Ezreal, The Flexible Explorer


Hello, my name is tinolas and here's my guide of Ezreal. With my playstyle Ezreal is very flexible. You will notice that all my builds have a hybrid touch beacuse I think as Ezreal you should be able to deal Damage with all your abilities. However Core-Ezreal is pretty cheap, so it's your choice to go AD or Hybrid.

Skills

Rising Spell Force

Hitting a target with any of Ezreal's abilities increases his attack speed by 15% for 6 seconds (Max Stacks: 5).

You'll get 40% Attackspeed for free. Don't under- or overestimate it though.

Mystic Shot

Ezreal fires a bolt of energy dealing 40/65/90/115/140 plus his attack damage as physical damage (applies on-hit effects).
Ezreal's cooldowns are reduced by 1 second if Mystic Shot hits a target.

Use it to harass your opponents, to lasthit minions, to reduce the cooldown of your other spells or to kill the opponents. Basically spam it, it is your key skill.

Essence Flux

Ezreal fires a wave of energy that damages all enemy champions it passes through for 75/125/175/225/275 (+.6 per ability power). Affected ally and enemy champions have their attack speed respectively hasted or slowed by 20/23/26/29/32% for 5 seconds.

Use it to increase or decrease the attack speed of nearby champions or to kill the opponents.

Arcane Shift

Ezreal teleports to a target nearby location and fires a homing arrow at the nearest enemy unit dealing 80/130/180/230/280 (+.75 per ability power) magic damage.

Use it to escape dangerous situations, to position yourself for your other skills or to guarantee kills. However don't waste it 'cause it has pretty long cooldown. Priotize the escape ability over offensive uses.

Trueshot Barrage

Ezreal channels for 1 second to fire a barrage of missiles dealing 350/500/650 (+.7 per ability power) magic damage to each unit it passes through. However, it deals 8% less damage for each unit it hits (Minimum 30%).

Use it to open up in teamfights with heavy damage, to help allies from distance or to kill runners. Priotize teamfights over solo actions.

We'll use a special hybrid mastery build. We'll get the Magic and Armor Penetration from the Offense tree and increased XP gain, Mana Regen, Utility Mastery and Movement Speed from the Utility tree.

Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration - Mana Regen per Lvl
Greater Glyph of Scaling Mana Regeneration - Mana Regen per Lvl
Greater Quintessence of Health - Health

Marks and Quintessences are personal preference. But you definitely have to get those Seals and Glyphs. You need the Mana Regen. You may say 3690 IP are too much, but you could also get Lvl 1 Runes for 270 IP to try them out. However their stats are only 50% worse than Lvl 3 ones.

Start off with buying Boots of Speed and 3 Health Potion. With Boots of Speed you should be able to avoid harassment.
At your first return to base, you should purchase at least The Brutalizer. It has everything you need: Attack Damage, Armor Penetration and Cooldownreduction.
Buy Pickaxe and build Boots of Speed into Sorcerer's Shoes next. This is important because you'll get Magic Penetration. You want to make sure that your magic damage skills actually deal some damage.
In the next step you finish Guinsoo's Rageblade. Guinsoo's Rageblade is the best hybrid item ingame in my opinion. You'll get Ability Power, Attack Damage and a Passive that synergizes well with Rising Spell Force, you gain 2 stacks if you hit with your Mystic Shot because of Rising Spell Force.
All following items are situational, so go ahead and check what the match looks like. Whether you go for an AD- or Hybrid-Ezreal, Ezreal is a viable champion.

Item Explanation


Core-Ezreal
The Brutalizer
This is a great item for Ezreal because it has everything Ezreal needs (Attack Damage, Armor Penetration and Cooldownreduction) and it's cheap, too.
Sorcerer's Shoes
This important item gives you Magic Penetration. You want to make sure that your magic damage skills actually deal magic damage.
Guinsoo's Rageblade
This is the best hybrid item ingame in my opinion. You'll get Ability Power, Attack Damage and a Passive that synergizes well with Rising Spell Force, you gain 2 stacks if you hit with your Mystic Shot because of Rising Spell Force.

AD-Ezreal
The Black Cleaver
This item will reduce upto 60 of the target's Armor (12 on hit). Good choice if you want to increase your Damage while not ignoring Armor.
The Bloodthirster
This item will give you a lot of Attack Damage and some nice Life Steal, too. Good choice if you're looking for pure Attack Damage.
Phage
You get a chance to slow your opponent.

Hybrid-Ezreal
Hextech Gunblade
Another great hybrid item, you'll get Ability Power, Attack Damage, Life Steal and Spell Vamp. The Life Steal and Spell Vamp will help you to survive. You also get some CC with its Active.
Void Staff
This item will penetrate 40% of the target's Magic Resist. Purchase it if you face a lot of Magic Resist otherwise it's kinda wasted because percentage based penetration works after flat based one.
Phage
You get a chance to slow your opponent.

Other possible choices:
Trinity Force
This item will make your Sheen hit a lot harder. You also get a snare chance on your Mystic Shot. Great item if you want to focus more on Physical Damage.
Last Whisper
This item will penetrate 40% of the target's Armor. Purchase it if you face a lot of Armor otherwise it's kinda wasted because percentage based penetration works after flat based one.
Lich Bane
This item will make your Sheen hit a lot harder. The stats on it are not bad either especially the Magic Resist and the Movement Speed. A great choice but not a must in my opinion.
Abyssal Scepter
This item will reduce the Magic Resist of nearby opponents by 20. You will get Ability Power and Magic Resist as well. Purchase it if you need either the Magic Resistance or the aura.
Zhonya's Ring
This item will increase your Ability Power by a lot and give you a life-saving active. However it's really expensive so it as a endgame choice.
Mercury's Treads
This item will give you some Magic Resist and help you to counter CC.
Banshee's Veil
This item will give you quite some Magic Resist (+ HP/Mana) and help you to counter CC.
Randuin's Omen
This item will give you HP, Health Regen and Armor. Use it if you have troubles with Physical Damage.
Thornmail Armor
This item will give you Armor and a Physical-Damage-Carry-countering passive. Useful for those endless games.
Guardian Angel
This item will give you Armor and Magic Resist. A good choice if you feel you need both Armor and Magic Resist.

Sight Wards


Start buying Sight Ward if you want to win your games. They're pretty damn cheap and help you turn the course of games. Start to ward dragon/baron by the 15/25 minute mark. I can't tell you how many games I have won "lost" games by ganking the other team doing baron, scoring an ace and getting the baron buff.




Gameplay


General Gameplay Tips

  1. Position yourself defensively
  2. Get the Lizard Buff whenever possible - the slow makes it easier to hit with your skills
  3. Stay with your team
  4. Get the Lizard Buff whenever possible - the slow makes it easier to hit with your skills
  5. Learn to adapt your entire playstyle - DO NOT stick to a single build
  6. Be aware of the map - let the minimap and sight wards help you
  7. Learn to hit with your Skillshots

Laning/Farming Phase


Your main goal should be to farm gold. You might get some kills but don't die for a kill. Remember you're squishy. You should adapt your skillorder if necessary, however you should max Mystic Shot first.

Use Mystic Shot to lasthit minions, to harrass or to kill opponents.
Use Essence Flux to secure a kill or to increase/decrease the attackspeed of allies/opponents.
Use Arcane Shift to escape dangerous situations, to position yourself for your other abilities or to guarantee kills
Use Trueshot Barrage to kill the opponents or to turn the course of fights.

In Teamfights


You are the carry. You have to stay alive and to kill the opponents to lead your team to victory. In order to do so you have to stay back and put out your damage from afar.

Use Mystic Shot to damage, to kill or to harass opponents before the teamfight breaks out.
Use Essence Flux to secure a kill or to increase/decrease the attackspeed of allies/opponents.
Use Arcane Shift to escape focus fire or to position yourself for your other abilities.
Use Trueshot Barrage to open up teamfights.
