With a good source of lifesteal (BT or WL) you can keep farming and not go back to base almost indefinitely and if you get trinity force and banshees veil it gives him a total of 84 attack damage which is more than any item except for BT and SotO...just a thought. That said, if you have a good support, Doran starter is fine, especially when laning with Sona/Janna.
