The movement speed bonus won't help during combat. 2. Mercury Treads means meager spell penetration along with low ability power during early game: low damage. 3. No mana items until late game really hurt Kassadin's potential to stay in combat. 4. Your alternative build is old school and outdated. I'm surprised you even posted it.
