Hi, my name is HeartÓfDarkness and i am a casual player on EUW. This is my very first guide, so feel free to comment, i would love to receive some feedback, to improve this guide. U can also give me a thumbs up if u like my work.
I started playing LoL in season 2. As i got a little bit better into the game, i heard about Nocturne, and instantly fell in love with his design and kit. It took me really long to scrape up the IP since i was only playing coop games (hahaha). Since then he is my all time favourite champion.
My guide is maybe not what u would expect from a GUIDE, it doesnt show the most efficient way of playing Nocturne. I just want to share my build with the LoL community.
Warning, this guide contains unexplaned so called fold expressions, if u are new to the game, u might take a while to figure them out. I also dont explain every item or ability, so again u will understand the content of this guide better, if u are an advanced player.
Thats a little bit about my person, let's get started!
Pros & Cons
- Decent Jungle Sustain
- Strong early-mid game
- Can stick to targets easily thanks to Duskbringer
- Can be played as Assassin or Bruiser
- Good Dragon Conrtol
- Very Strong Counter Jungling
- Strong post-6 ganks with Paranoia
- Spell Shield Shroud of Darkness
- Not the best jungle clear speed
- Falls off Late Game
- Can be difficult to recover from an early deficit
- If u mess up Shroud of Darkness u will fail
These let u take less Dmg from Jungle Creeps, as well from champion in possible early fights, u can take health/lvl seals instead for late game.
Even if i dont put much value on reaching 40% CDR asap, these are nice for the ulti cooldown late game.
These are cool, because they do not only reduce the Dmg from Mages, also dragon's Dmg.
I like running Atkspd Quints because of a faster early clear, and procing the passive more often, but u could swap them out for Atkdmg or Armor Penetration.
In this chapter, i will explain Nocturne's abilities and how to use them. I will also tell u about some neat tricks that i know.
This passive, giving u a little bit sustain when jungling early on, is not the best passive u can get, but its ok. It's pretty cool that it received an AP scaling, but that doesnt cause anything if u dont buy rageblade.
I really like this ability!! It helps u clear jungle camps faster, its awesome when ur chasing somone, u can even use it as some kind of escape mechanic. Furthermore, it has some serious Dmg and range on it, giving u the last chunk of dmg whenever somone seems to escape from u.
This is ur spellshield, it lasts for 1.5 seconds, if u can block a spell during this time, u will get ur atkspd doubled for the next 5 seconds. It can be either ur saving grace, or it can cost ur life. Learn the animation of some specific abilities, so u can react fast enough to block it. It also gives u some passive atkspd, wich is nice for jungling, so dont forget to put one point into it at lvl 2.
The well known ominous purple shackles...this is not a DoT, as u could thinkn in the first moment. It actually deals dmg twice, when u cast it on an enemy, and when the fear goes off. The Dmg on it is pretty weak and scales with ap since it is magic dmg.
Ur Ultimate is a real powerfull tool for ganking after lvl 6. It makes the whole map turn black for enemys, and denys them from sharing vision. The duration of 4 seconds is pretty long, so u can take ur time to wait for the right moment to engage. Just dont wait too long, because if u lose vision of ur target, u can no longer dash to it.
- Put one point into Paranoia whenever u can.
- Max Duskbringer first for the dmg and atkdmg steroid.
- I max Unspeakable Horror second, because it increases the fear duration and Dmg.
- Shroud of Darkness is maxed last, because it doesnt bring much effort.
This is the most important section of a guide(IMO), the item build section. Here i will explain when and why i build wich item. I have tested many builds on Nocturne, and found out that some items that seem to be good, totally failed my personal test (cinderhulk for example). I won't explain EVERY item, but if u want some more information, leave a comment.
This is the Standard Start for every jungler, since u need it to build the smite active. I think Refillable Potion is not the best start for Nocturne, but u need it for the Hunter's Potion so buying single Health Potions would be useless.
These are the new "pink wards". The difference is they dont reveal stealth units any more, and they instantly disable other wards nerby. Don't forget to buy one from time to time, for vision control.
This is good for early vision control, since u need to ward ur jungle early, for the case of an opposing counterjungler. Later on i switch it out.
The upgraded Sweeping Lens. It is important for mid game Dragon Fights, since u should deny ur enemy team vision arround dragon area.
I get this item every Game, it just provides so many stats that Nocturne likes, and the active is also nice for chasing. If u build this item first, or if u want to finish Skirmisher's Sabre first is up to u.
This item is so good for fighting mid-late game, since bruisers usually build tanky stuff at this time. I get this item second, even if it provides increased experience when jungling.
Warrior is a good choice, for burst and CDR focused builds. Combined with blue CDR-runes and The Black Cleaver u will reach CDR-cap as soon as possible. It works well in a bursty Assassin-like build, my personal preference is still Bloodrazor.
These are my first choice for boots. The CDR is good for Paranoia and they are really cheap, meaning u can get them early on and overtake enemys when ganking.
Pick up mercs if u have a hard time dealing with cc, or if the enemy team is very AP heavy.
Ninja Tabi are good if the enemy team has a lot of AD champions, besides building health is more efficient if u already have armor.
These are nice if u are able to pull off a lot of ganks. The disadvantage about this is, that these boots dont give u any kind of utility.
This one is in my opinion, one of the best Dmg Items Nocturne can get. The Atkspd is nice for proccing ur passive more often, beside the life steal u get anyway. The Active helps u catching up to fleeing opponents, or can get u out of sticky situations.
IE is very strong in combination with other crit chance stats ( Statikk Shiv, Greater Mark of Critical Chance). But even as Single item it can increase ur Dmg by a huge chunk.
Maw is pretty cool, because it provides Dmg AND Magic Resist. wich means u can build dmg even if u are falling behind. Notice that Maw of Malmortius and Sterak's Gage have the same passive (Lifeline), so it will only proc one of those effects once at a time.
Pick Mortal Reminder, if ur enemys have a lot of lifesteal, or sustain/heal. In general
Lord Dominik's is better if u are not building any tanky stuff, or just if the enemys have more Health than u.
I have tested this quiet a lot now, and i have to say it works suprisingly well in a bursty Assassin build. It is not really recommandable to get this one if u are reaching for an Off-Tank build.
I like getting Sterak's if i am the only form of hard engage on my team, or just if we dont have many melee champions and i am getting focused down.
Get this if u want more armor and/or Health, the movespeed+empowered attack effect is also nice, but i think the dmg is not really noticable. U could swap this out for Randuin's Omen if u have a hard time dealing with crit champions like Draven, Yasuo or almost every auto-attack based champion.
I like Banshee's better than Spirit Visage, because u get more MR, in very rare cases i go for Spirit, for example if i need to 1v1 a lot. U could also get Spirit Visage if u have many healings on ur team, so these are stronger on u.
I get this one, if i wanna deal more dmg, but also need armor, the passive burn doesnt stack with
Enchantment: Cinderhulk by the way (pretty obvious huh?).
This is more or less a troll item, but it could still work, if u dont need to build specific resistances. Or if u are building 1 dmg item and straight tank after it. The regen passive will only trigger at 3000 HP (Hp granted by this item count).
The fact that the red and blue buff no longer have(has?) 2 additional creeps, clearing them is a lot easier for Nocturne. He doesnt get as much healing from passive as before, but it is still ok. So my favourtie jungle route for this patch is as following:
Red Buff (Smite)
Blue Buff (Smite)
Krugs/Scuttler (Top Side)
Nocturne's strength lies in early-mid Game. His early ganks are really potent IMO, because a 1.25 seconds fear is hard to escape without flashing. As u will face ability-based mid lane champions most of the time, it is very important to time ur Shroud of Darkness right, for successfull ganks.
I will leave item build all up to you, as i mentioned before, this is just MY opinion, u dont have to play exactly how i do.
This it the time when Nocturne can really shine, if u didnt mess it up early. At this time u should have finished ur first item. Youmuu's Ghostblade is a really good item for mid game, because people tend to build tank items later into the game.
If u have finished one or two Damage items, u should be able to make some mid game picks with Paranoia. For an Off-Tank build it is now time for some tanky stuff. If ur enemy team has many AP champions, Banshee's Veil might be a good choice, if they have more AD Champions, i tend to prioritze Dead Man's Plate over Randuin's Omen.
Late game phase starts when the map is open for teamfights, and ur team starts to group, this is at about 27-30 minutes. Nocturne's overall strength falls off pretty hard late, but if u make the right decisions, u can still be victorious.
Number ONE Rule for Late Game fights:
Dont start a teamfight on ur own, u are not the tank. There are other champions to do those things, champions with more HP and CC.
When ur Tank initiated a teamfight, and maybe some important ultimates are blown, by the enemy team. Get ready to use Paranoia onto a high priority target, most of the time it is the ADC or the APC (Mid Lane mage). Once u bursted one of them down, go for the top laner or the jungler next, be careful, both of them can be pretty hard to kill.
If the teamifight went well, and u have 3-4 members on ur team alive, i would recommend sieging towers before killing Baron Nashor .
I dont mention split-pushing in this guide, because i personally dont like Nocturne as a split-pusher. There are other Champions that are better at tasks like this, e.g. Shaco, Zed or Talon.
Nocturne as a Champion is:
- Super Fun to Play
- Fairly Easy to learn
- A very effective Off-Tank/Assassin Jungler
