preference you can put more in to the Offense column but again this is what tends to work for me, particularly early game to help get gold to fund the very expensive build.

Using Abilities

For Aatrox to really work I max out his Blood Thirst/Blood Price first. The reason for this is that the additional health gained from Blood Thirst from every third attack help Aatrox stay in the lanes longer and heal up after battle or even during a fight. Blood Price is great for taking down champions. Next I will max out Blades of Torment, this is an awesome ability for chasing people down as it gives a slowing effect and begins to deal some pretty good damage around mid-game. Alternatively depending on playing style you can go with Dark Flight, really good for initiating or chasing people down or clearing lanes but my preference is to use it as an initiator and to max Blades of Torment first.

Using Abilities in Combat
As mentioned above I will generally toggle on Blood Price and rush in with Dark Flight in a one on one or two on one in my favor. If it is before level 6 it is particularly fun to use Dark Flight and Blades of Torment to work the enemy down and then using Blood Thirst to gain any lost health back against minions. After level 6 I will again initiate with Dark Flight once ready and will then strike the opponent with the Active of Bilgewater Cutless/Blade of the Ruined King and then cast Blades of Torment and then Ignite all the while keeping Blood Price on to gain the bonus damage from the third strike, if need be casting Massacre early on is better for the bonus Attack Speed and damage.

Team Battles
For team battles I try not to be the initiator with Aatrox as he can explode quite easily so I will generally wait or try to pick people off one by one utilizing Massacre on as many people as possible. In team battles I prefer to keep Blood Price on to do the extra damage but depending on who you come up against it can be beneficial to have Blood Thirst on particularly if you are on low health, remembering that Dark Flight can be used as a get away tool or to avoid skill shots.

Summary

All in all Aatrox is an awesome champ if used right, some of what is mentioned above may not suit everybody but it has worked for me so far and hopefully will be a good guide to get you started. Thanks for reading.
