Predict and dodge his q in lane. Fight him when his e is down. When he is in Mega Gnar form, predict his w. Bring TP (Very opinionated)
Malphite
Stacks armour, gets too tanky. Almost no chance to snowball after 1 or 2 armour items. Bring TP or Ignite
Tryndamere
Avoid fights while you're under level 3 or if he more than 50% rage. Try to utilize Riven's kit to prevent him from getting an auto into your health bar (Usually using 2 q's offensively, w to cancel Trynd's auto, e when an auto slips past, and 3rd q to back off). If Riven doesn't manage to get a kill on Trynd pre 6, then Trynd almost always wins match up. Bring TP or Ignite
Cho'Gath
AP or Tanky, either way Cho'Gath has tons of cc to prevent you from escaping or fighting. He has a true dmg ult scaling off AP and built in sustain. Bring TP or Ignite
Irelia
Built in sustain. Snowballs lane if she gets ahead. VERY OP stun. Try to keep your health bar the same or a little less then hers unless she is under 50% health (to prevent getting stunned, leading to more dmg output). Bring Ignite (MUST!!)
Rengar
Very high burst combo, though he is generally squishy and easy to kill within 1 combo (including your ult). Avoid fighting him when he is nearing 5 stacks. Bring TP or Ignite
Shen
Stacks armour. Hard to initiate on. Usually stays equal on trades due to his passive. Bring TP
Aatrox
Dodge q and e by predicting them. Normally builds AD/AttSp, thus leading to an easy snowball lane. Bring TP or Ignite
Pantheon
Either dominates or feeds. Continuous poke early game from q. Q CD is shorter than Riven's e CD. Passive can assist him in winning trades or tower diving. Although he can usually be killed with Riven's full combo including ult. Bring TP
Jax
A pretty hard lane for Riven to snowball off. He will continuously w-q on you then e away to ensure his safety during early laning phase early. Completely destroys Riven 1v1 if he manages to get ahead or stays even with Riven until late game. Bring TP or Ignite
Hecarim
Using level 2 wolves start will let Hecarim push lane a little towards you, letting you get a little more exp while staying out of his early q poke. Use Riven's combo to trade with him, then when he gets low enough, all in. Bring TP
Darius
Avoid extended duels since his autos will apply his passive which will last longer than Riven's shield. Pretty easy to snowball off if Riven gets 1 or 2 early kills (especially if he is building AD). Bring TP
Garen
Use Riven's e to counter his silence dmg. Keep on using q or w to prevent his passive from activating. Avoid duels if he has his ult passive on you. Bring TP or Ignite
Maokai
Try to rush tiamat in this match up. Having more CDR will reduce your combo damage and give him more stacks to his passive, which helps him sustain in lane. Usually best to let him engage in lane. Bring TP
Fizz
"AD Fizz ONLY". Usually runs TP and Ignite, rushes frozen heart and just ends up out trading Riven. Engage after he uses e. Not as strong at level 6 now, due to Patch 5.17. Bring TP
Jayce
Dodge his q-e combos. All in him as frequently as possible if he gets an early tear. Usually able to kill within 1 full combo. Bring TP or Ignite
Kennen
Dodge q in lane. If he chooses to get close with e, just fight him. Bring TP
Singed
Proxy.. Forever.
Will end up making your team have to chase him down, allowing other lanes to push. Gets very tanky and is insanely hard to solo kill past mid game. Bring TP
Ryze
Avoid fighting Ryze when he is nearing 5 stacks. Has a very high burst and cc combo when he reaches 5 stacks. Easy to kill within a full ult combo. Bring TP
Olaf
Dodge his axe, shield his e, avoid fighting him when he ults unless you have a clear lead. Usually able to be killed within a full combo early. Riven can snowball quite hard in this match up. Bring TP or Ignite
Wukong
Shield his e or q. Avoid fights if you get behind. His clone may be very tricky to play around. Easy snowball for Riven if she gets ahead. Bring TP
Nasus
Try to deny early farm with w or use your combo to chip him lower when he goes for stacks. Usually gets VERY tanky and has a heap of dmg as usual from stacks. Simple playstyle to comprehend, but annoying to play around. Bring TP
Trundle
Try to trade with him early. Try to all in him only when you have a clear lead. Bring TP
Gangplank
Shield his q's and e's. Try to watch the timer for his barrels and kill then as they are nearing the end of the second stack. His w can be used to cleanse your stun or reduce the damage from Riven's wind slash. Usually able to be killed within a full combo including ult. Bring TP
Renekton
His q can be used as sustain and does quite a bit of dmg. His stun prevents you from trading back with him most the time. His e normally used to assist him in trades or escape. Try to q-w (without autoing in between to deny his stun), auto once, then e away. Using this combo, most Rene's react with a stun while you e, preventing him from trading with you. Although this is risky since you are vulnerable to ganks for the next few seconds. Bring TP
Fiora
Q is very annoying. Passive lets her deal extra dmg. W can parry ANYTHING, usually resulting in a stun vs Riven. Although if she burns her w or misses it, Riven can all in freely, usually killing Fiora within 1 combo.
Sion
Q and e can be very easily sidestepped. Fight him while his q is down. Usually gets tanky, but is easy to snowball off early. Bring TP
Teemo
If Teemo uses q to poke, he is very vulnerable for the next few seconds. Usually I don't shield his blind so that I can use it to close the distance between Riven and Teemo. Can be a lane bully, but can be 1 shot within 1 combo usually including ult. Bring TP
Swain
Has a lot of D.O.T abilities. His ult heals him for a percentage of the damage he has dealt. Can usually be killed within 1 combo with ult (usually requiring ignite). Bring Ignite (MUST!!)
Poppy
Shield Poppy's q and trade with her with the rest of your combo. Avoid fights near walls. Her passive renders Riven's wind slash nearly useless. Destroys Riven late game. Bring TP
Yasuo
Skill match up. Avoid trying to trade with Yasuo under level 3 or when he has a spread out minion wave. Try to sidestep q's and stun him during his e's. Bring TP
Lissandra
Dodge her q's. Use e-q-w to get right up to Lissandra. She will normally react with her w, which is where Riven's stun comes in handy. While she has Riven snared, Riven is already right next to her with her stunned long enough until her w wears out. Riven can then continue to use her remaining q's to out trade Lissandra. Buying a QSS will render Lissandra's ult pretty much useless. Bring TP
Vladimir
Pokes a lot with q and e. W uses a portion of his remaining health but can be used to escape. Can usually be killed within a full combo including ult. Bring TP
Volibear
Main damage source scales off health, making Volibear quite hard to beat. He has his passive to save him. Try to only all in him with ult when his passive is down. Bring Ignite
Jarvan IV
Dodge e-q and q with Riven's e. If Jarvan wastes his e as poke or misses it, he can easily be all in'd. Bring TP
Lee Sin
Usually a skill match up. Avoid trades under level 3. Try to use Riven's combo and get out before Lee can use his passive. Bring TP
Riven is by far, the most fun champion in League of Legends for myself (and probably many others). Her playstyle is unique to herself and if her kit is utilized perfectly, it can result in many fancy plays. Riven can carry games solo very easily with experience.
This guide is mainly teaching the playstyles around other champions kits. Focusing mainly on top lane Riven.
P.S. This is my first guide I have created, please leave feedback to let me know where I could improve on in the discussion!
