The Ionians have developed some of the most breathtaking and deadly martial arts on all of Runeterra – just one manifestation of their pursuit of enlightenment. The most remarkable blade style to emerge, however, was the unusual byproduct of foreign intervention. Master Lito was a swordsman whose teachings were sought by ruling classes from nearly every city-state. His art was a highly-guarded secret, but it was said that swords would breathe in his grasp. He withered unexpectedly from a mysterious disease which baffled the brightest of Runeterran physicians. When he died, he left behind Zelos and Irelia, his son and daughter, and a truly unique weapon. Zelos became a Sergeant in the Ionian military and left to seek assistance from Demacia immediately prior to Noxus' invasion of Ionia. Irelia, charged with the protection of their home until Zelos returned, was alone when Noxian forces struck.
The Ionians fought admirably, but soon Ionian blood stained the land beneath the prints of foreign boots. At the Great Stand of the Placidium, Ionians prepared for surrender, but were inspired to maintain their resistance when the young Irelia hoisted her father’s enormous blade and pledged to hold until her brother returned. In the chaos of the ensuing fight, Irelia was cursed with dark Noxian necromancy. As her life ebbed, Soraka, the Starchild, made a final attempt to anchor Irelia’s fading soul. Unwilling to relinquish her home, Irelia rose at the brink of death, and her father’s sword lifted in the air alongside her. Irelia rushed back to the fore, unfazed by the blade's sudden animation. The weapon danced around her effortlessly, cutting down Noxians as they gaped in horror. The decimated invaders were forced to retreat from the Placidium. Irelia was appointed Ionia's Captain of the Guard, and when the defense of her homeland moved to the Fields of Justice, so did she.
Okay, now if you want any other spell than these well go ahead! I'm not stopping you, these are only the ones I prefer to use. To me, my summoner spell depend on my team and enemy team composition(including my team's spells).
Ignite : usaully my first choice since most of the time people have a way to heal themselves via support or lifesteal.
Exhaust : my favorite spell to use on the enemy. This one let's you do your damage without as many worries or it can even be used as a defensive spell by using it on the enemy and then if possible, bladesurge then run.
Flash : also a great spell to have. It let's you jump over walls, catch up to an enemy champion, go away from a champion, and you get the point though, you shouldn't need it if your support wards carefully because of Bladesurge.
Ghost : a nice spell to have, but not as great as the top three...
Heal : this could be useful, but then again, it's only a small amount compared to your total late game health.
Cleanse : Mercury treads and your passive will take care of the CC, not cleanse
Clairvoyance : NO.
This rune setup is a good way to start an off-tank. It gives you extra penetration with additional armor. Personally I like the MR per level since it's great for the late game and with mercury treads you have almost 50 additional MR at level 18 of course!
For the masteries, as you saw, I picked 21/9/0I may change this one day but for now I'll leave like that. I chose this type of tree because I feel that it has a great symbiosis with Irelia. As you can see I made sure to take all the damage increases in the offense tree and the extra armor and magic resistance in the defensive masteries.

The skill sequence with Irelia may vary, but it'll always have a main focus, which in my opinioon, the bes one is Equilibrium Strike, but most players tend to opt for Hiten Style. That is one of the awesome things about Irelia. Her abilities let her excel at 1v1 and turn the losing team fight in her favor, the small problem is, not everybody plays her that well.
Q -Bladesurge : This is what makes Irelia a good last hitter and what closes the gaps. Since this refreshes the cooldown after a killing blow, this can be used for 4 common purposes,
1 : for last hits.
2 : to close gaps.
3 : to increase mobility.
4 : helping you escape
Remember to use it for those purposes and more that I may add.
W - Hiten style : this is extremely useful while laning. First, it increases health regeneration, second, it deals TRUE damage, third, it he's a low and flat mana cost.
E - Equilibrium strike : this is a fun spell to use, when you're lower in health PERCENTAGE than your enemy, it'll stun them, but when your higher, it'll slow them. Now what i say is that you always, I repeat, ALWAYS use this before your ultimate. Why you ask? Well that's simple, because the only reason that you use your ult(which you're going to be reading soon) when an enemy is nearby is to heal up.
R - Trancendant blades : Ahh, Irelia's pride and joy, her ult. This is what really makes her turn the tables for her team. Not only does it have a low cooldown, but it also deals AoE damage while healing her for 20% of the damage dealt(25% on champions). This is what can be used as an all-purpose ability, this includes and I say has a priority on quickly clearing waves of creeps.
Well we're finally here, itemization, this is where im gonna show you multiple possibilities of how the last item on the build may change.
First, you'll have to know the core item build.
B) Trinity Force.
C) Warmog's armor
D) Atma's Impaler
E) Force of Nature
Now, the Items below are SITUATIONAL, meaning you only take them under certain conditions in which I will mention.
1 - Randuin's Omen : this is a popular choice amongst Irelia's many possible builds. The only thing it requires extra is to take a Heart of Gold after you take Philosopher's stone, and then finishing it in the late game.
2 - The Bloodthirster : I've only taken this option if my team's carry lacked in physical damage(rarely the case if you're in a ranked game) or if I felt like boosting my damage output and the heals I get on non-turret auto-attacks.
3 - Guardian Angel : this is usaully my secound option if I'm dying too much which is rarely the case. Anyways, it's always good to know someone's watching out for you, unless it's a pedophile(blitzcrank).
4 - Frozen Mallet : this is a good choice to stick up to your opponent, and with the build you'll have, Atma's impaler will give bonus attack damage because of the huge health gain.
5 - Madred's Bloodrazor : this is an item you get only on ONE condition, 3 out of 5 of the team you're against has 3k health and over.
