The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
The first guide is the way i play him it's the tanky damage way
The second is a possible way to play him if you have a good tank and if you want more damage
If you have a tank which is ok but not really good you can get Frozen Mallet earlier and then you have to decide to play the tanky way or the damage way >.<
How to start a fight
First you have to know what a kind of enemie you have .
Against a AP character you will start a fight witch your q spell so you will deal damage and you silence him with it than activate your spin.
When the silence is over activate your shield so you will take less damage.
Against a AD you have to decide what to do against someone with abilitys to escape and someone with abilitys with just damage abilitys.
Against the escaping AD's activate your spin and your shield when you see that they are low you will know now they will try to interrupt that with your silince also your q.
Against the just damaging AD's go in with your q spell so silence them and they just can auto attack you if they deal tons of damage turn your shield on and go spin spin spin !! :D
In every of this situations you have to know you can acitivate your ulti to pick up a kill so against Offtanks it's a nice ulti because you make percentage damage to their lost health.
Don't use your ulti at the beginning that ist the stupiest thing you can do with Garen.
If You have low HP and you try to escape turn your spin on because it removes all slow effects it's nice to get away somewhere very fast

I will just say after Atma's Impaler you can go on a Thornmail or Force of Natur if your enemy team deals more physical damage go Thornmail and if they have more magic damage go Force of Nature
I max my shield last .
But why ?
The most important fact of that ability is the passive of this so try to lasthit and your lane and you are normaly go to the solo top lane.
And the active fact is good but not that important like your spin or your q spell .
you max your spin first at the offtank or tank guide because you are the one inside the teamfight and it deals most damage to all or the most enemies and you are the tank in the team so you don't have to punsh someone down .
But in the other guide where garen is a damage dealer you max the q first because you have to focus one and then is aoe damage not so effective against one and your q deals extra damage :D.
I took that masteries beacause ......
It's easy why in the first guide your are a tank and other points in that masterie tree is useless for him ok you can go cooldown reduction because all abilitys of garen are just on cooldown but i think the other poinst are more usefull . I took some points into the damging tree because you are no full tank just a Offtank so you will deal and you have to deal some damage.
And in the second guide you are a damage dealer so you go and this masterie tree and that masteries because you are an AD and no AP :D. I took a few points into the tank tree because what is a AD damaging character which goes down after 2 hit's and when you are not range <.>
I got some normaly tank runes like amor and magic resist.
Why did i take crit chance runes and no damage runes.
Easy because when you go in with your spin and if you crit you crit everything o.O and everything goes low HP :D
And like i said you crit with your spin this is why i took damage runes in the damage guide (second one)you just focus and you want to deal tons of damage.
