To build this guy into a pretty reasonably defensive character we need to at first give him some speed. He needs to be able to get away and heal as quickly as he can without losing too much exp.
So concentrate on staying close to your team-mates and hover for exp.

Defend or Jungle

At this stage you want to have enough health to move around quickly and be able to pacify groups of minions quickly and gather up some gold saving for our next big health items.

Lead the way

A this stage you want to build your item list to contain as many high HP, Hp Regen and Mana Regen as possible. Using your ghost to get you out of difficult situations cane prove quite effective if poisoned or dealing with one to two enemies, if your quick enough.
If your low but steadily increasing in HP go deal with the jungle monsters for a while and get some more healthy items.
Lead your way at full Hp and let the enemies sap at your health until you can get away with enough to recover and support.
