Items for Support

Starting Items:

Item Sequence

Stealth Ward
75

Total Biscuit of Rejuvenation
50

Health Potion
50

Faerie Charm
125

The Faerie Charm can be replaced with Health Potions if you are going into a poke heavy early lane and/or do not have mana problems.

Early Game Items:
Item Sequence

Boots of Speed
300

Consider Philosopher's Stone if you think the laning phase will last a very long time or if you want an early Shurelya's Reverie for initiating fights.

Consider Chalice of Harmony if you are against an AP heavy team or if you want to build an early Mikael's Crucible to protect your carry.

Consider Kindlegem if you need Health and/or Cooldown Reduction or if you want to build an early Locket of the Iron Solari.

Consider Emblem of Valor for Aegis of the Legion if your jungler is NOT building it (auras do not stack)

Lastly always consider Vision Wards to help your jungler gank and/or have dragon control.
Mid Game Items:
Item Sequence

Mercury's Treads
1100

Upgrade your Early Game items into the next tier.

Consider a Runic Bulwark against AP heavy teams.

Consider a Glacial Shroud into a later Frozen Heart against AD heavy teams.

Strongly consider Mikael's Crucible and Locket of the Iron Solari if the opposing team has a burst or dive heavy comp.

Mercury's Treads are your go-to boot options though Ionian Boots of Lucidity and Boots of Mobility can be considered if you need the Cooldown Reduction and Movement Speed, respectively.
Late Game:
Item Sequence

Talisman of Ascension
2400

Frozen Heart
2700

Locket of the Iron Solari
2200

Runic Bulwark
2950

Ruby Sightstone
1600

Shurelya's Reverie or Locket of the Iron Solari can be replaced with Mikael's Crucible as the need arises.

Enchantment: Homeguard is a good option if you are defending your base and only have a few towers left.

Enchantment: Captain is a good option if you are the initiator.

Enchantment: Alacrity is a good all-around option.

If starting with a Long Sword you should attempt to get a Vampiric Scepter as soon as possible.
Early Game:
Item Sequence

Vampiric Scepter
900

B. F. Sword
1300

Berserker's Greaves
1100

Doran's Blade has become a very situational item and with its new life-on-hit mechanic is almost always worse than a Vampiric Scepter
Mid Game:

OR
Item Sequence

The Infinity Edge gives more damage but The Bloodthirster has added sustain from the lifesteal. The Bloodthirster is generally a better item on low attack range champions or against very dive comps.

Furthermore, you should be building toward a Zeal.

The Zeal can be made into a Statikk Shiv (better for burst, aoe, and long-range poke champions) or Phantom Dancer (better sustained damage).
Late Game:
Item Sequence

Infinity Edge
3600

The Bloodthirster
3700

Blade of the Ruined King
3400

Phantom Dancer
2550

Guardian Angel
2400

These items as well as Enchantment: Furor (for easier kiting) will round out your late game build. Don't forget about Elixir of Fortitude and Elixir of Brilliance.

If you do not need the sustain from Blade of the Ruined King consider Mercurial Scimitar (if the opposing teams has long binds/stuns) or another Phantom Dancer/ Statikk Shiv for more damage.

If starting with a Long Sword you should build an early The Brutalizer.

A slightly more unorthodox build involves starting with a Crystalline Flask, Faerie Charm and Health Potions. This build is very helpful on AD casters with mana or early game problems as it gets an early Tear of the Goddess to build into a Manamune (which when turned into a Muramana becomes extremely powerful.
Early Game:
Item Sequence

Boots of Speed
300

Build towards The Black Cleaver. If you are facing a strong AP champion consider a Hexdrinker or building fast Mercury's Treads.

If going the Tear of the Goddess build finish your Tear and then build toward The Brutalizer.
Mid Game:
Item Sequence

Hexdrinker
1300

The Black Cleaver
3100

B. F. Sword
1300

During this time in the game your goal should be to roam/gank and to dive their AD carry in team fights. After the mid game you are generally no longer able to reliably assassinate targets (unless you are super-fed) so building slightly more defensive might be an option.
Late Game:
Item Sequence

The Black Cleaver
3100

The Bloodthirster
3700

Muramana
2100

Maw of Malmortius
3250

Guardian Angel
2400

This build is relatively strong against AP damage. Consider building a Randuin's Omen or Frozen Heart (if you benefit from the mana) instead of Maw of Malmortius if you are facing strong AD damage.

If you are speccing heavily into Utility masteries you will also have Total Biscuit of Rejuvenation. AP casters have many item options depending on team comp and playstyle.
Early Game:
Item Sequence

From this point on you have many options.

Tear of the Goddess has the ability to build into an excellent defensive item called Seraph's Embrace

Chalice of Harmony can be helpful against other strong AP casters and if you have mana problems. It builds into Athene's Unholy Grail.

Haunting Guise is another strong option as it has health and magic penetration as well as a decent upgrade in the form of Liandry's Torment.

Catalyst of Aeons for Rod of Ages is another good all-around option.

Mid Game:

Buy and upgrade your Early Game items situationally.

Further items to consider are Deathfire Grasp for strong burst casters, Rabadon's Deathcap for the large amount of AP, Abyssal Scepter for added defense against AP and more magic penetration, Zhonya's Hourglass helpful for diving and surviving, and finally Hextech Revolver/ Will of the Ancients for sustain.

Late Game:
Item Sequence

Abyssal Scepter
2750

Liandry's Torment
3200

Rabadon's Deathcap
3800

Void Staff
2650

Zhonya's Hourglass
2900

This build is just an example as many AP builds are very situational.
