AP Tank #2
Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Let's get it started!
WARNING: this is guide only about basics of Cho'gath. Item build, skill sequence or runes CAN be changed by yourself, also to keep this guide updating write comments and vote for this guide.
Welcome to my very first guide of Cho'gath! What I want is for is just have few minutes to read the guide and write a comment. Thank you! Also remember that english is not my native language so write comment if I done something wrong.
First what i want to say, this is the guide of playing Cho'gath and there is a possible way to build item sequence depending on enemy and your team. Later I'll explain what is special about him and how to play it.
Date goes like this: yyyy/mm/dd
2013/01/03-created a guide.
2013/01/04-fixed some mistakes.
2013/02/13-I'm back baby! Added new content, deleted Iceborn Gauntlet from build.
Since I am showing my two Cho'Gath builds it's better to see on these links since you can moderate and create your own build and see results.
AP Tank #2:
As you see build 1 have more armor and magic resistance but don't have damage like build 2
So take build 1 if your team lacks defensive stats while take build 2 for more damage if your team is tanky enough.
Pros / Cons
+Plenty of CC
+3 of 4 spells AoE <3
+Can jungle thanks to Carnivore and Vorpal Spikes
+6 stacked Feast looks like Gozzila
+Only champion with two Legendary skins available
+Great solotop 1v2
-Weak early game (1-6 levels)
-Big mana costs and long early game cooldowns.
-Can be hard to land Rupture
-Death = loosing half of stacks = less survival
Here we need our bonus cooldown reduction early game ability power and our only magic penetration.
Here goes our health, bonus armor, magic resist, regeneration. All masteries listed are needed to survive whole game.
If you want invest some points in utility take mana masteries because Cho is mana hungry early game you're going to have bad time if you don't manage your mana.
Skill Sequence and skill explanation
Take first but max second. Landing Rupture can be difficult for newbies so take it first for escape - chase tool. Remember it's your longest range spell and gives vision when spell is cast so if you want give some harass to enemies, farm up some minions or quick check bushes here's your tool.
(some say max Rupture first other say max Feral Scream. My opinion max Feral Scream)
Take third and max it first. This is your main harass tool but it's also biggest mana cost later levels. Have little less damage and scaling than Rupture but it's much easier to land.
Take second and max last. This one helps you farm minions MORE faster than normally. I love how sometimes you can take like 2 minions with one auto-attack. Also remember to turn off your Vorpal Spikes when you pushing the tower because sometimes when enemies come to defend your Vorpal Spikes can hit enemy and you'll pull tower aggro on you.
Here the real Cho comes to the house! Deals 1000 damage to minions and scales to 300/475/650 (0.7+ per AP), so you can secure a kill or Garen-tee bosses like Baron or Dragon. Also if you kill a minion, monster or champion you gain a stack (maximum stacks=6) that gives you health bonus and increases your size depending on how much stacks you have and what rank your Feast is. Late game if you have 6 stacks you'll have your +900 health steroid which why it makes Cho this special. Teemo says: Size doesn't mean everything well this time does.
Your size can make perfect shelter for AD Carries from opponents spells. Take note that when you die you lose half of your current stacks.
Greater Seal of Armor
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist
Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed
If you wanna survive against AD champs take these. Mostly I take it for taking less harass from AD champs in lane.
Building magic resist? Not a problem! Take these and penetrating resist will be easy like knife goes though butter.
Magic resist to wouldn't be a prob to you, but late game can be devastating, take these.
HOLY S*** TAKE THESE SO YOU CAN ESCAPE BETTER FROM GAAAAAAANNNNNKSSSSSSS.... *fades away leaving dust trail*
Flash Since Cho is not a gap closer you can use flash through the wall, increasing, decreasing gap between your chaser or free gold. If you are not summoner level enough, take Ghost instead
Exhaust Suddently Wild Jax appears and under your tower he's right about to kill you! *Uses exhaust, insta-flash away, evade stun, rupture, scream, feast and GG*. Do you understand?
Teleport Only take solotop against two players if you want quick shop and return back to lane.
Ghost Take only if you summoner's level is below 12
Ignite Having problems finishing off champions or you're going against dr.mundo?
What's special about this item it gives early game health. This item is not only for health - RoA passive Valor's reward gives you that needed sustain when leveling, so I recommend build catalyst the protector after first return.
Health, AP, slow. This one makes really difficult to run away without gap closing. Since Cho'Gath is master of chasing champs with no gap closing this item will make them certain death.
Gives you 90 armor, 20% more cooldown reduction, special attack speed reducing aura, 500 more mana. Nice package of defense you have here. One of good items for Cho'Gath since Season 2 and still viable in Season 3. Personally it's my favourite.
Magic resist, damage, magic resist reducing aura, what can be better? Still I recommend taking Negatron Cloak before building other stuff if enemy AP is fed.
Death in all sizes! Gives MASSIVE AP bonus and increases your damage significantly.
This item makes tankier not just you, but your team standing near you. This item is very useful in teamfights since it increases armor, magic resist and some health regen.
Tips & Tricks
*While running away, aim your Rupture towards where enemy will walk. If they get hit by Rupture, Flash away to create bigger distance.
* Cho'Gath have plenty of CC. There are many ways to use this to your advantage e.g. stopping enemy channeling spells like Katarina's Death Lotus.
*Interrupting tips: your spells can be used not just for interrupt channeling spells but disabling enemies who attack by surprise: aim to the center of Pantheon's Grand Skyfall with Rupture so after he finishes his ult he will be launched into the air by surprise.
*Sometimes using Feast in 1v1 can scare pants off the enemy and try to run away because of high damage output of ultimate.
