Introduction

Master Yi

Hello Mobafire community, my name is Granemore and this is my first guide on Mobafire and I hope you will give me your feedback and comments on how I can improve on this guide. My guide is not perfect but not imperfect. So use it to your liking as I spent a lot of time on this guide. This is the way i would play Master Yi as I find it AP dominant early game and AD dominant late game. If you could, please message me on how to improve my guide, I will read every suggestion. Let's start.

Story

Master Yi actually has some nice lore behind, have fun reading!

Keeper of the ancient art of Wuju, Master Yi is a mystical warrior from the isle of Ionia. He descended from one of the few tribes dedicated to the preservation of Wuju, a martial art founded with the principles of absolute spiritual awareness of one's self and one's enemy. When the armies of Noxus invaded Ionia, Master Yi joined in the Ionian defense to fight the craven enemy, bringing his village honor through his unparalleled mastery of the blade. The ensuing battles ravaged the land, but no conflict inflicted as much horror as the day the armies of Noxus closed in on Yi's village. Left undefended, the village became the unfortunate test subject of the latest invention by an up-and-coming chemist, now known as Singed. The remains of the village that Master Yi returned to were so horrific that it remains a festering scar on Ionian history. To this day, no Ionian will ever publicly speak of what occurred.

After the Noxian invasion was contained, Master Yi fell into a deep isolation. For years, he trained morning to night, speaking to no one and refusing offers of consolation by fellow Ionians. The only thing stopping him from madly charging into Noxus battle lines headfirst was his pledge to keep the Wuju style alive. Even though he seethed with impatience, his rage became a tool for sharpening his practice of Wuju, developing stronger and deadlier skills for his eventual vengeance. The only thing that roused him was news of the League's formation, and Noxus' subsequent enrollment in the League. Master Yi now brings his mastery of the blade to the League of Legends with unflinching purpose: to avenge his kinfolk and end the predations of the Noxus once and for all.

''The art of Wuju lives on in Master Yi, and is plunged through the hearts of his foes.'' -- Soraka, the Starchild

Pros/Cons

Pros:
-Early game AP domination
-Late game AD domination
-Great farming abilities
-Good harassment early game
-Great carry
-Great pusher
-Good lane control

Cons:
-Squishy
-Not a good ganker
-Not a team champion

Like many other champions, Master Yi has a good number of pros and cons, overall if you play him well, you should be able to dominate the other team.

Items

So there is many types of of items you could go for Master Yi. As I said, I play Master Yi going AP to AD.

Starting Item:

This item is good on Master Yi as it allows him to spam his skill early in the game where you harass and farm with Alpha Strike.

First trip back to base:
OR OR +
Get more Doran's Ring if you cannot afford a Hextech Revolver or a Hextech Gunblade. More Doran's Ring helps you spam your skill more often and get no more than three of them. Hextech Revolver or a Hextech Gunblade boosts your AP and that's the reason why we get Doran's Ring, it let's you spam your skill while having more AP. Along with Boots, it lets you chase enemy heroes.

Next:
+
Finish up your Berserker's Greaves and if you have the money get the Guinsoo's Rageblade. Guinsoo's Rageblade gives you AP and AD, this is a good addition to Master Yi's item build as the passive is great, it gives you more AS and AP when using skills and your Alpha Strike teleports you to your target making you more likely to kill the champion.

Next:

This item is great on Master Yi as it pierces armor and in addition to the runes, Greater Mark of DesolationGreater Mark of Desolation and Greater Quintessence of DesolationGreater Quintessence of Desolation, it is going to penetrate(that's what she said) enemy champions armor even further.

Next:

Standard item, gives you lifesteal and damage so you would not die in a 1v1 situation and fights.

Next:
OR
Alright so here is the deal, if your team is not doing so well, i suggest you get Guardian Angel so that you can tank that amount of damage. I find it a good item overall on most champions as it gives you armor and the likes. Another one if your team is doing well and you are overfarmed, get the Trinity Force, it gives you attack speed and damage and all that nice stuff.

Once you got all these items, what you want to do is finish the enemy off not play with them. I see many pub matches they play with the enemy and in the end what happens, they lose.

Hybrid Yi's Play

The way I play Master Yi is that he goes AP early in the game and goes AD later in the game. At the start, you will want to get a Doran's Ring for mana regen so you can spam your skills and harass. If you have enough money to get a Hextech Gunblade, get it or else get more Doran's Ring. I would not get more than three just for the simple fact that it would not be useful later in the game and you would waste your money. After that, finish up your Berserker's Greaves and get a Guinsoo's Rageblade. This is the point where you focus on your damage. After your Guinsoo's Rageblade, farm for Black Cleaver and your damage should be boosted by a significant amount. Then Bloodthirster should be good for taking down enemies with ease. By this point you should be pretty much solid if your enemies are not fed and get a Guardian Angel for tanking so the enemies pretty much cannot kill you and a win is guaranteed. If you think you can tank, you may try to go for a Trinity Force.

Jungling

I have NOT tried Master Yi's jungling yet but it could be quite powerful as farming on neutrals can prove to be deadly when running lanes after you have reached level six. However, Master Yi's early game is very squishy and you may need Cloth Armor to take in a little bit more damage or jungling would not prove that much useful. Then get some Health Potion and Mana Potion so that surviving in the jungle would be longer.

Runes

Greater Mark of DesolationGreater Mark of Desolation
Greater Seal of Resilience
Greater Glyph of Shielding
Greater Quintessence of DesolationGreater Quintessence of Desolation
These are the runes I would go for. I would get Greater Mark of DesolationGreater Mark of Desolation and Greater Quintessence of DesolationGreater Quintessence of Desolation for armor penetration so it is easier for me to slay enemy champions. Greater Seal of Resilience and Greater Glyph of Shielding for armor and more magic resistance as I am squishy. These are not the only runes you can get, you can choose runes to your likings.

Skills

Here, I explain all of Master Yi's skills and my opinion on them.

- (Passive)Master Yi strikes twice every 7th attack.
This is your passive which i find a very good harass combo together with Alpha Strike

- (Active)Master Yi leaps across the battlefield striking up to 4 enemies, dealing 100/150/200/250/300(+100% of ability power) magic damage to each enemy with a 20/30/40/50/60% chance to deal 400 bonus magic damage to minions.
This is your main harass and farming skill and the damage early game is actually quite powerful when playing a Hybrid Yi.

- (Active)Master Yi channels, restoring 28/56/84/112/140(+30% of ability power) health every second for 5 seconds. While channeling, Master Yi gains 100/150/200/250/300 armor and magic resistance.
This is your main in-lane skill where you can basically take damage and not worry because you can escape and heal back the HP lost.

- (Passive)Increases physical damage by 15/20/25/30/35. (Active)Master Yi can activate this ability to double its effectiveness for 10 seconds, but this removes the passive bonus until Wuju Style becomes available again.
This skill gives you extra AD which is better in the late game as this guide focusses on AP and then going on to AD.

- Increases Master Yi's movement speed by 40% and Attack Speed by 40/60/80%, and he becomes immune to all slowing effects for 6/9/12 seconds. Additionally, killing a champion refreshes all of Master Yi's cooldowns. (Assists reduce half of the base cooldown amount.)
This skill allows you to chase or flee and the good thing about this skill is that you are immune to slowing effects in combination with flash, you are most likely to get a kill or escape with ease.

Skill Sequence

You would want to get Alpha Strike at level 1 for harassing. Then Wuju Style for damage as you are focusing on AP early on. Then max out your Alpha Strike and Meditate. Obviously get Highlander when you can as it is very useful. The way to use Meditate is that since early game you get Doran's Ring, you can basically tank a little bit of damage and go back to a safe spot and use Meditate whenever it's available as you have mana regen. You can also spam your Alpha Strike to harass. You can use Alpha Strike on minions and it may sometimes land on enemy Champions and there's no risk of getting hit by them as you skill. Highlander is your escaping as well as your chasing skill too. Use Highlander when you are getting chased or when you are chasing enemy heroes. If Highlander is on cooldown, use Alpha Strike to get to the enemy Champions. Also I like using this trick. Since Master Yi's passive is a Double Strike on every 7th attack, i would get to my 7th hit and then use Alpha Strike on a enemy Champion and then auto-attack. Many people would not expect the damage output of this trick and it is very useful in the laning phase.

Summoner's Spells

Flash - This is an all-rounded spell. It allows you to escape or chase enemy champions. It is a moment deciding spell.
Exhaust - This helps you escape or chase down enemies with ease. Use it when you are fleeing from enemies or chase when you are ganking enemy heroes. Also it's not all that Master Yi needs, you can try other spells too.
