About me and this guide
Crystal Scar map to be deleted 22.2.2016. This guide will not be continued and applied to other maps. Thanks to all the people who used it to play customs with me. I hope you found it useful
I am Dunk after Duncan the Tall from the Song of ice and fire. I play league on both european servers. My most played game modes are hide and seek and aram. I don’t play much ranked but I have 3 accounts in platinum.
This guide is continuation to my previous set of rules I wrote on the old EUW league board. Click here to view the old thread.
The sole purpose of this guide (as its predecessors) is to become the most comprehensive and logically consistent set of rules available for hide and seek game mode played in League of Legends.
In contrast to majority of competing rules put together by others players this one will attempting to cover all the necessary details a player needs internalize in order to make the most out of the game mode while also explaining the logic behind each section of rules.
The general trend, as far as community-made rules are concerned, has been that many rules have been taken for granted even if intrinsically they aren’t at all in line with the main idea behind hide and seek.
It’s still a work in progress though.
- hide and seek is a custom game mode played in Crystal Scar
- draft pick is used in champion select more often than not
- In game there are 7 players in total: 5 hiders and 2 seekers
- capturing objectives other than the Storm shield in the middle of the map is forbidden for both teams
- 2 seekers have 40 minutes to take down the hiders who have 5 lives each
- in contrast, hiders aim to survive the 40 minutes
- game ends when either all the hiders run out of lives or 40 minutes is reached
- both seekers and hiders have their own sets of rules; detailed separately further below
Previously I had Kassadin, Master Yi, Rengar, Teemo and Kassadin listed as only prebans mainly (because those 5 had been considered preban-worthy since the game mode was conceived and people were therefore used to them(. In this ruleset, however, I will make separate prebans for hiders and seekers as seen below.
My reason for changing the prebans are the buffs and nerfs towards certain champions as well as (hopefully) increased diversity in picks afterwards.
I might also consider adding Twisted Fate as a seeker ban but then I’d be forced to include more stealth champions under the hider bans so TF remains open for now.
Prebanned for hiders:
Prebanned for seekers:
Note: Owner of the game decides the prebans always. You can’t force prebans on someone because this or that guide tells you they’re different.

Prebanned for hiders:
Teemo's passive makes him nearly impossible to locate before Oracle's Extract and similar items are allowed at the 15-minute mark. The harass from his mushrooms turns seekers game into a hell. |
Her passive. That's all. |
Prebanned for seekers:
Extremely difficult to outrun. Master Yi's ultimate allows him to ignore all the soft crowd control while providing him a movement speed boost. Add his Q, the true damage from his E and a Youmuu's Ghostblade and your team is lucky to survive the 20-minute mark. |
Banned from seekers due to his ultimate. The vision it gives added to his assassin kit nets Rengar a kill nearly every time it's off cool-down |
Her passive allows her to ambush hiders who are located outside the outer circle. Rylai's make also make her Q spam too overpowered. |
Note: Owner of the game decides the prebans always. You can’t force prebans on someone because this or that guide tells you they’re different.
As mentioned above under the general rules -section, Hide and seek is usually played in draft mode. Both hiders and seekers therefore have 3 bans each. I will try to cover a few of the better hiders and seekers here respectively.
There will be more than three so as a first pick you can decide which champions you despise the most as you're banning. You can also choose a decent pick for yourself from below.

- banned items for hiders: Frost Queen's Claim, Thornmail, Sunfire Aegis, Guardian Angel, Iceborn Gauntlet, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Frozen Mallet
- offensive items are also forbidden (majority of crowd control abilities scale of ability power)
- Items that provide defense, crowd control or movement speed are allowed with a couple of exceptions
- for instance, Lich Bane is banned due to being too offensive even if it provides movement speed
- same thing applies to Luden's Tempest and Wooglet's Witchcap (banned items) as its passive turns it into the Rabadon's Deathcap of Crystal Scar; acquiring the item for the active isn't justified
- buying consumables is allowed
- recommended items: Talisman of ascension, Dead Man's Plate, Youmuu's Ghostblade, Mercurial Scimitar, Boots of Swiftness, Randuin's Omen, Ardent Censer
- hiders have no restriction as to when or how many activated items they can buy (hiders can still only purchase items when they're dead)
Hider build examples:
Standard |
Nitro button | talisman of ascension |
Against double AD |
Against double AP |
- seekers are allowed to have 1 Oracle's Extract running concurrently after 10th minute
- after 25th minute a second oracle is permitted
- alternatively seekers can buy a trap detection item (only 1 oracle or vision item is allowed to be used concurrently)
- both seekers can have oracles on at the same time only after 25th or they get a 3-minute time reduction
- seekers team is allowed to buy 1 slowing item before 25th minute and a second after it in total
- examples of allowed slowing items: Frozen Mallet, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Iceborn Gauntlet, Blade of the Ruined King, Hextech Gunblade, Randuin's Omen
- Frost Queen's Claim is banned for everyone
- recommended items for an AP seeker: Lich Bane, Luden's Tempest, Void Staff, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Morellonomicon, Wooglet's Witchcap
- recommended items for an AD seeker: Trinity Force, Statikk Shiv, Last Whisper, Rapid Firecannon, Blade of the Ruined King, Youmuu's Ghostblade
Seeker build examples
AD DPS Seeker |
AD assassin |
AP caster |
- each hider has 5 lives
- allowed summoner spells are Heal, Ghost, Exhaust, Cleanse and Flash
- hiders can leave the base when the game starts at 1.20 but waiting until 2.00 in order to purchase more expensive boot enhancement is allowed
- in case a hider hasn't left the base before 2.30 he'll be reduced 1 life and if he/she stays there for longer other players can decide about additional life reductions
- once hider has left the fountain he cant recall or walk to base
- hiders may hide anywhere on the map except under their own fountains laser range
- knocking seekers into hiders fountain deliberately is forbidden and leads to 1 life reduction (e.g Alistar's Headbutt
- 1 helper per 1 seeker is allowed (e.g 1 hider helping other hider if theres only 1 seeker chasing); this enables 3 versus 2 situation if 2 seekers are chasing yet once the helpers have succeeded at helping the targeted hider they must part ways: group running is forbidden.
Example
Spoiler: Click to view
- no more than 2 hiders are allowed to stay in 1 hide simultaneously
- first offense of aforementioned rules concerning grouping leads to a warning for the first player to exceed to limit of allowed helpers/players in 1 hide.
- however, if the warned player(s) keeps breaking the rule they will get reduced 1 life towards each offense
- hider is allowed to buy items when hes dead and should leave the base immediately after spawning
- once a hider respawns, he has 30 seconds of immunity to hide starting from the moment he spawns (this is called grace time)
- hider is obliged to write the time his/her grace ends in All-chat or he has no grace time (e.g you spawn at 14.50; write ”/all grace 15.20”)
- if seekers damage or follow a hider during his/her grace the hider in entitled to recall and call his grace time anew
- grace time ends if a hider is active in any other way than actual hiding (for example: taking the buff in middle, using activated items, blocking seeker skill shots, using CC abilities)
- seekers cant deliberately follow hiders during grace time
- once seekers decide to recall hiders may never interrupt it
- once seekers health goes below 300 hiders must give seekers a chance to start the recall (generally 3 seconds to start it)
- however, if the seekers carry on seeking under 300 health hiders can keep using crowd control spells on them without repercussions unless the seeker starts his/her recall (recall can never be interrupted)
- abilities that contain immediate crowd control are allowed
- auto attacking is forbidden unless it inflicts immediate hard crowd control (stun, snare; Udyrs bear stance, Nautilus root)
- despite not providing hard crowd control some once per -type of auto-attacks that contain other type of crowd control are allowed (for instance, Garen's Decisive Strike is allowed for silence and Darius' Crippling Strike is allowed for slow)
- forms of crowd control: knock-up/back, entangle, blind, charm fear, flee, taunt, polymorph, root, silence, slow, stun, suppression
- note: combined crowd control is not allowed (e.g Yasuo's Steel Tempest, Brand's stun, Braum 's Concussive Blows, Kennen's Q, W or auto to proc passive)
- note: vision isnt a form of crowd control: spells that provide vision only are forbidden (for example: Ashe's Hawkshot, Quinn's Heightened Senses, Nidalee human form W)
- healing spells are allowed but not at the expense of seekers health (e.g Soraka's Astral Infusion is allowed but Warwick's Hungering Strike isnt)
- high DPS/low cooldown spells that contain soft crowd control/escape are not allowed (for example: Ashe's Frost Shot autoattack, Gangplank's passive slow, Cassiopeia's Noxious Blast, Sivir's passive, Katarina's Sinister Steel)
- this is to prevent hiders from harassing seekers too much which would be against the main idea behind Hide and Seek
- once a hider runs out of 5 lives he is to have 0 impact on the on-going game
- he has to stay in base and even if seekers come to ability range hiders arent allowed to influence them
- vision spells such Twisted Fate's Destiny are also forbidden once the named champion is out
moving outside the base to the outer ring is allowed only if seekers give hiders permission to do so - hiders who are out are never allowed to enter the fog of war (staying in the middle next to the storm shield is forbidden at all times)
- trying to get to seekers base (bug) for fun is allowed only with seekers permission
- seekers may start hunting down hiders (leave their base) at 2.00
- all summoners spells are allowed for seekers (only 1 Clairvoyance is permitted)
- working together to catch a single hider is recommended
- seekers can buy, recall or walk to base whenever they feel like
- once the seekers health goes below 300 he is obliged to start a recall
- if the seeker continues to seek below 300 health he risks dying to hiders crowd control
(if a seeker dies because he didnt recall under 300 hp its his own fault) - once the seeker starts recalling he cant cancel it himself (no fake-recalling)
- if seeker fake-recalls and proceeds to kill a hider thanks to it the kills doesnt count
- when hiders have their 30-second grace immunity seekers are not allowed to attack or follow them deliberately
- seekers are allowed to use all abilities

Frequently Asked |
Answers |
Q: Why can't I buy Frost Queen's Claim? Everyone else permits it! |
// Frost Queen's Claim is banned for everyone because using the active goes against the nature of Hide and Seek. The main objective for hiders is to hide and seekers to seek. The active ruins that and turns the game into tag. Late game there's usually only one or two hiders left. If the seekers buy the item hiders will be revealed (provided that the hiders who are out follow the rules and stay in base). As there is little to none counterplay against the active, Frost Queen's Claim is banned. Some would say Twisted Fate ultimate is just like the Frost Queen's Claim's active but that one you can at least remove by using Quicksilver Sash. |
Q: I notice you permit the purchase of Dead Man's Plate nowadays? I thought you banned it because it lets hiders get away with building a tank while still being fast? Keep your word you inconsistent dog. | // I personally dislike the item because of the reasons you mentioned. However, Zephyr was removed in patch 5.22 and therefore hiders can no longer stack zephyrs for the optimal hiding build. Therefore I had to permit either the purchase of items like Luden's Tempest and Lich Bane to fill the void Riot created by removing Zephyr or allow the purchase of Dead Man's Plate. In my opinion tanky hiders are more appropriate than one-shotting AP hiders. So in a nutshell I tried to choose the lesser evil. |
