Introduction

Why Kassadin? Because he' got mad burst damage topped with meta breaking mobility. Kassadin can just give an enemy teams carry a one way ticket to the void and nobody except maybe Kayle can do anything about it.

I get a lot of complaints from my teammates at the start of every game as to why I don't have armor when facing "ad hard counters". ( Talon, Zed, Pantheon) or mr against "ap hard counters" ( Fizz and.....well, Fizz). I will just say this. Early game. Is. Not. Where Kassadin. Shines. All armor or Mr will do is allow you is reduce the damage you take in trades by a little bit.
You will lose the trade anyways. In early game, you should just be hugging your buddy the tower and be farming as much as you can with your Null Sphere and trading when your Force Pulse is up. Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power and Greater Seal of Scaling Ability Power will never let you down, and they will catch up to flat ap runes by lvl 6 which is where you need them anyways. At lvl 18 they grant 45 ap you would otherwise not have (+30% so roughly 14 ap from Rabadon's Deathcap and Archmage so you actually gain 60ish ap from them).

60 ap can make the difference between instantly killing the adc and running away when the damage source has been eliminated, and getting them down to 5% hp and then getting stunned with crowd control in your face. If you still want to have a 13% multiplier on your hp when facing an ap/ad opponent (depending on which set of runes you choose), go ahead, however I personally would rather decrease my damage taken by 70%...by taking out the enemy.

Another alternate mastery tree is 21/9/0, and while this is a fairly viable mastery tree, I prefer this one as mana regen is extremely important in allowing Kassadin to survive early game and allows you to last hit with Null Sphere much easier.
