About the author

Hello, and welcome to my Riven guide!

I made this Riven guide to learn Riven players how to get better! I play on EUW and I am currently ranked as Platinum I. If you have questions about Riven, feel free to add me in-game. My IGN is: Melentex. I've played Riven A LOT, and I might even learn you advanced Riven players a thing or two you might not have known before reading my guide.

Why would you start with teleport instead of ignite?

Teleport right now, is really op on Riven. One of the reasons to this, is because, if you have teleport, you can start wolves and get three extra potions and one ward. The four potions will make you have insane sustain. The ward will make you almost impossible to effectively gank. You will also be ahead in experience the whole game by doing this strategy.

Riven's Lore

In Noxus, any citizen may rise to power regardless of race, gender, or social standing - strength is all that matters. It was with committed faith in this ideal that Riven strove to greatness. She showed early potential as a soldier, forcing herself to master the weight of a long sword when she was barely its height. She was ruthless and efficient as a warrior, but her true strength lay in her conviction. She entered battles without any trace of doubt in her mind: no ethical pause, no fear of death. Riven became a leader amongst her peers, poster child of the Noxian spirit. So exceptional was her passion that the High Command recognized her with a black stone rune sword forged and enchanted with Noxian sorcery. The weapon was heavier than a kite shield and nearly as broad - perfectly suited to her tastes. Soon after, she was deployed to Ionia as part of the Noxian invasion.

What began as war quickly became extermination. Noxian soldiers followed the terrifying Zaunite war machines across fields of death. It wasn't the glorious combat for which Riven trained. She carried out the orders of her superiors, terminating the remnants of a beaten and fractured enemy with extreme prejudice. As the invasion continued, it became clear that the Ionian society would not be reformed, merely eliminated. During one bitter engagement, Riven's unit became surrounded by Ionian forces. They called for support as the enemy closed in around them. What they received instead was a barrage of biochemical terror launched by Singed. Riven watched as around her Ionian and Noxian alike fell victim to an unspeakably gruesome fate. She managed to escape the bombardment, though she could not erase the memory. Counted dead by Noxus, she saw an opportunity to start anew. She shattered her sword, severing ties with the past, and wandered in self-imposed exile - on a quest to seek atonement and a way to save the pure Noxian vision in which she believed.

''There is a place between war and murder in which our demons lurk.''

Cancelling with Riven

One of the most important things to do with Riven, is cancelling. After every single auto-attack you need to Q instantly, and continue doing that with every single Q. Try doing it as fast as you possibly can. Riven's E cancels the animation of all Riven's abilities. When you engage on someone, there are several combos you can make.
________________________________________________________________________________________

STANDARD COMBO:

E -> R -> W -> AA -> Q -> AA -> Q -> AA -> Q -> AA -> W -> AA -> E -> R
80% of all the champions in league of legends at level 6 will die by this combo if you execute it properly.

ONESHOT COMBO(CAN ONLY BE USED ON SQUISHY CHAMPIONS):

You Q two times, does not have to be on the opponent. Now you activate your ultimate - After your ultimate is activated you:
E -> R -> Q -> HYDRA -> W -> AA
The opposing team's ad carry and ap carry will die by this combo for sure, unless they're someone like Galio, Mordekaiser or Cho'Gath for some reason. By using this combo, there will be no time for the enemy to react before they're dead.

Riven's abilities

Has in my opinion the best kit in the game. You have a VERY LOW cooldown shield which absorbs massive amounts of damage. You have 4 gap closers. E + Qx3. This makes it almost impossible to escape from Riven, nor chase her down.

Riven's abilities charge her blade for 5 seconds, causing her to do 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 % of her attack damage as bonus physical damage on her next basic attack. Riven can store up to 3 charges, and can only expend one at a time.

RANGE: 260 COOLDOWN: 13
ACTIVE: Riven steps forward and lashes out in a series of powerful slashes, dealing physical damage to all enemies within 112.5-range. Broken Wings can be cast two additional times within 4 seconds, with the timer resetting after each.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 10 / 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 (+ 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60% AD)
TOTAL DAMAGE: 30 / 90 / 150 / 210 / 270 (+ 120 / 135 / 150 / 165 / 180% AD)
All three strikes deal the same damage, with the third damaging enemies within 150-range and airborne knocking them up. Riven will target the unit under your cursor; if no targets are present, Riven will simply strike the direction she is currently facing.

RANGE: 125 COOLDOWN: 11 / 10 / 9 / 8 / 7
ACTIVE: Riven's sword emits a burst of runic energy that shocks nearby enemies, dealing physical damage and Stun icon stunning them for 0.75 seconds.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 (+ 100% bonus AD)

RANGE: 325 COOLDOWN: 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6
ACTIVE: Riven dashes towards the cursor and gains a shield that absorbs incoming damage for 1.5 seconds.
SHIELD: 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 (+ 100% bonus AD)

COOLDOWN: 110 / 80 / 50
ACTIVE: For 15 seconds Riven's sword is reformed, gaining 20% of her total AD as bonus attack damage and 75 bonus attack range (200 total range). Broken Wings's 1st and 3rd area of effect radius increase to 162.5 and 200 respectively and Ki Burst.png Ki Burst's area of effect radius increases to 135.
For Blade of the Exile's duration, Riven can use Wind Slash once.

RANGE: 900
ACTIVE: Riven unleashes a 2200-speed wave of energy in a cone, dealing physical damage to all enemies hit.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 80 / 120 / 160 (+ 60% bonus AD)
The damage is increased by 2.67% for every 1% of an enemy's missing health, capping at 200% bonus damage (300% total damage) against enemies with 75% or more missing health.
MAXIMUM PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 240 / 360 / 480 (+ 180% bonus AD)

Masteries and Runes

For masteries, we just take the normal 21/9.
"But Melentex, why would I not just take 30/0?" Because the reduced auto-attack damage, and the health regen will be very useful early game, where you need to kill your opponent, early game is definitely the most important part, in the laning phase. Plus, the extra 9 points in offensive masteries, won't make a noticeable difference on your damage, however the 9 defensive masteries, will make a noticeable difference on your survivability, compared to, if you had 0 points spent there.

Here are the masteries we wanna use:

For runes, we use 15 flat damage, 7.50 flat cdr, 9 armor. We use these runes for the maximum early-game potential.

Here are the runes we wanna use:

The fast Q combo

This is a tricky, but very useful tip. In order to do this combo, you have to click away from the target while you auto-attack it, and then Q. This requires a lot of practice and good timing. Here's a good and detailed video, where "KyzerPvP" explains this from the bottom:
