This build centers around Kassadin's mana pool, and has two of his stats scale off of it. "Kassadins' Mana Build".
Thus the masteries in expanded mind and strength of spirit are crucial, creating a health regeneration so high you should be able to watch your health rise at endgame. Archaic knowledge is also a must for any caster, but the rest is up to you.
Magic penetration marks are also a must for a caster and I prefer health per level seals for survivability, but other than the magic penetration they are not that crucial. Pick runes that capatalize on your playing style.
Starting off with a Sapphire Crystal allows you to harrass more, and also increases your health regeneration, allowing you to lane longer. If you took teleport for a summoner skill, (which i recommend) recall when you have enough for Tear Of The Goddess. If you took a point in netherblade early on then spam it whenever it is up to capatalize on maxing out Tear Of The Goddess as well as charging up force pulse. Next get sorcerer's shoes and turn Tear Of The Goddess into Archangels Staff (hey now my huge mana pool scales ap). Decision point. Drawn out even team fights??? Get Glacial Shroud for the cooldown reduction and staying power. Being focused down??? Get Catalyst The Protector and turn it into Banshees Veil. Are you playing the role of a hunter/assasin??? Sheen/Lich Bane will greatly increase your damage output (Don't forget Nether Blade has an active now that you can use to activate Lich Bane). Obviously this also depends on the makeup of both your team and the enemy. Don't get Glacial Shroud if you're playing against a caster heavy team etc... !
Tip: Rushing Zonya's Ring early can be benificial as it is a huge ap boost and causes your mana to scale better into ap. LEARN TO USE THE ACTIVE. IT IS SO UNDERRATED.
The huge mana pool focused in this guide allows Kassadin to stack Riftwalks for building up damage as well as for a movement bonus, which i haven't seen on any other guides that i have looked at. I have found that in most high elo games Kassadin blows his meager damage and mana in one burst and sits around watching his team get slaughtered because he is too low on health and mana to reingage. RIFTWALKING IS WHAT MAKES KASSADIN WHO HE IS. TO USE IT YOU NEED MANA. THIS BUILD CAPATALIZES ON THE NEEDED MANA POOL TO CREATE A WELL ROUNDED CHARACTER USEFUL IN HIGH ELO TEAM FIGHTS.
I don't recommend trying to build both a Rod Of Ages and an Archangels Staff as both items scale with time, are expensive, and the timeframe of most games doesn't allow both items to reach there full potential. However, I'm not saying they are not viable, and if it suits you, go for both. They have great synergy.
End game you will have over 400 ap, over 2500 health, around 3500 mana, over 100 armor, around 100 magic resist, 25% cooldown reduction, over 400 movement speed.
