Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Hey all! I'm a Platinum Top Lane main from Oceania who has been playing Gnar a decent amount. I've found that he is an incredibly fun to play champion, with a large amount of outplay potential, which is why I've decided to mainly play him.
I decayed a lot from taking a roughly two month break from League, but at my peak I was fighting vs Diamond 4-3 alongside other Platinum players (Although that doesn't mean much).
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
Greater Mark of Lethality
Greater Quintessence of Lethality

Gnar's base damage is insanely strong, often I've actually found that I can bypass buying my brutalizer, or just delay it for a long time, due to his great bases. For this reason, I've found that Arm Pen reds have been working well for me, but feel free to experiment.
Standard stuff. You can swap out Flat Mr for MR/per level but many top laners now-a-days have a decent amount of magic damage at their disposal *stares at Nidalee*.

After some testing, I've decided that Gnar's base damage is good enough that he can forgo the Flat AD Quints, and instead use Arm Pen.
Honestly, at the moment, you are almost forced to take + . Doing anything else drastically reduces your chance at winning lane, and ultimately winning the game. (ie. Splitpushing, TP ganks, etc.)
I really loved this combo, but the only way you can use it at the moment is if your enemy doesn't take teleport, which can never be guaranteed. It does give you extra kill pressure in lane, however its cons outweigh its pros.
The ability progression is pretty standard - the main reason I maxBoomerang Toss over is due to the fact that it helps with poking and kiting, and that maxing isn't necessarily as useful for laning - very rarely will you get three consecutive abilties/attacks off on an enemy without them backing off.
I take level two over due to needing a reliable escape both in terms of ganks, and when laning against enemies with dashes! If however, you feel as though you aren't fighting a particularly difficult to face top, and aren't at a chance of getting early ganked, then go ahead and level .
Whilst many people have been building Gnar damage oriented, I've found that I prefer to play him as a tank or tanky bruiser. Gnar is offered a decent amount of free damage - mainly via his E + W - which help to promote this tankier version of play.
I've noticed a lot of Gnar's straight up building damage items - Trinity Force, Infinity Edge, FROZEN MALLET, etc. I really advise against this. Gnar has incredible bases, and scales extremely well just building health. Furthermore, buying damage items delays Gnar's tankyness, which is pretty vital when it comes to team fights.
Additionally, Frozen Mallet is honestly a really, really, situational item. It has a pretty horrible build path, and is very expensive for what stats it offers. Its only redeeming quality is the passive it offers, but Gnar doesn't have any major problems with being kited/kiting, so even then it isn't worth it.
At this point, you will be wanting to fortify some of the defensive purchases you have made, and make sure to cover any weaknesses that are open.
In the late game, you will be wanting to round out your build. Whether this means to build slightly more damage, or make yourself a better front-line tank is up to you.

Tips and Tricks
Gnar Hop Locations
Teleport is one of the trickier summoners to use, just because it can really make or break a game. Don't feel scared to use it to get back to lane quickly after losing a trade and potentially being completely zoned from farm.
Teleport is also very useful for setting up ganks around dragon and bot lane. Having both ult and ~90 rage is pretty important when ganking, it will allow you to quickly engage on the enemy, and will lead to pretty successful ganks.
