Janna is, in my opinion, one of the better late game carries out there the amount of crowd control she offers compared to the many carries out there is absolutely ridiculous. In her kit, she has a knock up (howling wind), a massive slow (zephyr), and an ultimate that can turn around any teamfight if used in the correct manner.
A good support can change the entire tide of the game. Looking at the current meta, one can see that it having a support gives you the advantage of:
1. Gold advantage for your ranged ad - often times, getting that early bf sword on your ad carry can make or break an early gank or a teamfight. Also, if the other team does not have a support-type character, the shared cs will be seen in the small skirmishes that occur whether it be over a blue buff or a fight near dragon. \
2. Map awareness and safety from ganks - warding dragon, warding bottom bushes to stop that pesky Taric from stunning your carry, warding Amumu's blue buff, using clairvoyance to track the enemy jungle... the support's role is to also offer a silly amount of map awareness at all times. This, especially in solo queue, can help your team massively as it can help coordinate ganks on the enemy team's jungle, or can even save your lane from being forced into a 3v2 situation.
3. Auras - auras, in my opinion, are one of the most overlooked aspects to a teamfight. The utility that they give both passively and actively will turn a teamfight on its heels, or will even just save someone from meeting their end so that they can help defend.
