Introduction

Hello Everyone, huge Cassiopeia player here. I've been playing LoL since February 2010 with near 900 Normal game wins, and a good amount of ranked gameplay as well. In Total that puts me at about 2000 games played, so I have a little bit of experience ;). If you'd like, look up my stats, add me to your friend's list, w/e you'd like. I'm not claiming to be high Elo or anything, my friends are too casual to play ranked that's all, so I generally don't very often.

I'm creating this guide for a few reasons:
1. The way I see the few other Cass players out there play bugs the heck out of me, especially when I'm doubling their CS when we're both solo.
2. The other guides I've seen on her just don't do her Justice.
3. I believe she has the best potential out of all AP casters in the game, it's just rarely reached.

I'm writing this guide assuming you are solo top/mid, if you're duo with Cass, you're crippling yourself, and your team.

Runes/Masteries

The Rune setup I take is pretty standard. MPen, Mp5, CDR. Some may wonder why I bring MS quints over AP/Mp5, and It's simple. Cassiopeia has great built-in kiting ability, the movespeed quints give you the little extra boost to kite that Warwick and Udyr to their deaths.

Masteries are also very standard. Never grab Expanded Mind , the mana boost is negligible, and Cassiopeia doesn't suffer from very many mana Issues. Also I believe Archangel's Staff to be a sin if your name isn't Ryze (or Blitzcrank if you're into that AP stuff on him, which I'm not.)

Items

I almost always start off with Doran's Ring, but there are a few cases in which boots and mana/hp potions will benefit you more. i.e. Annie, Brand, Kassadin.

After Doran's and Boots, always rush the catalyst. The many benefits of early laning with this item can not be ignored, and it transitions so well into a Rod of Ages. Rabadon's Deathcap is essential to any AP champion, so no need to explain that choice. Then there is Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Abyssal Mask, and Void Staff as my remaining items, and the order of these is completely dependant on the other team.

Other team has lots of Magic Damage? Abyssal Mask just may be the item for you.

Is the other team starting to stack MR? then Void Staff will be your best bet to keep your damage above par

Is your team doing very well and the above don't really apply? Then Rylai's Crystal Scepter will ensure you stay on top.

Why no Archangel's Staff you say? Let me explain why Archangel's is not a good item for Cass. Buying an Archangel's staff requires you to grab an early Tear of the Goddess, this combined with a catalyst, delays your damage output for way too long. Another reason why RoA > Archangel's, is that Cass isn't a very demanding champion mana wise, especially with her passive mana cost reduction. Also RoA gives health, as well as Mana, where Archangel's only gives a whole bunch of Mana that you'll never get close to using up. Not to mention Cata/RoA extends your laning potential every time you level up.

Skill Sequence

My Playstyle with Cass encourages me to level my skills this way. I max out my Miasma first for a few reasons:

1. It's a very reliable spell that has great damage, on top of a great slow.
2. It's exceptionally good at farming, I always place it on the caster minions, and then last hit the remaining 3 melee/cannon.
3. Also, you may say that the damage is less compared to maxing Noxious Blast or Twin Fang, but the DoT on it renews with every tick they are standing in it for. So when they run at you, you place your stun and pool, while playing Stepmania with q and e on top of their petrified bodies.
4. I also max my Twin Fang over my Noxious Blast, for the reason that it is one of cass' main sources of damage, and will be used a lot more outside of the laning phase. I just use Q as another way to stack poison and keep your movespeed bonus up. Also very easy to harrass with, but farming takes priority.

Gameplay

First thing is first. Open up your menu, go to key bindings, and bind smartcast skill 3 to your E key (If it isn't already.) You will thank me later, and this is a requirement to play Cass effectively. You will not have the time to press E and then click every .5s, it's just not practical.

The ideal situation is to lane top against their bulky DPS champ, while you have jungle tank/bulky dps. They wont be able to prevent your farm. So you just chill out farming the back lane of minions with your W skill, while using your Q and E to harrass when suitable. There is also one thing I MUST recommend you do. ALWAYS have your lane warded, I can not stress this enough. While playing and farming this aggressively, you're sure to get visited a few times. It's essential to see them coming and toss them a pool in the bush to scare them away. The less interruptions the better. Also, the bulky dps/ap carry will eventually get tired of your farm and come at you, this moment will be the easiest ult of your life. stun, spam, ignite, then bam free kill. Then in teamfights your goal is to AOE, and not get greedy. A greedy Cass is a dead Cass.

Summary

Cass is a great champ with a lot of potential, the best way to maximize your potential, is to get farmed early, and then share your dominance with the rest of their team. This style of play is decently aggressive in lane, so please please please make sure your bush is ALWAYS warded, no exceptions. Other than that, try it and tell me how it goes, or leave any constructive critisism you may have down below, and best of luck to you newer Cassiopeia players!
