The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
The underestimated top
Lets face it, barely anyone plays Nunu top, surprising you even stumbled across this guide :/, however Nunu is a very strong AP tank top, in my opinion rivaling the AP top capabilities of Vladimir, Cho'Gath, Rumble and Mordekaiser.
Currently Nunu is almost only ever played support or jungle (mainly support) Though his 1 to 1 scaling on his snowball, and the awesome 2.5x scaling on his ult gives him amazing damage potential, his consume is also great for baiting summoner spells and ultimate abilities (like good old Karthus) Consume is a great way to bait a Karthus ult before Karthus actually builds a bunch of AP. Someone trolling a Karthus? Sounds good
Nunu has an amazing harassing tool (his snowball) which a good Nunu player is able to sustain throughout the laning phase with constant use of their passive, he has a massive amount of sustain with consume and his passive, so as long as someone playing Nunu has the mana he cannot be dislodged from lane (Free farm :D.) As well as Nunu's decent laning power, in the late game he becomes an absolute beast, not with his own damage, though it is respectable with some AP items, but through the use of blood-boil in the allied ADC. So by late game, a ADC that hasn't been fed has the damage potential similar to a fed ADC, plus the amazing move speed buff. Another good thing that AP Nunu brings to the table is his ult... Though generally difficult to pull off against a team with hard cc, a fully channeled Nunu ult on 5 people basically guarantees winning a team fight, though it is a big more difficult to pull off against in lane.
Max snowballs for that lane harass, then consume if team fights are occurring early, but usually just alternate between BB and consume. Take ultimate whenever it is available.
The runes I use are completely flexible, if you feel like you would perform better without he mana regeneration yellows and have them as armour and your blues be MR per level, that's completely fine with me, I personally prefer mana yellows for the lane staying power it brings, making Nunu able to spam consume and snowball like BAWS.
Again, same as runes, take my masteries as more a guideline then a must do thing, just because you look up guides doesn't mean you have to be mindless.
Liandrys is amazing on Nunu, he has a single target spell with an inbuilt slow( meaning 10% base magic dmg) per snowball, which you can spam, this generally Gives you a edge against other tank tops like Malphite and Cho'gath. You might wish to invest in an early Chalice of harmony if you're versing an AP top and running out of mana, if you're uncomfortable with your enemies kill potential on you. You need to build tanky on nunu, why? Because I said so... and consume is a lot more useful if they're having trouble shaving health off you in the first place, that and this "meta" thing told you so. Frozen Heart is another good item on nunu, why you may ask lets think about it, snowball reduces attack speed by 25%, Absolute zero reduces attack speed by 25%, frozen heart reduces attack speed by 20%. If the enemy ADC is effected by all of these, they will close to no damage, while your ADC is sitting with a +65% attack speed buff. Captain boots are fun too, when an ally with blood-boil is coming towards you for a hug, they get +25% move speed. But only get captain boots in the late game, or your lane will push and ganks will occur
Blood-boil the ADC, please just do it, unless you can help save someone with a blood-boil, only use it on the ADC, and if you're in a pre-made, make sure they only go in when the ADC is blood-boiled...
Farming is fairly annoying with Nunu, his abilities are too expensive to spend on farming early, so he only has his auto attacks, which won't do much as you should have no extra AD. However you can generally compensate for this by zoning the enemy out, snowballing and moving back a bit if they come in for a minion, with your early AP your enemy shouldn't last too long in lane against you, unless it's Yorick :3.
