Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
~GALIO - The right way~
A Guide By Vortex_Slayer
To be a proper tank does not require mass loads of health at your disposal (with the only exception to cho'gath) as high enough stats in magic resistance and armour replace this need as it reduces incoming damage from your enemies exponentially.
With this in mind, I have based this build for Galio, the Sentinels Sorrow around stacking defensive items. With Galio's passive that turns have of his total magic resistance into ability power, I have focused his primary items around this (what I believe), an overpowered ability.
When using Galio, treat him as a support tank, soaking up alot of damage while supporting others with your spells as they are reasonably powered by your accumulated ability power. I hope the following guide allows you to see Galio (and tanks for that matter) in a different light as its not always about health.
1.2 Summoner Spells
2.1 Galio at level 1
2.2 Galio at level 18
2.3 How to play Galio
For masteries, i follow a standard 0/9/21 build for Galio focusing on defensive upgrades and mana regeneration. Under the defensive mastery tree, I grab the 6 at bonus armour and magic resistance to improve performance at level 1 and also get improved health regen based on mana to be more durable in team fights.
In regards to Utility masteries, I get improved health and mana regen however 1 point in time reduction in death as this build causes Galio not to die as much as a normal tank would. I also get increased experience gain to get better results in the laning phase (as Galio is melee oriented, it is quite difficult to farm effectively early game). I also get 1 gold per 10 and the clarity mastery to support other players as well as increased mana regeneration, movement speed plus the final ultility on offer.
1.2 Summoner Spells
For summoner spells, I grab flash and clarity:
Flash: is seen as the most essential item for Galio as its primary use is to start team fights unexpectedly. For instance, this spell is used in combo with your ultimate (Idol of Durand). Remember, it is your job as tank to initiate fights and by flashing ahead into a pile of enemeis and using your ultimate not only taunts all your enemies for a few seconds and dealing damage to them, but also allows your team to catch up and finish the battle, hopefully, in your favour.
Clarity: is an optional ability and other summoner spells are just as viable. However, i use clarity in the instance that I get a null-magic mantle at level 1 to maximise magic resistance and also helps teammates throughout the game with the improved buff in the utility mastery tree. Other options in lieu of clarity are as follows -
Fortify: many tanks use this summoner spell to protect your lane while you are recalling or to assist other lanes when they need it. Overall, a good support item.
Exhaust: to catch up to enemies. However, remember that Galio's resolute smite slows enemies and ritcheous gust allows you to catch up to them.
At the beginning of the game I grab a null-magic mantle and 2 health potions to maximise my laning opportunity and heal myself if needed. Remembering that you have clarity at your disposal for low mana situations.
When you first return to base, try having atleast 840 gold so you can buy a chalice of harmony and basic boots in one hit. As chalice of harmony is your first full items that is upgraded from null-magic mantle, it is only temporary as your last item will replace this.
My first proper item is to upgrade your basic boots for Mercury's treads. This is because it give you not only magic resistance, but reduces the effect of incoming cc which is useful in team fights.
My next item is a banshee's veil as it gives you a large amount of mana and health not to mention the unique passive to negate one spell every 30 seconds (this could stop enemies from interrupting your ultimate).
Afterwards, grab a guardian angel as the increased magic resist and armour will help your role as tank and its passive provides a backup life if team fights get difficult.
Then, get a Force of nature as this will be your main source of magic resistance throughout the game. The bonus 86 magic resist will not only give you an additional 43 ability power but will also increase your health regen and your movement speed allowing you to catch up to enemies much easier.
Frozen heart is your only proper armour item however it is the best items choice for Galio. Thornmail, however, does not have the same effect as a frozen heart gives you a huge 25% cooldown reduction as well as a slow on-hit effect which is especially useful for nullifying the power of enemy dps during team fights.
Your final item in lieu of chalice of harmony is an abyssal sceptor. This is because it provides you with bonus ability power and magic resistance as well as reducing the effectiveness of other tanks and mages by reducing magic resist of enemies.
Alternative items in place of abyssal sceptor are as follows:
Spirit Visage: for increased health, health regen and magic resistance.
LEVEL 1 BASE STATS
Damage 56.3 (+3.375 / per level)
Health 410 (+85 / per level)
Mana 235 (+50 / per level)
Move Speed 310
Armor 13 (+4 / per level)
Spell Block 30 (+0 / per level)
Health Regen 1.49 (+0.15 / per level)
Mana Regen 0.9 (+0.1 / per level)
